Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad successfully performed Micra leadless pacemaker implantation on a cardiac patient. Micra leadless pacemaker is directly implanted into the patient’s heart unlike conventional pacemakers which is placed in the patient’s chest and the leads run into the heart. The Cardiology team of Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad comprising Dr. K.M.K. Reddy, Dr. Karunakar Rapolu & Dr. Sridhar Reddy did a remarkable job and saved the patient’s life.
A 55-year-old female was presented to Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad with a history of syncope. Previously, in another centre, the patient underwent complex PTCA with multiple stents and was on dual antiplatelet drug therapy for blood thinning. On evaluation, patient was found to be non-diabetic, non-hypertensive and non-hypothyroid. However, the patient was diagnosed with sick sinus syndrome based on ECG changes and 24-hours Holter monitoring findings along with clinical history.
Permanent pacemaker implantation was considered, but in view of risk of stopping blood thinning medicines for stents; implantation of Micra leadless pacemaker was considered as a suitable treatment option, being high-risk post PCI status.
Micra leadless pacemaker is the smaller, self-contained and less invasive as compared to conventional pacemaker.
