Apollo Hospitals performed the first heart transplant surgery from its facility in Hyderabad on a 19-year old student, Veer Anjaneyulu, suffering with dilated cardiomyopathy. The case is related to end-stage heart failure leading to depression of heart muscle. The operation was performed on 11th November by Dr Vijay Dixit, Chief of Cardiothoracic surgery, Apollo Hospitals. Dilated cardiomyopathy was very common in India and can be treated through drugs.
However, in cases where it can’t be cured it leads to end-stage failure which would be dealt only through a heart transplant. In this particular case, the hospital was supported by Jeevandan Project of the Andhra Pradesh government, and the city’s traffic Police in successfully harvesting the donor heart and transporting it to the hospital.
