Introduction

Ultrasound, also known as sonography or ultrasonography, is an imaging method that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of structures within the body.

Features

An ultrasound scan uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the inside of the body. As such the equipment doesn’t emits any radiations, it is suitable for use even during pregnancy.

Indications and procedures

Ultrasound is commonly used for diagnosis and for treatment (Ultrasound guided biopsies).

It can be used to examine internal organs such as the liver and kidneys, the pancreas, the thyroid gland, the testes and the ovaries, and others.

Advantages

Most types of ultrasound are non-invasive, and they involve no ionizing radiation exposure. The procedure is very safe.
