Fallopian Tube Cancer

Fallopian Tube Cancer

Diagnosis

  • Clinical Examination - A complete clinical examination followed by a pelvic examination. The doctor will do a pelvic exam to check if there is a pelvic mass. For this, the doctor inserts a device called a speculum into the vagina. The speculum opens up the vagina so that the doctor can check for abnormalities.
  • Biopsy - Generally, early stage tumors are surgically resected/ removed and pathology is established (frozen section). In advanced cancers, tissue samples are obtained through a CT/ ultrasound guided biopsy.
  • Ultrasound/ Transvaginal Ultrasound - Using sound waves to create a picture of the uterus and fallopian tubes. The doctor may recommend a Transvaginal ultrasound to look at the thickness and texture of the endometrium. This test helps the doctor look for abnormalities in the uterine lining.
  • CT scan is a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses x-rays to build cross-sectional images of the body. It also helps to identify the spread of cancer.
  • Magnetic Resonance imaging (MRI) uses the interaction of radio waves and magnetic field which is processed in a high speed computer system to produce detailed scan pictures of the tissue, organs, bones, ligament and cartilage. It may be useful in detecting tumors and their metastases. This diagnostic technique offers greater soft tissue contrast than a CT scan. A contrast may be injected into a vein before the scan for better imaging.
MRI scans do not subject the patient to radiation and are very useful to determine the extent of spread into the wall of the uterus, the extent of spread to the nodes and the status of the liver.
  • PET CT is considered to assess spread to regional nodes or distant metastases to other parts of the body. It provides functional and morphological details by using a radioactive isotope to identify the sites to which a cancer has spread.
  • Blood test- Tumor Markers - Elevated levels of CA125 is a non-specific tumor marker.
  • Pathology- The collected tissue sample is sent to the lab for further evaluation like Histopathology evaluation (HPE) and Immunohistochemistry (IHC)
