Brachytherapy Introduction

Brachytherapy (internal radiotherapy) is a type of radiotherapy used to treat cancer. In this method, the radioactive source of radiation is placed either very close to the tumor or within the tumor itself to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors.
It can be categorised into interstitial brachytherapy, surface mould brachytherapy, intra -cavitary brachytherapy or intraluminal brachytherapy based upon where the radiotherapy source is placed. Brachytherapy can also be classified as low dose rate (LDR), medium dose rate (MDR) or high dose rate (HDR) depending on the dose rate of the radioactive source. Brachytherapy can be done in relatively small tumors.
