Fallopian Tube Cancer

Fallopian Tube Cancer

Treatment

  • Surgery is the main treatment for fallopian tube cancer. The type of surgery depends on the stage of cancer, its size and spread.
  • Salpingo-oophorectomy - removal of one or both fallopian tubes and ovaries. It is used to treat early-stage fallopian tube cancers.
  • Total hysterectomy and bilateral – removal of the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes.
  • Radiation therapy uses high-energy X-rays to kill cancer cells or stop their growth. Radiation therapy is not a common form of treatment in fallopian tube cancers. It is used as palliative treatment in advanced fallopian tube cancers.
  • Chemotherapy may be recommended for treating advanced or recurrent fallopian tube cancer. It is also used when cancer has metastasized (spread) into other organs or tissues. Chemotherapy is sometimes recommended after surgery if there's an increased risk that the cancer might return. It can also be used before surgery to shrink the cancer.
  • Targeted drug therapy The indication for targeted therapy is based on molecular changes in the cancer cell. This is usually combined with chemotherapy and may be an option in selected cases. In case of recurrent disease, based on the molecular alterations noted in the tumor, specific targeted therapy may be an option.
  • Immunotherapy is a drug treatment that uses the immune system to fight cancer. For fallopian tube cancer, immunotherapy may be considered in a carefully selected group of patients where investigations show that immunotherapy may be beneficial.
