C. Eligibility

Heart transplant eligibility varies but typically includes end-stage heart failure patients who've exhausted treatments. Criteria involve good overall health, a life expectancy of under two years without a transplant, and commitment to post-transplant care. Generally, eligible patients are diagnosed with conditions like cardiomyopathy or coronary artery disease, and have a poor prognosis indicating high mortality risk without a transplant.

E. During the Procedure

During a heart transplant, which can last upto 4 to 8 hours or longer for more complex cases, the patient receives general anesthesia to induce deep sleep. Surgeons utilize a heart-lung bypass machine to maintain oxygen-rich blood circulation.

The procedure involves an incision in the chest, allowing access to the heart. Surgeons carefully replace the diseased heart with the donor heart, connecting its blood vessels. Often, the new heart begins beating on its own. Sometimes, a gentle shock may be necessary to ensure its proper function.
