Tomosynthesis

Tomosynthesis (or 3D mammography) is an advanced breast imaging technique that captures multiple layered images of the breast from different angles. These are reconstructed into a three-dimensional view, allowing radiologists to see through overlapping tissue — greatly improving the detection of small or hidden abnormalities.

At Apollo Athenaa, tomosynthesis is offered as part of our commitment to early, accurate breast cancer detection. It is especially beneficial for women with dense breast tissue, where traditional 2D mammography may miss subtle lesions.

How it
works
At Apollo Athenaa, tomosynthesis represents the future of breast screening, combining precision with peace of mind.
  • Before the Test
  • During the Test
  • After the Test

  • No fasting or medication changes are needed.
  • Deodorants, powders, or creams near the chest or underarms should be avoided on the day of the exam.
  • Comfortable clothing is recommended, as the patient will be asked to undress from the waist up.
  • It is important to inform the clinical team if the patient is pregnant, breastfeeding, or has breast implants.

  • The procedure is performed by a trained female radiographer.
  • As with 2D mammography, the breast is gently compressed between two plates.
  • Instead of taking a single image, the tomosynthesis machine moves in an arc over the breast, capturing multiple low-dose images in seconds.
  • These images are then digitally reconstructed into thin, high-resolution slices, similar to flipping through pages of a book.
  • Usually, both 2D and 3D images are acquired in one sitting for a comprehensive evaluation.

  • Normal activities can be resumed immediately.
  • Some temporary tenderness may occur but is usually mild.
  • Results are reviewed by specialist breast radiologists and are typically shared within 24–48 hours.
  • If an abnormality is detected, additional imaging or a biopsy may be recommended.
