Bone Tumor Risk Factors

The exact cause of primary bone cancer is unknown. But there are certain risk factors that can increase your chance of getting the disease.

  • Age: Most primary bone cancers occur in teenagers.
  • Previous cancer treatment: The risk may be slightly higher in people who have received high doses of radiotherapy to a bone area.
  • Paget's disease: A disease that affects the replacement of old bone tissue with new bone tissue.
  • Inherited Genetic syndromes: certain genetic conditions such as Li-Fraumeni syndrome and hereditary retinoblastoma can increase the risk of bone cancer.
  • Benign bone tumor: These can become malignant over a period of time.
