What is Fertility-Preserving Surgery

Fertility-preserving gynecological surgery offers hope and choice to young women diagnosed with early-stage cancers of the reproductive system. It is designed to treat cancer effectively without removing the uterus or ovaries, so that future childbearing remains a possibility.

At Apollo Athenaa, we recognize that a woman’s cancer journey is not only about survival, but also about protecting her dreams — including motherhood. Our specialized team is dedicated to helping women navigate this delicate balance between cancer care and fertility sparing. Fertility-preserving surgery is considered for selected women who have early-stage gynecological cancers (cervical, endometrial, ovarian) or have tumors with low to moderate risk of recurrence.

How the Procedure
is Performed
At Apollo Athenaa, every surgical step is carefully planned and performed by experienced surgeons with a focus on safety, precision, and recovery.

  1. Cervical Cancer
    • Radical trachelectomy: The cervix (neck of the uterus) is removed while preserving the uterus. This allows for future pregnancy, usually via assisted reproduction.
    • The pelvic lymph nodes are also assessed or removed for staging.
  2. Endometrial (Uterine) Cancer

In early-stage, low-grade cases, fertility may be preserved through:

    • Hormone therapy to shrink the tumor, followed by close monitoring.
    • Hysteroscopic removal (removal through a camera inserted into the uterus) of the abnormal tissue.
  3. Ovarian Cancer
    • If the cancer is low-grade, confined to one ovary, and not involving the uterus, then unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (removal of one ovary and fallopian tube) may be done, preserving the uterus and the other ovary.
    • Comprehensive staging is performed to ensure that the cancer has been addressed adequately.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are fertility-preserving surgeries?
01

Fertility-preserving surgeries are procedures that treat gynecological cancers while retaining the uterus and/or ovaries, allowing women the possibility of future pregnancy.

Who is eligible for fertility-preserving surgery?
02

These surgeries are suitable for carefully selected women with early-stage gynecological cancers, such as cervical, ovarian, or endometrial cancer, where the disease is limited and fertility preservation is safe.

Are fertility-preserving surgeries as effective as standard cancer surgery?
03

In appropriately selected cases, fertility-preserving procedures provide cancer control comparable to standard surgery, without compromising safety. Close follow-up is essential.

Will I be able to get pregnant after fertility-preserving surgery?
04

Many women are able to conceive naturally after surgery. Some may require fertility support, and pregnancies are usually monitored closely due to higher risk.

What follow-up is required after surgery?
05

Long-term follow-up with regular exams, scans, and tests is essential to monitor for recurrence and to support reproductive health.
