Contralateral Symmetrisation

Contralateral symmetrisation is a surgical procedure performed on the natural (unaffected) breast to match the reconstructed breast after mastectomy. It addresses differences in size, shape, volume, and position. This step can be particularly beneficial following autologous reconstruction, where the new breast may have a different texture and contour compared to the natural one.

At Apollo Athenaa Women’s Cancer Centre, contralateral symmetrisation is integrated into the broader reconstructive plan, supporting not only the physical aspects of cancer recovery but also overall body confidence and self-image.

How the Procedure is Performed

The surgical approach is tailored based on the patient’s anatomy and the characteristics of the reconstructed breast. Depending on the requirements, the surgeon may perform:

  • Breast Reduction – if the natural breast is larger, to reduce volume and achieve symmetry
  • Breast Lift (Mastopexy) – if the natural breast is lower in position, to elevate and reshape it
  • Breast Augmentation – if the natural breast is smaller, to increase volume and match the reconstructed side

The procedure is typically done under general anesthesia. In some cases, it may be performed in combination with revision surgery on the reconstructed breast for optimal alignment and aesthetic outcome.

Recovery

  • Hospital Stay: Most patients are discharged after 1-2 days of observation
  • Pain and Healing: Discomfort is generally mild to moderate and managed with pain-relief medications
  • Activity Resumption: Non-strenuous activities can usually be resumed within 1–2 weeks
  • Follow-up Care: Includes wound care, scar management, and visual assessments to monitor symmetry

Key Advantages

  • Improved Breast Symmetry: By aligning size, volume, and position, the procedure creates a more natural-looking, balanced chest contour that enhances overall appearance.
  • Greater Confidence and Body Image Satisfaction: A balanced breast appearance contributes significantly to emotional well-being and restored self-confidence, especially after the trauma of mastectomy.
  • Refined Final Result: As the finishing touch in breast reconstruction, contralateral symmetrisation allows surgeons to optimise overall symmetry and aesthetics.

Contralateral symmetrisation completes your reconstructive journey in the truest sense, helping you look and feel balanced again. At Apollo Athenaa, this procedure is viewed not as cosmetic, but as restorative. It’s a thoughtful, patient-centred step that supports not just how you appear, but how you carry yourself and reclaim your confidence.
