Kidney Cancer

Kidney Cancer

Treatment

  • Radical nephrectomy- removal of the kidney and sometimes the adrenal gland.
It is the most common surgery for kidney cancer and can be done either open, laparoscopic or robotic surgery..
  • Partial nephrectomy - removal of only the cancer tissue of the kidney. This procedure is used for patients with smaller tumors.
  • Radiofrequency (RF) ablation : uses high-energy radio waves to heat the tumor. This treatment is used in very selective cases.
  • Radiation therapy is not used to cure kidney cancer but does help to relieve symptoms in selective cases. Radiotherapy is being increasingly used in patients with only one functioning kidney. SBRT(Stereotactic body radiotherapy) in 3-5 days can deliver a tumoricidal dose of radiotherapy and conserve the functioning kidney, thus avoiding lifelong dialysis.
  • Chemotherapy
uses very powerful drugs (targeted therapy and/or immunotherapy) to stop the growth of cancer cells. Unfortunately, kidney cancer cells are usually resistant to conventional chemotherapy.
