- Bone marrow aspiration and bone marrow biopsy - The doctor uses a needle to take a sample of marrow and blood from the hip bone. The sample is then evaluated under a microscope for signs of leukaemia. Then, the sample collected gets sent for further evaluation to the laboratory.
- Pathology – The sample of marrow and blood collected get evaluated further.
- Blood tests - Complete blood count (CBC), a peripheral blood smear, and Renal and Liver function tests.
- Chromosomal tests - Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH)/ Polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
- Cytogenetics and molecular tests - These are done to look for genetic/ chromosomal changes (BCR-ABL translocation) in the leukaemia cells.
