Histopathology

Histopathology is the gold standard for diagnosing cancer and guiding treatment. It involves the microscopic examination of tissue samples to determine whether cells are benign, pre-cancerous, or malignant [cancerous] . If malignant, this technique is used to determine what type and grade of cancer they represent.

At Apollo Athenaa Women’s Cancer Centre, histopathology is central to every woman’s diagnostic and treatment journey. Our pathology team specialises in women’s cancers, including breast, ovarian, cervical, and uterine malignancies. Every biopsy and surgical specimen is processed using advanced techniques, ensuring accurate, detailed, and timely reports that enable evidence-based decisions.

How It Works

  • After a biopsy or surgery, the tissue sample is sent to the pathology lab.
  • The specimen is fixed (preserved in chemicals) and stained with special dyes to see the cellular structure.
  • A histopathologist examines the slides under a microscope to evaluate cell structure, tissue architecture, and the presence of malignancy.
  • Additional immunohistochemistry (IHC) or molecular testing may be performed to assess hormone receptors, HER2 status, proliferation markers (like Ki-67), or genetic mutations — all of which impact treatment.
  • A detailed pathology report is generated and discussed in the multidisciplinary tumour board to guide the patient’s care plan.

Key Advantages

  • Our pathology team includes specialists who focus exclusively on women’s cancers, thus ensuring greater diagnostic accuracy.
  • Fast reporting time, with most reports ready within 3–5 working days.
  • Access to advanced staining and molecular diagnostics.
  • Integration with radiology, medical oncology and surgical teams for seamless care.

Benefits

  • Provides a definitive diagnosis, forming the foundation for any cancer treatment plan.
  • Determines tumour type, grade, and stage, crucial to understanding prognosis and guiding therapy.
  • Assesses hormone and receptor status for personalised therapy.
  • Identifies eligibility for targeted therapy or clinical trials.
