Introduction
Immunotherapy is a type of treatment that enhances the efficacy our own immune system to fight against cancer cells.
The function of the immune system is to identify foreign cells and kill them.
Procedures
Immune check point inhibitors (ICI) are given as injections/ infusions. The type of ICI depends on the type of cancer.
Indications
The FDA has approved the use of immunotherapy (immune check point inhibitors) based on specific genetic biomarkers irrespective of the type of cancer or organ of origin eg.MSI-High tumors.
Advantages
Immune check point inhibitors are tolerated better than chemotherapy and patients have a better quality of life.
The side effect profile with immune check point inhibitors is different from those seen with chemotherapy.
