Ultrafast & Abbreviated Breast MRI

Ultrafast and Abbreviated Breast MRI are newer, quicker forms of MRI scans used to detect breast cancer. They offer most of the benefits of a full MRI but take far less time, making them more accessible and comfortable, especially for women who are at higher risk or have dense breast tissue.

At Apollo Athenaa, we use these shorter MRI scans (3 sequences opposed to 5) to give women more clarity — particularly when mammograms or ultrasounds are unclear, or when extra screening is needed. The scans are fast, accurate, and radiation-free.

How it
works
At Athenaa, Ultrafast and Abbreviated Breast MRI offer a faster, more comfortable way to screen for breast cancer, without compromising accuracy.
  • Before the Test
  • During the Test
  • After the Test
before.jpg
  • No special preparation is needed unless instructed.
  • A contrast dye is usually given through a small IV to improve visibility of any abnormal areas.
  • A kidney function test may be required before the scan.
  • Scans are best scheduled 7–10 days after the start of menstruation, when breasts are less tender.
  • Patients should inform the care team if they are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have metal implants or medical devices.

  • The patient lies face-down on a specially designed table with dedicated coils.
  • Contrast dye is injected through the IV line.
  • In Ultrafast MRI, images are taken very quickly, within seconds of the injection.
  • In Abbreviated MRI, only essential images are captured, reducing scan time to just 3–7 minutes.
  • The entire visit typically takes under 20 minutes.
after.jpg
  • Normal activities can be resumed right away.
  • Drinking fluids is recommended to help clear the contrast from the body.
  • Results are usually available within 24 to 48 hours.

Recommended for women who have dense breast tissue, a strong family history or BRCA gene mutation, have had chest radiation in the past, or need follow-up scans after unclear results.

The wide-bore design offers a more open, less claustrophobic feel, accommodating patients of all sizes and ensuring a relaxed, stress-free experience.

Unlike traditional MRIs, our advanced system significantly reduces noise, minimizing the loud knocking sounds typical of scans.

The scan is done in a prone position with the breast hanging in a dedicated coil, allowing for faster imaging using ultrafast techniques.

Uses just 3 precise sequences (abbreviated protocol) without compromising accuracy, attesting to advanced imaging technology.

MRI uses magnetic fields instead of radiation, making it safe for repeated use.
