Aquilion One Prism 640-slice CT
What is the Aquilion One Prism 640-slice CT scanner
The 640-slice CT scanner is the ultimate testament to the application of modern technology in medical sciences. It has emerged as the most powerful tool to diagnose cardiovascular disease, the cause of one in four deaths due to non-communicable diseases. The 640 Slice CT Scanner makes non-invasive precise assessment possible for many specialities such as Cardiology, Neurology, Oncology, Gastroenterology and Paediatrics.
Why is it done?
The 640-slice CT scanner is used for non-invasive assessment of various organ systems in the body:
Cardiac Applications
- Non-invasive diagnosis for detection of heart diseases
With the latest advances in medical technology, we are now in an era of non-invasive diagnosis and minimally invasive treatments for heart disease. The 640 Slice CT Scan is powered with advanced non-invasive cardiology techniques, to evaluate and diagnose cardiac disorders with utmost accuracy. This means in early cases of heart disease, patients can be started on preventive therapy and management, while in moderate / advanced cases where risk to a heart attack is higher, the patients can be immediately referred for an Angiogram, Stenting or even surgery as required.
- Diagnosing CAD in overweight patients
A first time ever and unique feature of the 640 Slice CT Scan is its large, wide bore that allows it to accommodate patients up to 315 kg of body weight, who may not fit into conventional scanners. This feature enables diagnostic scanning for early detection of CAD in this high-risk patient population, so that cost-saving preventive therapies can be started on time. The wider bore is also particularly helpful for those who have a phobia of machines.
- Diagnosing calcium build up
The Aquilion 640 Slice Scanner can be used to determine calcium build-up on the walls of the heart arteries. Patients can start preventive therapies if they have deposits in the arteries, which, if untreated, could lead to growing into full blockages and result in a heart attack.
- Non-invasive post cardiac operative monitoring
The technology is really handy for doctors to perform routine checks post cardiac surgery to assess accurately, the status of coronary stents and bypass grafts. Being a non-invasive procedure it is safe, painless, quick and causes least discomfort to the patient.
- Advanced Applications
The 640 Slice CT scanner represents the latest in medical technology with enhanced diagnostic power, unrivalled visualization of the heart and other organs, providing doctors with all the information needed to make a diagnosis with confidence in the shortest of time.
In essence, the 640 Slice CT Scanner’s capability is ‘imaging the entire heart in less than one-third of a second and quickly enough to take an image in between two heart beats! It is extremely easy to use and covers the whole heart in one rotation, which also makes it feasible for cardiac perfusion studies. The coronary CT and entire aortogram can be done together.
Other diagnostic applications of the 640 slice CT scan
The 640 Slice CT Scanner can scan allows enhanced diagnosis in Neurology, Oncology, Gastroenterology and Paediatrics in a safe, rapid and precise manner.
Due to higher accuracy, the scan identifies diseases like cancer at an early stage providing an opportunity for complete cure. Also, abdominal, neck, brain and lower extremity angiograms can be done rapidly with 4D DSA with more precision, contrast and less radiation.
One rotation is all it takes to capture an entire organ, a baby’s chest or a whole foot. One rotation takes less than one second, decreases radiation exposure and eliminates movement artefacts especially in children and aged patients who will not able to lie still for a longer time.
Trauma patients can be scanned in one examination, quickly and effectively as the scanner enables enhanced diagnosis of soft tissues and bones. Extremities can be scanned without the patient having to lie on the scanner, by sitting on a chair at the back of the gantry and placing the limb into the opening. For scanning patients who have metallic prostheses, the scan can contain artefacts from the prosthesis. The 640-slice CT scanner’s technology will smooth out artefacts from any metallic prosthesis, thus providing informative and accurate images for the radiologist to interpret.
What happens during the 640 Slice CT Scan?
During the scan, a dye will be injected into a vein in the arm followed by a CT scan The technology allows use of less contrast (dye) while delivering sharper and faster images. After a series of computations, the images of the heart, brain or the body part being scanned are obtained by the doctors and interpreted. A comprehensive report is then generated. The scan can be done on an out-patient basis.
How long will the scan take?
The 640 Slice CT Scanner can be used to scan organs that are within 16 cm size in one rotation. Employing cutting-edge technology to accelerate clinical decision-making and optimise patient care, the advanced 640-slice CT Scanner reduces the examination time for diagnosis of a stroke to less than 5 minutes, compared to 30 minutes by other methods. It has the ability to scan entire organs at a split second without moving the patient table.
What happens after the procedure?
As the scan will just take few minutes and can be done on out-patient basis, after which you can go home. Ensure you are accompanied by someone. You can also meet your doctor and discuss your experience or ask your doubts. Otherwise, a follow-up appointment will be fixed along with the reports whereby your doctor will explain the results and further treatment plans.
Apollo expertise in the procedure
The 640-slice CT scanner at Apollo Hospitals, the first in India and the most precise scanner in the world, also allows enhanced diagnosis in the fields of Neurology, Oncology, Gastroenterology and Pediatrics in a safe, rapid and precise manner. In short, it is not just about cutting-edge technology, but about using technology to optimise patient care through accelerated clinical decision-making for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

FAQs
Why is Aquilion One Prism 640-slice CT a superior technology?
The Aquilion One Prism 640-slice CT Scanner provides numerous benefits making it a superior technology:
Benefits to the Doctor
- Enhanced diagnostic power: increased precision with accuracy
- Increased speed: captures the image of the organs in a fraction of a second
- Fastest examination time: enables complete and quick diagnosis
- Superior image quality: Sharper, smoother images resulting in superior 3-dimensional images of organs
Benefits to the Patient
- Significantly lower radiation: enhanced safety
- Ultrafast scan time: higher comfort
- Non-invasive assessment: painless
- Wider bore, wider applicability: for larger patients, patients with pacemakers and metal heart valves, and for those who are claustrophobic.
Is the 640-slice CT Scanner safe?
The speed of the machine results in lower radiation exposure to patients. The technology allows use of less contrast (dye) while delivering sharper images. With less artefacts, the CT scan can be performed on children, aged patients and on patients with pacemaker, metal heart valves and orthopaedic metal implants.
