“It’s possible to overcome cancer”” – In observance of World Cancer Day and the UICC theme for the year 2011, Apollo Specialty Cancer Hospital, Chennai organized a Human Chain at the Marina Beach, on February 4, 2011. Cancer support organizations all over the world, including the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) participate in campaigns to raise awareness about cancer, a disease that causes millions of deaths every year, many of which could have been prevented.
The Human chain was inaugurated by the famous Tamil Film Star Mr.Karthi Sivakumar, who led the pledge to prevent cancer by increasing awareness on cancer, which was followed by all participants.
The key message from World Cancer Day 2011 is “”It’s possible to overcome cancer.””
The UICC theme for this year 2011 is “”Teaching Children and Teenagers to limit their sun exposure by being sunsmart.””
Around 1000 school, college students and adults participated in the event wearing a cap with a message to prevent cancer and spread awareness.
All the school children also got a small sachet of sunscreen lotion, to inculcate in them the idea of being sunsmart.
The message to go for an early cancer screening was also familiarized to the general public thereby not only increasing their sense of awareness but also showing them that “”CANCER IS CURABLE”
