Blood and Marrow Transplantation (BMT)

Blood and Marrow Transplantation Indications

Bone marrow transplants are performed when a person’s marrow isn’t healthy enough to function properly. This could be due to benign blood disorders, or cancer-related blood disorders.

Some reasons for a bone marrow transplant include:

  • Aplastic Anaemia
  • Thalassemia Major (where the body makes an abnormal form of haemoglobin)
  • Sickle Cell Anaemia, (an inherited blood disorder that causes misshapen red blood cells)
  • Other inherited blood disorders – primary immune deficiency disorders and metabolic disorders
  • Cancers that affect the bone marrow, such as Multiple Myeloma, leukaemias (Acute Myeloid Leukaemia - AML, Acute Lymphocytic Leukaemia - ALL, Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia - CML), and lymphomas (Hodgkin’s and Non-Hodgkin’s).
