- Indication
- Investigate symptoms- Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing and gastrointestinal bleeding.
- Diagnose - Anaemia, bleeding, inflammation, diarrhoea or cancers of the digestive system.
- Treat- A bleeding vessel to stop bleeding, widening a narrow oesophagus, clipping off a polyp or removing a foreign object.
- Procedures:
- During an upper endoscopy procedure patient is asked to lie down on the table this is usually done under sedation, the medication is given through a vein in the forearm and helps the patient relax during the endoscopy. The endoscope is inserted through the mouth. The patient is asked to swallow as the scope passes down the throat.
- A tiny camera at the tip transmits images to a video monitor. The doctor sees the images on the monitor to look for abnormalities in the upper digestive tract. If abnormalities are found in the digestive tract,
