  • Heart and Lung Transplant Program Gives Critically Ill Patients a Second Chance at Life
    Press Releases

India’s most Comprehensive Heart and Lung Transplant Program gives critically ill patients a second chance at life

Over 600 heart and lung transplants and 1,000 ECMO cases mark a major national milestone in advanced critical careConsistent, high-survival outcomes position Apollo Hospitals, Chennai as India’s leader in advanced heart and lung failure management  Chennai, 22 January 2026: Apollo Hospitals, Chennai continues to set national benchmarks in the treatment of advanced heart and lung disease, driven by one of India’s most comprehensive heart, lung, and ECMO-supported transplant programs. The transplant team, with significant national and international experience, have performed 600+ heart and lung transplants, managed over 2,000 transplant patients, 1,000+ Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) cases, along with 250+ Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVAD) procedures and 250+ Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH) interventions. The multidisciplinary heart-lung transplant and MCS program at Apollo expertly manages patients with end-stage heart and or lung failure, offering personalised solutions for those who no longer respond to maximal medical therapy. Be it a stabilising, bridging or definitive treatment with transplanting   hearts and lungs, or implanting durable mechanical cardiac pumps for failing hearts, our patients are supported through a continuum of focused and evidence-based care. The team also offers comprehensive solutions for even the most complex cardiopulmonary conditions, such as the gold standard treatment of Pulmonary Endarterectomy (PEA) for appropriate patients with CTEPH, where the chronic blood clots in the lung arteries are removed surgically. The press conference held to mark this milestone featured patients from different age groups and levels of illness severity, who shared how their lives were transformed by the program. Among them were Mr. Raja Sivagurunathan (59), who survived a critical phase on ECMO support for 48 days before undergoing an emergency double-lung transplant; Mr. B. Saravanan (45), who developed sudden and severe lung failure and was supported on life-saving machines for two weeks until a successful lung transplant; and Mr. Radhae Shyam Raghuvanshi (72), whose condition worsened abruptly and who was airlifted to Chennai before receiving a double-lung transplant after advanced support.   Commenting about ECMO and Transplantation, Dr. Srinivas Rajagopala, Senior Consultant & Clinical Lead - Pulmonology, Sleep Medicine and Lung Transplant, Apollo Hospitals Chennai said, “These outcomes demonstrate how early and appropriate use of ECMO can fundamentally alter the course of severe lung failure. It provides a vital bridge allowing time for stabilisation, informed decision-making, and preparation for lung transplantation. Success lies in constant vigilance, multidisciplinary teamwork, and highly personalized care. Our goal is always meaningful recovery, not merely short-term survival.” Dr. R Ravi Kumar, the Clinical Lead for Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiology, Apollo Hospitals Chennai, described how Apollo Hospitals was achieving superior outcomes for the sickest patients with end-stage heart failure. “The team at Apollo Hospitals, with its evolving national program, is already delivering a unique clinical service that is succeeding in reducing both time to transplant and mortality on the waitlist.  We hope to repeat this at other Apollo Hospitals facilities beyond Chennai and Bangalore”. Dr. Kumud Kumar Dhital, Head of Heart and Lung Transplantation at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, emphasized “Patients suffering from advancing heart and lung failure, with escalating medical therapy and declining quality of life, deserve to be informed of the transplant options at a far earlier stage.  Outcomes improve significantly when patients are referred early and managed with strong, protocol-driven hospital care. Age itself is not a limitation - what matters is careful evaluation, optimization, meticulous surgery, expert after-care in the ICU, and life-long post-discharge continuity of care so as to maximize chances of long-term survivorship.” Dr. IIankumaran Kaliamoorthy, CEO – Chennai Region, Apollo Hospitals also participated in the press conference. As India’s burden of advanced heart and lung disease continues to rise, Apollo Hospitals remains at the forefront of comprehensive cardiothoracic transplantation, combining innovation, expertise, and compassionate care- proving that even the most critical organ failure can be transformed into a second chance at life. Apollo Hospitals delivers 360-degree care through an integrated, multidisciplinary model involving cardiology, pulmonology, cardiothoracic surgery, anaesthesia, critical care, transplant coordination, rehabilitation, and seamlessly coordinates this with post-discharge and long-term follow-up. The program’s focus extends beyond survival to restoring functional independence and quality of life for patients while fully informing and supporting their families. ECMO serves as a vital life-support technology within this ecosystem. This mechanical support temporarily takes over the function of the heart and/or lungs when conventional therapies fail. By oxygenating blood outside the body, ECMO allows failing organs to rest and recover or acts as a crucial bridge to recovery or transplantation. The program integrates VV-ECMO for lung support, VA-ECMO for cardiac and combined heart-lung failure. LVADs in the form of implantable and mechanical heart pumps are offered to suitable candidates as durable alternatives or bridge to heart transplantation.

Apollo Foundation and Billion Hearts Beating Expand Smart Ambulance Emergency Care

Apollo Foundation, in collaboration with the Billion Hearts Beating Foundation (BHB), has strengthened pre-hospital emergency care with the deployment of seven Smart Ambulances across Bengaluru, New Delhi and Navi Mumbai. Operated by Apollo Hospitals and supported by Marsh McLennan as part of its CSR initiative, the programme marks a significant step towards delivering timely, technology-enabled critical care at the community level.  Designed as mobile intensive care units, the Smart Ambulances bring advanced, connected emergency care closer to patients, ensuring that treatment begins the moment help arrives — not when hospital doors open. Each ambulance is equipped with advanced life-support systems including cardiac monitors, ventilators and defibrillators, along with digital clinical tools that support faster, more accurate decision-making during transit.  A key feature of the Smart Ambulance programme is real-time audio-visual connectivity, enabling Apollo Hospitals’ doctors to be virtually present inside the ambulance. This allows physicians to guide trained paramedics as care is initiated en route, ensuring seamless coordination with hospital emergency teams. Live GPS tracking further keeps hospitals and families informed, allowing emergency departments to prepare in advance for incoming patients and ensuring continuity of care from first response to definitive treatment. These state-of-the-art ambulances were formally unveiled in the presence of leadership from Apollo Foundation, Apollo Hospitals, Billion Hearts Beating Foundation and Marsh McLennan, reinforcing the need to strengthen emergency response capabilities in rapidly growing urban regions. In Bengaluru, the ambulances have already been deployed at community health camps, benefiting over 23,000 people by bringing advanced medical support closer to underserved populations. The initiative was launched in partnership with Marsh McLennan and inaugurated in the presence of Mr. Sanjay Kedia, CEO, Marsh McLennan & President, Marsh India, reinforcing a shared vision to reimagine emergency care through speed, technology and compassion. Together, Apollo Foundation, Billion Hearts Beating Foundation and Apollo Hospitals aim to build a responsive, community-centric emergency healthcare ecosystem that delivers critical care beyond hospital boundaries, when every second truly matters.

India on the brink of a cardiovascular disaster, need remedial measures on war footing to control BP levels
Hyderabad, 16th May, 2018: World Hypertension Day (WHD) is observed on 17th of May every year to raise awareness on Hypertension and World Hypertension League (WHL) ensures its observation world over. The theme of WHD is ‘Know Your Numbers’ with an aim to increase awareness on high blood pressure. The theme being pertinent considering that only 50% of those with hypertension are aware of their condition. In certain communities the awareness is as dismally low as 10%. Of those who are diagnosed, less than half are treated and only a small percentage achieve normal BP levels. WHD is to raise the awareness levels and make individuals conscious about hypertension and the necessary precautions. Incidentally, the South Asia Regional Office of World Hypertension League is located in Hyderabad at Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills.India is unfortunately being dubbed as the ‘Hypertension Capital’ of the world and it has become India’s number one killer.High blood pressure affects both genders and people of all ages.People should be aware of high blood pressure.Usually high blood pressure causes no symptoms until the damage is done. It is a SILENT KILLER.The community should be aware of this dangerous condition. If you know your name and date-of-birth, you should know your blood pressure number. Know your numbers.High blood pressure can be easily detected, easily diagnosed, easily treated and easily controlled.High blood pressure (hypertension) is the principal reason for Indian people to suffer from heart attacks, heart failure, stroke-paralysis, kidney failure, and loss of memory. At present, 140 million people in India have hypertension. This number is expected to go up to 214 million in the next 10 years.High blood pressure is not just an urban phenomenon, now it has become a big problem in the rural areas all over India.Apollo research has recently confirmed that high blood pressure is very much prevalent in the remote rural area, through its study at Aragonda in Chittoor District.High blood pressure does not go away by itself or evaporate. It has to be treated properly and methodically. The outlook for untreated high blood pressure is same as the outlook for untreated cancer. In other words, high blood pressure has the same significance as cancer.Telangana StatisticsTelangana has the 2nd highest rate of high blood pressure in the country.According to the report by the national institute of nutrition, 39% men and 29% of women have high blood pressure in Telangana.Medak district has the dubious distinction with high levels of blood pressure in the populace.Unfortunately, high BP is striking young individuals in our city, the condition is turning alarming and a cause for great concern. If we don’t take care of this immediately, the young are at a risk of stroke/paralysis, heart attack, and kidney failure. BP should be checked even in the young at schools, colleges, work place, IT industry, etc. The trend of high BP in the young is extremely serious and requires urgent attention. The definition of hypertension has changed this year. Any blood pressure more than 130/80 is considered hypertension. Previously high blood pressure was applicable only if the blood pressure is more than 140/90. Now, the new definition of hypertension is a blood pressure is 130/80 or more. India should be ready for this new definition. It is imperative on the part of the media to disseminate information about the definition of high blood pressure, its dangers, and complications, the media has to sensitize the lay public about high blood pressure and increase the awareness.High BP can cause heart attacks, heart failure, stroke-paralysis, loss of memory, and kidney failure. If these complications occur, life becomes miserable, frequent visits to the doctor, frequent hospitalizations, chronic illness, surgery, stents, dialysis, loss of productivity, and deprivation of life. Fortunately, one can diagnose high BP easily, get treated in order to remain healthy. If the diagnosis is doubtful, one can undergo 24 hr BP recordings with an automatic device—to confirm or exclude the diagnosis. Every adult should know their BP number—like knowing one’s name, age, weight, height, YOU MUST KNOW YOUR NUMBERS. Get the BP checked. Otherwise, you are gambling with life.Costs including financial/social/societal of untreated high BP are astronomical. According to estimates the annual cost of medical care of patients with hypertension related disease in India is $20 billion. Vascular surgery, heart surgery, dialysis, transplantation, and stroke rehabilitation are very expensive. These complications can be prevented by keeping your BP normal. With life-style changes, dietary caution, and medicines, it is possible to lower your BP. But if the BP is neglected or not treated early on, it is tough to get it under control. So, the key is awareness, early diagnosis, and early treatment. Waiting is harmful. BP will not evaporate, it stays and gets worse. In some patients, the high BP could be because of “secondary” hypertension, like Thyroid gland disease, adrenal gland problems, blockage of circulation to the kidney, certain kidney ailments. Heavy snoring/ sleep apnea can cause very high BP and the remedy is to treat the snoring disorder. BP problems in pregnancy can be extremely dangerous for the mother and the fetus. Excessive alcohol use or pain relievers can cause high BP. Patients with secondary hypertension can be cured or improved by correcting the underlying cause. The doctors can suspect a secondary cause and if it is fixed, BP will become normal. It also manifests differently in different people, in some the blood pressure goes up only in the doctor’s office or hospital but is normal outside (at home or work), this is called “white coat hypertension.” Nervous individuals, and “tense” people may have white coat hypertension. In some others, the blood pressure is normal in the doctor’s clinic or hospital but is high outside (at home or work). This is called “reverse” white coat hypertension or “masked” hypertension. These abnormal conditions can be diagnosed by measuring 24 hr blood pressure (at home or work) with an automatic machine.BP in pregnancy is dangerous condition, it affects two individuals, the mother and fetus and we have to have an accurate measure of the mother’s BP. Through ‘Automatic Controlled BP Monitoring’ BP can be recorded for 24 hours accurately and detect BP accurately to control BP. He also pointed out that the current modus of measuring BP from the arm is not totally accurate, it’s done for the sake of convenience. But the real BP is what is felt in the heart, if the BP in the heart is high your risk is high. BP of the heart or Aortic BP is measured by a non-invasive method, no needle, no intervention.Apollo Hospital’s BP clinic and BP institute specialize in hypertension where proper testing, monitoring, and treatment facilities are available through dedicated staff—specializing in hypertension, a one of its kind Clinic in Asia. At Apollo, we can even measure the blood pressure in the heart (non-invasively) and it is one of the best ways to know if you really have high blood pressure. In some people high blood pressure may be due to a cause in the body called “secondary” hypertension. Certain endocrine gland diseases, blockage of circulation to the kidney, and kidney problems can cause “secondary” hypertension which can be cured by correcting the underlying cause. We have many patients in whom the blood pressure was “cured” by correcting/rectifying the underlying cause. Evaluation for “secondary” hypertension is very critical in young individuals with hypertension. Don’t forget the correct “work-up.” By choosing appropriate treatment, blood pressure can be made normal. Choosing the right drugs is the key to successful control of hypertension.

School students send inspiring letters with messages of support to cancer warriors treated at Apollo Proton Ca...
“My dear friend, life is not about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about dancing in the rain. Likewise, you bounce back with that energy to fight for anything come what may.” This was one of the 100 letters written by students of Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Mylapore, Chennai, to cancer patients who are getting treated at the Apollo Proton Cancer Centre (APCC).On receiving the letter from one of the students, 55-year-old Mr. S. Nambiar’s eyes welled up with tears of joy. He said, “This is a very kind gesture and it brought back many old memories.”In this modern age, written communication is mostly done either through emails, WhatsApp messages or other social media interactions, but there’s always a special joy in receiving a letter from near and dear ones and more so, from a stranger. To evoke the feeling of happiness in receiving a letter and to build a strong bond of friendship, APCC in collaboration with Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Mylapore, has launched a unique initiative called ‘The Warriors’ Smile’ wherein students write encouraging and affectionate letters to patients undergoing cancer treatment. The activity will be organised every month in line with Apollo Cancer Centres’ initiative of ‘Tender Loving Care’.It is aimed at adding compassion and positivity into the lives of cancer warriors so that they can stay strong in their journey to win over cancer.Commenting on the initiative, Mr. Harshad Reddy, Director – Operations, Group Oncology & International, Apollo Cancer Centres, said, “Apollo has always been synonymous with the best-in-class treatment and defined the level of excellence in every initiative. From creating awareness among the masses about cancer, bringing cancer conversations to the forefront, and prioritizing patients at every step of the treatment, Apollo has created a world of its own built on the foundation of Tender Loving Care. I take pride in this initiative and the positive impact it is destined to create on patients today and tomorrow.”On the occasion, Mr Harish Trivedi, Chief Executive Officer, Apollo Proton Cancer Centre, said, “This unique initiative ‘The Warriors’ Smile’, aligned with our mission of providing our patients with the best possible care, is bound to have a profound impact on their motivation and strength. It is splendid how some gentle words and caring actions can create ripples of soothing the worst of pains in the hardest times. I would also like to thank Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Mylapore, for associating with us for this encouraging step towards promoting happiness and liveliness.”With a motto of promoting a light and happy environment for the cancer warriors, this initiative stands true to the cause of keeping the patients calm and persuade them to go strong on their journey of healing.

IPL Sunrisers join hearing implanted girls, to celebrate 3 years of ‘Hearing Impaired Girl Child Project’ init...
Over 70 hearing impaired girls benefit from the project, since its launch by IPL Sunrisers HyderabadMay 3rd, 2018: IPL Sunrisers team members, Rashid Khan, Carlos Brathwaite, Sandeep Sharma, Siddarth Kaul and Tom Moody, joined the celebration of over 70 hearing impaired girls benefitting from the ‘Hearing Impaired Girl Child Project’ (HIGCP), initiated by Apollo Hospitals & SAHI, three years ago, on Thursday at Apollo Medical College, Jubilee Hills. The project was incidentally launched by the Sunrisers team in 2015. Also present on the occasion were Dr. Sangita Reddy, Ms. Upasana Kamineni & ENT Surgeons Dr. EC Vinaya Kumar, Dr. K Rambabu, Dr. Jaswinder Singh and other consultants. The IPL team members later interacted with the girls, besides playing cricket with them.  As per WHO estimates, approximately 63 million people suffer from significant hearing impairment every year in India. 4-5 babies in every 1000 born suffer from severe to profound hearing loss in India. If left untreated in the first 3-5 years of life, these children end up with hearing and speech disorders throughout their lifetime.HIGCP has been helping hearing impaired girls under the age of fifteen, by providing the state-of-the-art Cochlear implant and performing the surgery, free of cost. HIGCP bears the entire cost of approximate Rs. 8 lakhs per child. The one-year Auditory Verbal Therapy required Post-surgery, is funded by Pink Crocodile, an international NGO.We have a strong rationale to focus on the girl child for this project, says Dr E.C. Vinay Kumar, Head, Dept. of ENT, Apollo Health City and Secretary, SAHI. The reasons are varied, a hearing-impaired girl is at a greater risk of facing abuse both physically and mentally. Historically too, the needs of a female child is often neglected by parents and the prohibitive cost of treatment only inhibits them, they instead prefer to divert their limited resources to address their son’s aspirations. Also, a hearing and speech impaired girl is in greater danger of remaining unemployed, unmarried or being ill-treated at her in-law’s place, he adds.Cochlear Implant Surgery will empower a hearing-impaired girl child, help her evolve into a respectable citizen, besides enabling her to achieve her dreams and ambitions. She will be able to live life on her own terms, says Dr Rambabu, ENT Surgeon, Apollo Health City & Director Medical Services, SAHI.About Society to Aid the Hearing Impaired (SAHI)In November of 2004, a group of ENT surgeons, audiologists, and hospital management personnel, united with concerned citizens, to form SAHI. It is an Indian NGO that aims at helping underprivileged children with impaired hearing. SAHI mainly seeks to identify and aid children living in rural areas, with little or no access to modern medical treatment.Since its establishment, SAHI has been addressing this problem by means of conducting camps in remote areas of the state. Children with learning disabilities or hearing loss are given hearing aids by SAHI and those with ear diseases are given free ear surgeries.About Apollo HospitalsIt was in 1983, that Dr.Prathap Reddy made a pioneering endeavour by launching India’s first corporate hospital – Apollo Hospital in Chennai. A 93-year-old man had robotic CABG surgery, making him India’s oldest patient to date. Many patients above the age of 70 and 80 has been successfully saved in the past few months through robotic cardiac surgeries.Robotic cardiac surgery is a minimally invasive method that allows patients to return to their daily lives considerably more quickly than open-heart surgery. Surgeons have greater vision, precision, accuracy, and control, and the patients will have less discomfort, fewer post-operative wound infections, less scarring, and improved respiration when undergoing a Robotic assisted procedure. Recovery is quick, with less time in the hospital, quicker mobilisation, and rehabilitation. This is the best option for patients with diabetes and older patients.Dr. MM Yusuf, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Apollo Hospitals and team have operated on many patients above the age of 70 and about 10 patients over the age of 80 in the past few months. The oldest patient who underwent Robotic assist CABG is 93-years-old and he is also the oldest patient who underwent CABG surgery in India till date. In octogenarians with multiple co- morbidities especially during the COVID pandemic, Robotic Assist CABG proved a boon to treat them with least post-operative complications and enabled quick recovery. These patients were not suitable for open surgery and would have been left with no definitive treatment options if Robotic surgery was not available.Speaking about the procedure Dr. MM Yusuf, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Apollo Hospitals, said, “Minimally invasive Cardiac surgery avoids sternal split and aids quick recovery. Robotic assist CABG is the least invasive cardiac surgery procedure available now. This surgery involves making tiny holes in the chest cavity through which surgery is performed with the help of the DaVinci Robotic system. Most patients also do not have any cut in the legs since the 2 arteries in the chest wall are used to perform the bypass surgery. Patients have very little blood loss and pain and recover quickly. Hospital stay is usually 2 to 3 days and return to full normal activity will be in 2 to 3 weeks as opposed to 3 months or more with open CABG. This unique procedure is performed in very few centres across the globe.”Ms. Suneeta Reddy, Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals Group, said, “Our mission has always been to introduce the latest medical technology to India for the benefit of our patients. We want more people to be able to take advantage of our hospital’s cutting-edge surgical and medical treatment. At Apollo Hospitals, we put the patient first in all we do and deliver world-class treatment that is both accessible and affordable. We are convinced that such medical discoveries will alter the lives of many more individuals who are unable to undergo traditional heart surgery.”Robotic Assisted CABG is the least invasive method of minimally invasive cardiac surgery. Blood loss and pain are negligible. Hospital stay is very short and recovery is extremely quick. This procedure is suitable to treat many patients with single and multi-vessel vessel coronary artery disease. Patients can return back to full normal activity with two weeks.

Apollo in partnership with RNTCP, commemorates the World TB Day, by releasing an animation film and hosting fl...
Hyderabad, March 23, 2018: As part of the Public Private Partnership initiative to control Tuberculosis, Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad and RNTCP (Revised National Tuberculosis Control Program), Telangana, jointly hosted the World TB Day – 2018 program, on the eve of World TB Day(March 24th),on Friday at Apollo Health City. Each year, world-over the day is commemorated to raise public awareness about the devastating health, social and economic consequences of tuberculosis (TB) and to step up efforts to end the global TB epidemic. The theme of World TB Day 2018 – “Wanted: Leaders for a TB-free world”– focuses on building commitment across globally in all sectors – including governments, NGOs, private partners in the fight against TB.  The program was attended by Chief Guest Dr. Ch. Surya Prakash, Joint Director (TB) and STO– Telangana; Guests of Honor Dr. K. Hari Prasad, President, Hospitals Division, Apollo Hospitals and Dr. Suneetha Narreddy, Consultant, Infectious Diseases, Apollo Hospitals, patients, volunteers and public. An animation film on TB was released and a Flash mob dance was performed on the occasion to sensitize the society about the disease.Despite significant progress over the last few decades, TB continues to be the top infectious killer worldwide, claiming over 4,500 lives a day. The emergence of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) poses a major health security threat and could risk gains made in the fight against TB.The epidemic of tuberculosis (TB) is likened to the tip of an iceberg, with significant numbers unreached by the public health systems, globally. In India with an estimated incidence of 2.8 million, only 1.7 million TB cases were notified in 2015. Over a million cases are missing from the national notification system, posing a severe threat to the efforts towards ending TB by 2035, as per the ‘End TB strategy.’ Most of these seek care outside the national TB program in the private sector which is the first point of contact for nearly 80% of the general population. There is currently no mechanism in place in the private sector to follow up patients for adherence and treatment completion and response to treatment is not known. To overcome this precarious situation mainly in the private sector, Apollo Hospitals in partnership with The Union South East Asia office, supported by Eli Lilly Foundation piloted an innovative eHealth intervention to engage corporate hospitals for TB notification and adherence support. As part of this a software was developed, which interfaces with ‘Nikshay’ –the Government’s web-based case-based notification system; and facilitates reminders for treatment adherence. Counselling services are provided through a trained counsellor as a follow up to the messages sent. The program was initiated in June 2015 and has till date reported over 700, as against a mere 1700 patients reported from the entire combined AP and Telangana in the private sector, in the same time period. Apollo has already expanded this program to all the Apollo Hospitals in Hyderabad and is working on expanding the same to other cities as well.About Apollo HospitalsIt was in 1983, that Dr. Prathap Reddy made a pioneering endeavour by launching India’s first corporate hospital – Apollo Hospital in Chennai.
