Apollo Chennai Achieves Breakthrough in Complex Coronary Care with Advanced CHIP & ELCA Laser Techniques
Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, has set a new standard in complex cardiac care by successfully treating two high-risk coronary cases. Leveraging the advanced CHIP (Complex High-Risk Indicated Procedure) technique and ELCA (Excimer Laser Coronary Angioplasty), the institution reaffirms its leadership in addressing complex coronary blockages with precision, innovation, and patient-centric expertise. The team reopened a completely occluded 12-year-old stent using laser angioplasty, restoring blood flow in a challenging, long-standing blockage. In the second case, a 15-year-old stent with severe restenosis and an ejection fraction of just 30 percent required a tailored, high-risk intervention. Supported by IABP (Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump) and ELCA laser therapy, the team successfully cleared the blockage and placed a new-generation stent. Both patients made excellent recoveries and were discharged within 48 hours. These procedures were led by Dr. Refai Showkathali, Senior Consultant and Interventional Cardiologist at Apollo Hospitals, Greams Road, Chennai, along with the skilled Cath Lab team. Apollo Hospitals also expressed appreciation for the expert insights contributed by Dr. Jaswindar Singh from Washington during the interventions. With each such breakthrough, Apollo Chennai continues to enhance outcomes for patients with complex coronary disease, setting new benchmarks in advanced interventional cardiology.

PLS Excimer Laser: Pioneering Safer Cardiac Solutions at Apollo Chennai
Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, has achieved a new landmark in the care and management of heart diseases with the introduction of the advanced PLS Excimer Laser System. The workshop, conducted by Dr. G Sengottuvelu, Interventional Cardiologist, Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, assisted by Dr. Jaswindar Singh from Washington University, USA, displayed the unique capabilities of the Excimer Laser in managing complex coronary blockages where conventional angioplasty generally fails. PLS Excimer Laser therapy applies brief, gentle bursts of ultraviolet light to vaporise plaque with minimal effect on surrounding tissue. It strengthens cardiac intervention by allowing treatment of cases in a far safer manner with greater accuracy. Examples of challenging cases include chronic total occlusions, heavily thrombotic lesions, stent failures, calcified and fibrotic vessels, occluded grafts, and even the extraction of pacemaker leads Patients benefit from improved outcomes, reduced vessel damage, and versatile care for complex cardiac scenarios. Advantages include increased safety, higher intervention accuracy within calcified or fibrotic lesions, and the expansion of treatment options in failed stents and blocked grafts. Under the expert leadership of Dr. Sengottuvelu, Apollo Hospitals continues to drive cardiac innovations forward, reinforcing its standing for world-class care and clinical excellence.

AI-Enabled Brain Scan Slashes Stroke Diagnosis to Minutes
Hospitals in Chennai are deploying AI-powered scan systems that detects possible stroke symptoms to radiologists within minutes, much before human review. A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted or reduced, depriving the brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients. AI-driven scans now generate a “severity score” that computes stroke intensity and helps doctors initiate quicker action with intravenous thrombolysis within 4½ hours or mechanical thrombectomy within 6½ hours for timely and appropriate treatment. According to Dr. Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy, CEO of Apollo Hospitals, Chennai region, the integration of AI has cut the time taken from scan to interpretation from about 30 minutes to just 7 minutes. Neuro-endovascular surgeon Dr. Srinivasan Paramasivan at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai shared that with stroke, each lost minute destroys 12 km of nerve fibres. Therefore, diagnostic speed is the key. Thanks to AI-powered technology, identification and management of stroke now happens in minutes. Dr. Satish Kumar, a Neurologist at Apollo Hospitals, added that the AI tool quickly assesses the severity of stroke and flags blocked arteries to help even general radiologists make quicker and more assured decisions, especially in places where specialists may not be immediately available. While AI is changing healthcare, clinicians who have adapted to it will eventually take precedence over those who have not, as it influences diagnostic capabilities and speed, said Dr. N. Sridhar, Consultant Intensivist at Kauvery Hospital. However, Dr. C. Amarnath, Head of Radiology at Government Stanley Hospital, said AI improves precision and turnaround, but added costs involved in need to be carefully weighed — especially in large urban centres with specialist staff. Overall, AI integration in stroke imaging constitutes a major leap in acute care — faster diagnosis, timely treatment, and better outcomes. This is set to expand the adoption of AI-powered software at peripheral and rural hospitals, translating into better equitable emergency care across India.

Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, Delhi unveils South Asia’s first ZAP-X, an advancement in brain tumor treatment...
Apollo Hospitals Group, India’s largest integrated healthcare provider today unveiled the ZAP-X Gyroscopic Radiosurgery Platform, a revolutionary advancement in brain tumor treatment, marking a significant milestone as the first in South Asia to introduce this ground-breaking technology. With ZAP-X, Apollo Hospitals continues its legacy of innovation and commitment to providing world-class healthcare solutions for patients in India and across the world. ZAP-X introduces a new era in brain tumor treatment, offering patients a non-invasive, pain-free alternative with sessions lasting just 30 minutes. This transformative technology redefines precision with minimal radiation exposure, enabling new standards in effectiveness and patient comfort. Unlike conventional methods, ZAP-X utilizes a self-shielded, gyroscopic linear accelerator design, to direct radiosurgical beams from thousands of potential angles, accurately focusing radiation on the intended tumor or target. This innovative method improves patient outcomes by enhancing the ability to avoid critical structures like the brain stem, eyes, and optic nerves, while also drastically minimizing exposure to healthy brain tissue to safeguard a patient’s cognitive function. ZAP-X’s proven clinical capabilities will enable neurologists and neurosurgeons in treating Primary & Metastatic Brain tumors, Arteriovenous Malformations (AVMs), Trigeminal Neuralgias, Movement Disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, Epilepsy and other intracranial lesions such as meningiomas, acoustic neuromas and pituitary adenomas, with better accuracy and fewer side effects to patients. Dr Prathap C. Reddy, Founder and Chairman, Apollo Hospitals Group said at the launch: “For more than four decades, Apollo Hospitals has been at the forefront of healthcare, continuously challenging limits to provide exceptional care. Upholding this tradition, we have unveiled ZAP-X, an innovative technology designed for the treatment of brain tumors. This new approach allows for non-invasive, pain-free sessions lasting 30 minutes, with minimal exposure to radiation. ZAP-X also comes with advanced safety protocols, including instant error detection and reduced radiation leakage, that ensure the patient’s well-being and quality of life post treatment. Furthermore, as an outpatient procedure it allows for greater convenience and accessibility for patients. We commit to ensure that this technology is made available for every citizen of our country and for people across geographies, as this will be a boon for how brain tumors are approached and treated. With the rising tide of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), ZAP-X will be a new addition in our fight against NCDs, of whom cancers, form a significant portion.” The ZAP-X technology comes with key advantages which include it being non-invasive, thereby not requiring a surgical intervention for certain brain tumors, is pain-free; and offers frameless, pinpoint accuracy and real-time image guidance for shorter treatment durations and enhanced patient safety. ZAP-X demonstrates high success, ensuring effective control and relief for various conditions with minimal side effects. It achieves over 95% control rate in 10 years with minimal facial or trigeminal side effects. ZAP-X shows an exceptional 99.4% control rate in 5 years for small, defined tumors.Prof. John R. Adler, Founder and CEO, Zap Surgical and Professor of Neurosurgery, Stanford School of Medicine said, “Stereotactic radiosurgery is among the most important medical advancements of the past century. Eligible patients no longer must experience debilitating surgical resections, or potentially lose cognitive capacity by undergoing whole-brain radiotherapy. Instead, with ZAP-X radiosurgery, patients can now be quickly treated in an outpatient setting and often return to normal activities the same day with no incisions, and no pain.” While traditional brain surgeries last 3-4 hours, ZAP-X completes treatment within a single session lasting no more than 30 minutes. ZAP-X allows for a day-care procedure, enabling patients to return home post-treatment, unlike traditional surgeries requiring 4-7 days or more of hospitalization, and without the necessity of anesthesia. The Apollo Institute of Neurosciences stands as a pioneering force in revolutionizing neurological care across India and the region.
