Ceramic Total Knee Replacement (Ceramic TKR)

What Is The Ceramic TKR?

The Ceramic TKR, or Ceramic Total Knee Replacement, is a type of knee implant surgery that uses biocompatible ceramic materials to replace the damaged knee joint. It is done to relieve pain, improve mobility, and restore function in people who have severe knee arthritis or injury.

Why Is It Done?

Ceramic TKR, or Ceramic Total Knee Replacement, is done to relieve pain, improve mobility, and restore function in people who have severe knee arthritis or injury. It is often recommended to patients who have not responded to other treatments. Ceramic knee implants have some advantages over other types of knee implants, such as metal or plastic, because they are more resistant to wear and tear, less likely to cause allergic reactions, and more smooth and quiet in movement.

What Happens During The Procedure?

You will be given general or regional anesthesia to numb the pain. Your Orthopedic Surgeon will make an incision in the front of the knee to expose the joint. The damaged cartilage and bone from the lower end of the femur (thighbone) and the upper end of the tibia (shinbone) will be removed. Your surgeon will then attach the ceramic femoral component to the end of the femur and the ceramic tibial component to the top of the tibia with cement or screws. A plastic spacer will be inserted between the two ceramic components to allow smooth movement and reduce friction. The incision site will be closed and covered with a bandage.

How Long Will The Procedure Take?

The Ceramic TKR will take about 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on the patient’s condition performed by our experienced Orthopedic Surgeon.

What Happens After The Procedure?

The recovery after the procedure may vary depending on the patient’s age, health, and activity level. You may have to stay in the hospital for a day or two to monitor the wound and prevent infection. You will be recommended to use a walker, crutches, or cane for the first 2 weeks. Physical therapy exercises will be advised to strengthen the muscles and improve the range of motion of the knee. You can perform these simple exercises at home. Your doctor may prescribe you a painkiller and anti-inflammatory medicines to ease the discomfort and swelling. Follow-up visits will be scheduled to monitor your improvement.

FAQs

How Ceramic TKR is better?

The following factors make the ceramic implant used in total knee replacement surgery superior:

  • Ceramic materials are more resistant to wear and tear, which can reduce the risk of implant loosening and increase the longevity of the implant.
  • Ceramic materials are less likely to cause allergic reactions, which can affect some people who are sensitive to metal or plastic components.
  • Ceramic materials are more smooth and quiet in movement, which can improve the comfort and function of the knee joint.

Besides incorporating ceramic material, the rotating platform total knee replacement (TKR), also known as a mobile-bearing knee replacement, represents a surgical approach designed to provide the patient with a more natural knee motion post-operatively.

Who is suitable candidate for Ceramic TKR?

  • Patient with desire for greater mobility and improved quality of life.
  • Requirement of total knee replacement in young and active patients.
  • Patients with metal allergy.
