Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai demonstrates modern multidisciplinary non-operative management on a liver trauma case
A 17-year-old boy was admitted after a fall from the second floor with polytrauma – multiple lung contusions, a grade 4 liver puncture and a ruptured spleen with haemoperitonium.
He was admitted under Professor Darius F Mirza, is a consultant HPB and Multi-Organ Transplant Lead at Apollo Hospital Navi Mumbai. He is one of the most experienced Hepatic Pancreato Biliary and Transplant Surgeons in UK, having been involved with complex liver, pancreas, bile duct and transplant surgery since 1986.
The patient was managed conservatively in ICU, and diagnosis was made on day 5th of a hepatic artery pseudoaneurysm and this was managed with angio-embolization. The patient recovered well and was discharged on day 9. He even gave his exams at 4 weeks and was completely normal during the routine follow up.
The outcomes could have been very different had he undergone surgery or had the post traumatic false aneurysm not been detected early.
Professor Darius F Mirza was appointed consultant HPB and Transplant surgeon in 1996 and worked almost 25 years at the leading liver and HPB unit in Europe, a center that has performed almost 5000 liver transplants, 2500 liver resections and 1400 pancreatic resections. He has a strong academic record with over 270 published Medline / pub Med articles and over 25 book chapters.
He was appointed to an Honorary chair in Hepato-billary Surgery and Transplantation by the university of Birmingham.
