Apollo Children’s Hospitals, Chennai, completes 6,000 Pediatric Cardiac Surgeries, Contributing to Group’s 20,000+ Overall Success
Apollo Children’s Hospitals, Chennai, has reached a major milestone by performing over 6,000 pediatric cardiac surgeries and 10,000 interventional procedures, contributing to over 20,000 such surgeries across the Apollo network in India.
Established in 2009, the Department of Cardiac Sciences has become a leader in treating congenital and acquired heart diseases in children, a condition affecting nearly 300,000 children in India annually. Their approach combines advanced surgical techniques, minimally invasive procedures, and a team-based care model tailored to each young patient.
Led by Apollo Children’s Hospital’s Dr. Neville AG Solomon (Paediatric & Adult Congenital Cardiothoracic Surgeon) and Dr. CS Muthukumaran (Paediatric & Adult Structural Cardiologist), the team has successfully conducted complex surgeries, including valve repairs, aortic reconstructions, and single ventricle palliation. Some surgeries have been performed on newborns who are just 3 hours old, and the smallest weighing only 650 grams.
Dr. Solomon emphasized the importance of detailed planning and real-time decision-making, while Dr. Muthukumaran highlighted how minimally invasive interventions have reduced recovery times and improved outcomes through advanced imaging and catheter-based techniques.
The hospital has also completed over 3,000 neonatal cardiac surgeries, 40 ECMO procedures, pediatric heart transplants, and 1,500 international surgeries in Apollo branches and missions in Iraq and Nigeria.
Dr. Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy, CEO of Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, called the achievement a reflection of Apollo’s commitment to innovation and compassionate care.
With cutting-edge facilities, dedicated pediatric ICUs, and personalized treatment plans, Apollo Children’s Hospitals continue to transform lives — one young heartbeat at a time.
