The brain is one of the most amazing organs in the human body. It controls our entire body, keeping us walking, talking, breathing and is the seat of our mind and personality. The brain is incredibly complex, comprising around 100 billion neurons. It is the most sophisticated biological computer in existence! The brain acts on the rest of the body both by generating patterns of muscle activity and by driving the secretion of chemicals called hormones. This centralized control allows rapid and coordinated responses to changes in the environment.

Spine and Back pain Care

We treat a full range of spine, back and neck conditions from back pain to spinal tumours. We specialize in minimally invasive procedures to spinal stenosis, disc herniation and other degenerative spine conditions. We offer microscopic and endoscopic spine procedures to treat various spinal disorders. We have an advanced treatment platform called ‘Spinal navigation system’ wherein surgeons can perform complex spinal procedures with an accuracy of a millimetre without any adverse effect on the spinal cord or nerve roots. We have the intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring system which ensures good outcomes for patient undergoing intramedullary tumor surgery and spinal cord detethering surgery.

Brain injury & Critical Care

Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injuries can be devastating to the family. The key to a successful outcome is the early starting of treatment for these patients in a tertiary care centre. Apollo Hospitals has one of the busiest brain injury centres offering state-of-the-art treatment. Apollo Hospitals has a level-1 trauma centre catering to a large population. A round-the-clock CT/MRI scan ensure complete diagnostic back up. A well monitored Neurosurgical ICU makes the recovery faster and complete. A comprehensive head injury rehabilitation programme ensures early return to normal life.

Critical Care

Critical care is the corner stone of success for any neurological practice. We are fortunate enough to have a dedicated neurosurgical ICU to cater to every serious disease of the brain and spine. There is round-the-clock care comprising of neurosurgeons, neuro critical care physicians and neuro-anaesthetists to help your loved ones recover faster and rejoin normal life.

Percutaneous Spine Surgery

This is an advanced spinal procedure wherein the spine is accessed via a 3 mm port, which is used to treat various spinal disorders like spine fracture and disc disorders. In old age osteoporotic spine fracture, artificial bone cement is deposited into the collapsed vertebral body utilizing a balloon. This technique is called ‘percutaneous balloon kyphoplasty’. In early disc bulges similar procedure is performed using ‘plasma current’ to evaporate the disc material. This is known as ‘Percutaneous Disc Nucleoplasty’ (PDN) procedure. These procedures are done under local anaesthesia as ‘day care’ procedures and the patient is sent home on the same day. Needless to say, these procedures are blood-less, scar- less, and pain less.

Micro – Neurosurgery

With operating microscopes in laminar guided air flow operating rooms, Apollo Hospitals offers the best in micro-neurosurgery. Almost all procedures in brain and spine are done under the magnification provided by the microscope. With the use of a microscope there is less damage to a normal brain or spinal cord surrounding the area of abnormality. Patients have a smooth recovery and lower incidence of surgery induced deficits. The hospital stay is reduced and thus the cost to the patient is lower.

Minimally invasive Spine Surgery

Complex Spinal Surgeries & Minimal Access Spine Surgery

With the increasing rates of high speed vehicular accidents, the incidence of spinal injuries are on the rise. And if the patients do not receive effective treatment at the earliest, they may be left with debilitation neurological defects (paralysis of hands and legs / inability to control urination and defecation). Complex spinal stabilization procedures are performed at Apollo Hospitals to achieve a high degree of spinal stability as rehabilitation often depends on it. Microsurgery (micro-discectomy, corpectomy [removal of vertebral body], laminectomy, laminoplasty) is used to treat Spondylosis, where the spine gets degenerated and causes pressure on the spinal cord and spinal nerves.

MISS (Minimal Invasive Spine Surgery)

MISS is an advanced procedure wherein the spinal system is accessed via a button-hole sized port. MISS uses specialized tubular retractors through which surgeons operate. This has multiple advantages over traditional spinal surgery. While it is minimally invasive, it is relatively painless, patient-friendly, bloodless and scar-less.

Skull Base Surgery

(Complex procedures at the base of the brain involving the bone and blood vessels)
Tumors of the skull base are often the most difficult to treat. Surgery is complex due to the critical location of the tumor in terms of proximity to vital blood vessels, nerves and requires a team of surgeons – Neurosurgeon, Head & Neck surgeon, Plastic surgeon and Vascular surgeon. With the latest in high-speed drills and saws, we are indeed well equipped for these procedures.

Patients eligible are immediately administrated TPA to lyse the thrombus and if required immediately taken up for Endovascular intervention with mechanical thrombectomy, using state of art Biplane DSA facility. Needed patient could undergo even carotid/vertebral stenting, which could reverse the blood flow and pathology in these vessels.

Apart from this, patient with acute SAH are being investigated and managed appropriately either by intervention neuro – radiologists (Interventionists) with clipping/coiling, wherever required neurosurgeons with rich experience in vascular surgery would operate on these cases.
