Breast Reduction
Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to create a smaller, lighter, and more proportionate breast. In the context of breast reconstruction, it is often performed on the contralateral (opposite, non-reconstructed) breast to achieve symmetry with the reconstructed side.
Beyond aesthetic balance, this procedure offers significant functional benefits. Women with large, heavy breasts may experience physical discomfort, including chronic back and neck pain, shoulder grooving from bra straps, posture problems, and difficulty with physical activity.
At Apollo Athenaa Women’s Cancer Centre, breast reduction is planned to restore balance, alleviate discomfort, and improve overall quality of life.
How the Procedure is Performed
Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The procedure typically includes:
- Removal of excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin to reduce breast volume
- Reshaping and lifting of the remaining tissue to create a more youthful and symmetrical contour
- Repositioning of the nipple–areola complex, if necessary, to match the new breast shape and height
Incisions are most commonly made around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease. Every effort is made to place incisions in discreet locations and minimise visible scarring.
Recovery
- Hospital Stay: Most patients are discharged within 24 hours
- Pain and Healing: Swelling, bruising, and soreness are expected during the first week. These are managed with prescribed medications
- Drains: Temporary drains may be placed to prevent fluid accumulation; they are usually removed within a few days
- Return to Activities: Light activities and desk work can often be resumed in 1–2 weeks, while full recovery and return to exercise may take 4–6 weeks
- Follow-Up Care: Includes wound monitoring, scar care, and gradual reintroduction of movement and activity
Key Advantages
- Relief from Physical Symptoms: Breast reduction alleviates pressure on the neck, back, and shoulders, helping improve posture, reduce skin irritation, and ease daily movement.
- Improved Symmetry: When performed on the contralateral breast in the setting of reconstruction, reduction helps achieve a more natural and balanced appearance.
- Enhanced Mobility and Activity Levels: Smaller, lighter breasts make it easier to engage in exercise, wear activewear, and participate in daily tasks without strain or self-consciousness.
- High Satisfaction with Lasting Results: Patients report significant improvements in quality of life, confidence, and body image.
- Well-Planned Scars: Incisions are designed to fade over time and are supported with scar management guidance throughout recovery.
Breast reduction is both a functional and aesthetic solution. At Apollo Athenaa, every reduction procedure is tailored to your anatomy, lifestyle, and goals. The result is a body that feels lighter, more balanced, and more like you — so you can move through life with greater comfort and confidence.
