Ultrasound Elastography

Ultrasound Elastography is an advanced imaging technique that enhances conventional ultrasound by measuring the stiffness or elasticity of breast tissue. Since malignant tumors tend to be firmer than benign ones, elastography provides valuable additional information to help differentiate suspicious areas, reduce unnecessary biopsies, and improve diagnostic confidence.

At Apollo Athenaa, ultrasound elastography is used as part of a comprehensive breast evaluation, particularly in women with dense breasts, inconclusive mammograms, or palpable lumps not clearly seen on other imaging.

How it
works
At Apollo Athenaa, we use ultrasound elastography to make breast evaluations more precise, less invasive, and more reassuring.
  • Before the Test
  • During the Test
  • After the Test

  • No fasting or preparation is needed.
  • Comfortable clothing is recommended to allow easy access to the chest area.
  • Patients should inform the doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding (this test is safe in both cases).

  • The procedure is performed by a specialized breast radiologist using a high-resolution ultrasound machine with elastography capabilities.
  • A water-based gel is applied to the skin, and a handheld probe is moved gently over the breast.
  • Elastography measures tissue stiffness in real-time using either:
    • Strain Elastography: Assesses tissue displacement when slight pressure is applied or how much the tissue moves when displaced.
    • Shear Wave Elastography: Uses sound waves to measure how elastic the tissue is - in kilopascals (kPa).
  • Color-coded maps and quantitative data or numbers help distinguish soft (typically benign) from stiff (potentially malignant) lesions.
  • If needed, doppler imaging is also used to assess blood flow.

  • There is no recovery time; patients can resume activities immediately.
  • The scan is non-invasive and pain-free.
  • Results are typically available on the same day or within 24 hours.
  • Based on the findings, further evaluation (biopsy or follow-up imaging) may be recommended.

Real-time visualization of breast tissue structure and stiffness.

Non-invasive and radiation-free, suitable for all age groups.

Highly useful in dense breasts, where mammography may be less effective.

Performed alongside standard ultrasound for a more complete evaluation.

Available as a screening or diagnostic tool for lumps, cysts, or post-surgical follow-up.
