Doctors at Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata saved the life of a 12-year-old boy who was diagnosed with a fibroelastoma, an extremely rare tumour on the mitral valve of his heart. The heart surgery was performed using a minimally invasive technique to remove the rare tumor.

The young boy was brought to the Emergency department of Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals due to the onset of an acute paralysis in left hand and leg. He was admitted under the care of Dr Arijit Chattopadhyay, Paediatric Neurologist. Patient underwent an urgent CT-Scan for the brain which revealed a stroke. On detailed evaluation, he was found to have a tumour on the mitral valve of the heart causing severe destruction and leakage of the valve. It was inferred that a piece of the tumour had migrated to the brain which caused stroke.

He was operated under the leadership of eminent Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Dr. Sushan Mukhopadhyay. A minimally invasive mitral valve replacement procedure was done with the two-inch incision in the right side of the chest. Minimally invasive cardiac surgery on a 12-year-old child weighing just 24kg was a surgical challenge. The surgery was done meticulously and uneventfully.

The patient made a stable post-operative recovery. The biopsy report of the tumour revealed fibroelastoma, a very rare tumour of the mitral valve. Patient went home with a smile and made a promise to join school.
