Apollo Robotic Knee Replacment Program

Knee replacement, also called knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to resurface a knee damaged by arthritis. Metal and plastic parts are used to cap the ends of the bones that form the knee joint, along with the kneecap. This surgery may be considered for someone who has severe arthritis or a severe knee damage. If patient quality of life is deteriorated due to pain or when other conservative measures failed.

Various types of arthritis may affect the knee joint. Osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease that affects mostly middle-aged and older adults, may cause the breakdown of joint cartilage and adjacent bone in the knees. Rheumatoid arthritis, which causes inflammation of the synovial membrane and results in excessive synovial fluid, can lead to pain and stiffness. Traumatic arthritis, arthritis due to injury, may cause damage to the cartilage of the knee

Types of Knee Replacement

TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT WITH THE ROBOTIC HANDHELD SURGICAL SYSTEM

The CORI Surgical System is a tool the surgeon uses to correctly size and position the total knee implant with computer and robotic assistance. Computer assistance is used to collect the unique shape and motion of your knee to virtually plan the procedure. Robotic assistance is used to accurately perform the procedure. The extra layer of planning and precision provided by the ROBOTIC system aims to ensure that the procedure is performed exactly as your surgeon intends. The ROBOT does not perform the procedure; rather it assists the surgeon by providing accuracy and precision, crucial to the success of the surgery.

THE CONVENTIONAL TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT

Total knee replacement is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in all of medicine. More than 90% of people who undergo total knee replacement experience dramatic relief in knee pain and are better able to perform common activities. Total knee replacement removes and replaces the damaged knee surface with an implant. A total knee implant is made up three parts: a metal femoral component (thighbone), a metal tibial component (shinbone), and a plastic spacer that is placed in between. A forth component made of plastic is sometimes used to cover the back of the patella (knee cap).

PARTIAL KNEE REPLACEMENT WITH ROBOTIC ASSISTANCE

The ROBOTIC Surgical System provides robotic assistance through an advanced computer program that relays precise information about your knee to a robotics-assisted hand piece used by the surgeon during the procedure. By collecting patient-specific information, the surgeon is able to establish spacial boundaries for the robotics-assisted hand piece to assist in removing the damaged surfaces of your knee, balance your joint, and position the implant with accuracy and precision.

PARTIAL KNEE REPLACEMENT WITH ROBOTIC ASSISTANCE

Using traditional surgical methods, cutting blocks or guides are placed on the thigh bone (femur) and shin bone (tibia) to help direct a surgical saw in removing the diseased bone and cartilage. This method has been considered technically challenging, as accurately placing these blocks can be difficult. In recent years, advanced surgical techniques using robotic assistance have been developed to provide a higher level of accuracy and precision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Millions of people suffer from osteoarthritis, which occurs when there is a breakdown in the cushioning cartilage between joints, such as the knee. When this cartilage wears down, bones begin to rub against each other causing pain, swelling, stiffness and damage to other parts of the knee.

While there is no cure for osteoarthritis, there are multiple treatment options to manage pain and potentially delay the progression of the disease. Your doctor may prescribe exercises, weight loss or medication. If osteoarthritis progresses to an advanced stage and is causing severe pain, surgery may be the best option.

A partial or total knee replacement are common surgical options you may discuss with your doctor. Partial knee replacement — where the surgeon replaces only the diseased part of the knee — is a solution that can benefit sufferers of early to mid-stage osteoarthritis. Total knee replacement — where the surgeon replaces the entire knee joint – is a more common procedure generally reserved for advanced osteoarthritis affecting multiple compartments of the knee. Ask your doctor if a partial or total knee replacement is right for you. With either option today, there is advanced technology that can help your surgeon perform the procedure with a high level of accuracy and precision.

The CORI system is an advancement in the way orthopedic surgeons perform partial and total knee replacement. Every CORI procedure has an individualized plan based on each patient’s unique anatomy. The system works in conjunction with the surgeon’s skilled hands to achieve precise positioning of components during surgery. This level of accuracy can help improve the function, feel and potential longevityof the knee implant. Advanced CORI technology helps the surgeon create a 3D map of your knee.

The CORI system provides robotic assistance through an advanced computer program that relays precise information about your knee to a robotics-assisted handpiece used by the surgeon during the procedure. By collecting patient-specific information, boundaries are established for the robotics-assisted handpiece so the surgeon can balance your joint and position components with accuracy and precision. Advanced CORI technology helps the surgeon accurately position the implant. Advanced instrumentation designed to enforce bone resurfacing within the surgeon-defined plan Computer assistance designed to ensure consistent and accurate results Robotics-assisted handpiece delivers the power of robotics into the surge

Consistent results, Accurately placed components, Customized planning, No CT-scan required Other robotics-assisted surgical platforms require a costly CT-scan, which exposes patients to unnecessary radiation equivalent to 48 chest radiographs.

This is based on patient condition, however it shall be short stay as compared to conventional method. Short stay in hospital is possible as we do pre operative diagnostic assessment will be done at home by Apollo Diagnostics & consultation will be on the Apollo 24/7 app. Post operative rehabilitation will be in the comfort of home by Apollo Homecare

The patient is mobilized on the next day of the surgery & assisted with rehabilitation care to get back to normal lifestyle in about two weeks time

Yes, but doctors will take up the patient for surgery only if the patients BP & Diabetes is in permissible limit for the surgery
