Liposuction for Lymphedema

Lymphedema is a condition where fluid builds up in the body (usually in the arms or legs) causing swelling. It happens when the lymphatic system, which normally drains this fluid, gets damaged. This can occur after cancer surgery, radiation, or infection. If not treated, it can cause pain, heaviness, and difficulty moving the affected limb.

In early lymphedema, lymph fluid accumulation (pitting edema) is the primary concern. However, over time, due to chronic lymph fluid accumulation:

  • Fat tissue proliferation occurs
  • Inflammation leads to fibrosis
  • Lymphatic vessels may collapse or be permanently damaged

The result is non-pitting, irreversible swelling that becomes resistant to conservative therapy as the swelling is no longer just from trapped lymph fluid but mostly due to fat buildup in the affected area. This is called fat dominance, and liposuction can provide substantial relief by reducing limb volume, improving contour, and restoring mobility.

Clinical Signs of Fat-Dominant Lymphedema

  • Firm, non-pitting limb swelling
  • Minimal improvement with compression or elevation
  • Adipose or fat tissue overgrowth and deformity (in thighs, upper arms)
  • Thickened, hyperkeratotic skin
  • Heaviness and limb dysfunction
  • Increased risk of cellulitis and infections

Liposuction for Lymphedema

Liposuction for lymphedema is a specialised surgical procedure aimed at treating fat-dominant or advanced-stage lymphedema, where chronic lymphatic dysfunction has led to the accumulation of fibrotic and fatty tissue and not just fluid buildup. This typically occurs in late or untreated lymphedema.

At Apollo Athenaa Women’s Cancer Centre, our approach to lymphedema liposuction is precise, evidence-based, and patient-centric, combining surgical expertise with comprehensive postoperative care to ensure optimal outcomes.

How the Procedure is Performed

  • Preoperative Evaluation
Patients undergo a thorough assessment, including clinical staging and imaging, to confirm that the lymphedema is fat-dominant and suitable for surgical intervention.
  • Liposuction Surgery
Using tumescent fluid infiltration and mechanical suction, fat is removed through micro-incisions. The process is meticulously controlled to preserve lymphatic integrity while maximizing aesthetic and functional benefits.
  • Postoperative Care
    • Patients are fitted with custom compression garments immediately after surgery to support healing and prevent fluid re-accumulation.
    • A tailored exercise and physiotherapy program is introduced to stimulate lymphatic flow.
    • Most patients can resume light activities within 2–4 weeks, with continued improvement over the following months.

Key Advantages

  • Visible and Sustained Limb Contour Improvement: Offers substantial aesthetic and functional benefits by removing fatty tissue and reshaping the affected limb.
  • Restores Daily Function and Comfort: Improved mobility and reduced limb weight enhance quality of life and reduce dependency on ongoing conservative treatments.
  • Minimal Scarring and Downtime: Small incisions lead to minimal scarring, with quicker recovery compared to traditional open procedures.

At Apollo Athenaa, liposuction for lymphedema is integrated into a comprehensive management plan, which includes surgical precision, structured rehabilitation, and long-term support. Our goal is to not just reduce swelling, but to restore freedom, confidence, and comfort for every patient we treat.

Experience long-term relief and restored limb function with lymphedema liposuction at Apollo Athenaa, where advanced care meets compassionate healing.
