Apollo Foundation and Billion Hearts Beating Expand Smart Ambulance Emergency Care

Apollo Foundation, in collaboration with the Billion Hearts Beating Foundation (BHB), has strengthened pre-hospital emergency care with the deployment of seven Smart Ambulances across Bengaluru, New Delhi and Navi Mumbai. Operated by Apollo Hospitals and supported by Marsh McLennan as part of its CSR initiative, the programme marks a significant step towards delivering timely, technology-enabled critical care at the community level.  Designed as mobile intensive care units, the Smart Ambulances bring advanced, connected emergency care closer to patients, ensuring that treatment begins the moment help arrives — not when hospital doors open. Each ambulance is equipped with advanced life-support systems including cardiac monitors, ventilators and defibrillators, along with digital clinical tools that support faster, more accurate decision-making during transit.  A key feature of the Smart Ambulance programme is real-time audio-visual connectivity, enabling Apollo Hospitals’ doctors to be virtually present inside the ambulance. This allows physicians to guide trained paramedics as care is initiated en route, ensuring seamless coordination with hospital emergency teams. Live GPS tracking further keeps hospitals and families informed, allowing emergency departments to prepare in advance for incoming patients and ensuring continuity of care from first response to definitive treatment. These state-of-the-art ambulances were formally unveiled in the presence of leadership from Apollo Foundation, Apollo Hospitals, Billion Hearts Beating Foundation and Marsh McLennan, reinforcing the need to strengthen emergency response capabilities in rapidly growing urban regions. In Bengaluru, the ambulances have already been deployed at community health camps, benefiting over 23,000 people by bringing advanced medical support closer to underserved populations. The initiative was launched in partnership with Marsh McLennan and inaugurated in the presence of Mr. Sanjay Kedia, CEO, Marsh McLennan & President, Marsh India, reinforcing a shared vision to reimagine emergency care through speed, technology and compassion. Together, Apollo Foundation, Billion Hearts Beating Foundation and Apollo Hospitals aim to build a responsive, community-centric emergency healthcare ecosystem that delivers critical care beyond hospital boundaries, when every second truly matters.

Apollo Chennai Achieves Breakthrough in Complex Coronary Care with Advanced CHIP & ELCA Laser Techniques

Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, has set a new standard in complex cardiac care by successfully treating two high-risk coronary cases. Leveraging the advanced CHIP (Complex High-Risk Indicated Procedure) technique and ELCA (Excimer Laser Coronary Angioplasty), the institution reaffirms its leadership in addressing complex coronary blockages with precision, innovation, and patient-centric expertise.   The team reopened a completely occluded 12-year-old stent using laser angioplasty, restoring blood flow in a challenging, long-standing blockage. In the second case, a 15-year-old stent with severe restenosis and an ejection fraction of just 30 percent required a tailored, high-risk intervention. Supported by IABP (Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump) and ELCA laser therapy, the team successfully cleared the blockage and placed a new-generation stent. Both patients made excellent recoveries and were discharged within 48 hours.  These procedures were led by Dr. Refai Showkathali, Senior Consultant and Interventional Cardiologist at Apollo Hospitals, Greams Road, Chennai, along with the skilled Cath Lab team. Apollo Hospitals also expressed appreciation for the expert insights contributed by Dr. Jaswindar Singh from Washington during the interventions. With each such breakthrough, Apollo Chennai continues to enhance outcomes for patients with complex coronary disease, setting new benchmarks in advanced interventional cardiology.

    Deaf Free Telangana
SOCIETY TO AID THE HEARING IMPAIREDIn November of 2004, a group of ENT surgeons, audiologists, and hospital management personnel, united with concerned citizens, to form SAHI. It is an Indian NGO that aims at helping underprivileged children with impaired hearing. SAHI mainly seeks to identify and aid children living in rural areas, with little or no access to modern medical treatment. Since its establishment, SAHI has been addressing this problem by means of conducting camps in remote areas of the state. Children with learning disabilities or hearing loss are given hearing aids by SAHI and those with ear diseases are given free ear surgeries.DEAF FREE TELANGANASAHI will be celebrating the occasion of its 10th anniversary, by initiating an ambitious programme called the ‘Deaf Free Telangana’ project. SAHI is adopting Chevella parliament constituency with the aim of making it a completely deaf free zone in the next two years. The project includes intensive public awareness programmes, regular camps for children below the age of 15, distribution of hearing aids and corrective surgical procedures for the hearing impaired. This programme will be implemented with the help of Apollo Hospitals and Apollo Institute of Medical Sciences and Research.“Every single time you help someone stand up, you are helping humanity rise.”–Dr. Steve MaraboliIndia sees approximately 750,000, i.e., 5% of the total population having hearing problems. About 40,000 of these individuals are hearing impaired from birth, or acquire hearing loss during early childhood. If left untreated in the first 3-5 years of life, these children end up remaining hearing and speech challenged throughout their lives.SAHI team and Apollo are planning to take its first step in creating a deaf free Telangana by conducting its first camp on the 19th of October in Chevella Town. Apollo medical students are joining hands with SAHI as active volunteers at these camps, hoping to create a better hearing society.

Apollo Children’s Hospitals has launched India’s first Paediatric Liaison Psychiatry Department.
Apollo Children’s Hospital has launched the Apollo Paediatric Psychiatry Liaison & Education department (APPLE), India’s first Paediatric Liaison Psychiatry Department in Chennai. The department was inaugurated by Ms. B. Priyanka Pankajam IAS., Executive Director Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women in the presence of Dr. Preetha Reddy, Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals Group, Ms. Suneeta Reddy, Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals Group and Ms. Gouri G Kishan, popular cine artiste. As a part of the event, Master AR Illamparuthi, under 14 world Youth Chess Champion was honoured and felicitated for his achievements. The unique aspect of the department of ‘APPLE’ – Apollo Paediatric Psychiatry Liaison & Education is the presence of a Liaison Psychiatrist in the entire treatment process of paediatric patients, who would focus on the various mind-related issues while the body of a child heals. Moreover, it also focusses on many conditions which do not have a physiological or pathological reasoning which could be attributed to mental well-being.Speaking during the inauguration, Ms. Suneeta Reddy, Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals Group said, “Good health and wellbeing are holistic in nature involving the mind and the body. When it comes to treating illnesses, we often focus on the body and underestimate the importance of mental wellbeing in the process of healing. Conventionally, this aspect is left to the family to deal with, which is extremely hard especially when the child is going through an illness. It’s for this reason that Apollo Children’s Hospitals is launching a one-of-its-kind Paediatric Liaison Psychiatry Department. We are extremely happy to launch this novel department on Children’s Day”.With the launch of this department, a Liaison Psychiatrist would interact and assess the patients along with the primary paediatrician and super specialists. This assessment ensures that the treatment plan would be amended to include the mental well-being of the child. The Psychiatrist would thereby be the bridge between the patient and the primary physician. The Liaison Psychiatrist would also counsel the parents and help them deal with their child’s illnesses better. This is especially crucial in long term illnesses and highly critical illnesses which require intensive care etc. Examples of these issues could be children dealing with missed classes / schooling, how parents would need to deal with their official responsibilities, personal commitments along with the treatment of their child etc.The Liaison Psychiatrist would also be training nurses and other staff members to interact with patients with empathy and sensitivity depending on their illness. This would reduce friction during their interaction with the child and their parents and would aid in improving their experience during their hospital stay. This new perspective to healing would benefit patients, parents and staff members thereby accelerating healing and result in managing long term and critical illnesses better. The event also featured cultural and entertainment activities including an act where children were dressed up as doctors, nurses and admin staff and walked around the hospital. The children got a feel of running the hospital on their special day. Children who fought back to life after being critically ill were also part of the event. The CSR activities done by Apollo Children’s Hospitals were also on display during the event.

Apollo Cancer Centers joined hands with mural artists and survivors to curate art that educates and empowers every woman about the importance of regular breast self-examination.Through ancient Kerala Mural Art, 8 steps of self-breast examination brought attention to the issue of breast cancer. Each frame reflected the story of a woman who discovered this condition while performing a self-breast examination, acted on time and defeated cancer. These eight steps have also been depicted in a book format called ‘Chitra Sutra’.The Mural Arts were unveiled on October 31, 2022 at Hotel Rain Tree, Anna Salai, Chennai. This unique initiative was inaugurated by actress Prayaga Martin, in the presence of Ms Tanya Mallavarapu Reddy, Founder Mallavarapu Studio, Dr. Rathna Devi, Consultant, Radiation Oncologist, the Eminent Artist Adarsh, Breast Cancer Experts and the winners.Sharing her thoughts at the launch of ArtCan campaign, Actress Prayaga Martin said, “It gives me great pleasure to be a part of the campaign ‘ArtCan’. Art facilitates communication between patients and healthcare personnel by bringing forth insights from the patients’ views that can be communicated to the world. I appreciate Apollo Cancer Centres’ use of art as a medium to educate and raise awareness about self-breast examination. I’m hoping that this initiative will reach women from all over the country and help them win over breast cancer.”Speaking during the launch of the campaign, Ms Tanya Mallavarapu Reddy, Founder, Mallavarapu Studio, said, “It’s a popular belief that life imitates art and hence, art has the power to transcend languages and cultural barriers. The initiative, ArtCan will create a silent conversation and leave a deep impression on the audience. Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer globally and accounts for 25% of all cancer cases in women and reports show that early detection is the key to better outcomes. We believe that the ancient Kerala mural art is a unique medium to create awareness about breast cancer and the importance of breast self-examination”.Speaking on the occasion, Dr, Rathna Devi, Consultant, Radiation Oncologist, said, “In 2022, over 20 lakh cases of breast cancer have been witnessed so far. Apollo Cancer Centres has been a leader in Oncology and has treated multiple complex cancer cases. This initiative will convey our message to the masses to be cautious of breast cancer and understand the symptoms to get tested at an early stage.”The cancer winner shared her thoughts on the initiative, and said, “Apollo Cancer Centre has been my pillar of strength throughout my journey of winning over cancer. Breast cancer came with stigma and loads of challenges, but the timely medical treatment and tender loving care of Apollo helped me through. As a survivor myself, in line with this initiative of ArtCan, I encourage women all around India to get regularly tested for breast cancer. The early detection not only increases the chances of survival but can be treated in the best way possible without complications.”“It was truly fulfilling to work on this one-of-a-kind project, ArtCan. We are glad that Apollo Cancer Centers is using this powerful medium of storytelling through traditional Indian art to disseminate important medical information. Information that can save thousands of lives. At the same time, this effort is shining a spotlight on India’s proud artistic heritage and our master artists, which really aligns with our mission,” said Adarsh, mural artist.Breast Cancer is a result of multiple factors which include environmental and lifestyle changes. In most cases, it is due to anomalies that arise out of the ageing process, while in 5-10% of the cases, it is genetically inherited. Early detection is the best protection against breast cancer. Regular self-examination and mammography at regular intervals have proven to be most effective in early diagnosis and in achieving better results in treatment and cure. Apollo Hospitals has been a pioneer in introducing comprehensive screening protocols for the early detection of breast cancer.

Apollo Institute of Orthopaedics has successfully completed 370 Robotic Knee Replacements.
Apollo Institute of Orthopedics, a dedicated Centre for joint replacements has successfully complete d 370 robotic Orthopedics procedures over ten months since the launch. The Apollo Institute of Orthopedics began offering cutting-edge minimally invasive robotic surgical techniques and technology since January 2022.India is estimated to emerge as the osteoarthritis (OA) capital of the world with 60 miIIion patients by 2025. Osteoarthritis is a growing global concern and knee arthritis contributes the most to the overall burden. Technological advancements such as robotic arm-assisted technology is revolutionizing knee and hip replacement surgeries enabling higher accuracy and significantly improved patient outcome versus the conventional technique.A robotic knee replacement is just like a traditional knee replacement. The surgeon removes damaged tissue in the knee and replaces it with an artificial joint. The highlight is that robotic knee replacement surgery is done with the assistance of a robotic arm or handheld robotic device. Robotic technology helps the surgeon to achieve accuracy, alignment, and balance during the actual surgery. With the help of a robotic arm, the surgeon will shape the surrounding bone before placing the knee implant and will be able to see the knee and position the implant properly. This enables the surgeon to map out incisions and there will be no instrument slipping or injury to other tissues. This procedure is has revolutionized the knee replacement concept.Dr. Madan Mohan Reddy, Joint Replacement Surgeon, Apollo Hospitals said “With the robotic arm, reproduction of precise bone cuts for patients can be done, every single time, first on a virtual 3D model and then in the operation theatre. Several studies prove that patients who underwent robotic arm-assisted surgery experienced improved early function, lower post-operative pain, less need for analgesics, faster recovery and higher patient satisfaction compared to manual surgery. The success rate in conventional knee replacement surgery is about 90% to 95% but with robotic-assisted surgeries, the accuracy is cent per cent. Patients recover faster and relief is long-lasting”Ms. Preetha Reddy, Executive Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals Group said, “At Apollo, we are bringing in cutting edge medical technology, representing the next era of healthcare innovation to treat patients. Robotic Orthopedic procedures have enabled us in helping patients’ recovery from joint and knee ailments with ease. This center has become the busiest center by already completing 370 robotic knee replacement procedures since January 2022. Dr. Madan Mohan Reddy and his team, now holds the distinction of completing the maximum robotic knee replacements in the state of Tamil Nadu.”Apollo Hospitals is excited to bring this world class technology and treatment for patients requiring knee and hip replacement.

    Robotic Assisted Pregnancy
Mrs. Razia is a proud mother today! She was referred to Dr. Rooma Sinha, Senior Consultant – Obgyn from NIMS with history of loss of regnancy at 20 weeks in March 2013 and a fibroid in her left lateral wall of uterus that was preventing future successful pregnancy. The fibroid measured 13 x 9.6 cms size as seen in the preoperative MRI below. An open surgery would further compromise the chances of pregnancy. To overcome this, Robotic Myomectomy was done in September 2013 at Apollo Health City, Hyderabad and subsequently she conceived in the month of November 2013. Her antenatal period remained uneventful and she delivered with us at 37 weeks on August 10th 2014 by caesarean section. The uterine scar was intact, with virtual absence of adhesions intra operatively. Both the mother and baby are doing well. Dr. Rooma Sinha, Dr Madhumati and their teamlooked after Mrs. Razia during this period and successfully delivered her.

Apollo Hospitals, OMR organised an event to salute, honour and celebrate stroke survivors.
Apollo Specialty Hospitals OMR under the guidance of Dr. Karthikeyan, Interventional Neurologist, organized a special event to honor and celebrate stroke survivors on 28th October, 2022. The event was presided over by Prof. Shakir Husain Interventional Neurologist & Stroke Specialist, Mr. Senthil, Actor and Dr. Karthikeyan, Interventional Neurologist, Apollo Specialty Hospital OMR. This one-day event was organized to build awareness on stroke to create and to emphasize on the need for early intervention for quality stroke care.More than twenty stroke survivors were honored with awards and mementos for fighting back and recovering seamlessly. Stroke is a major public health problem in India and worldwide. It is one of the leading causes of acquired disability and mortality which results in considerable socioeconomic impact on the patients, their families and the healthcare delivery system. There are two types of stroke including ischemic stroke which is caused due to reduction in blood supply to a part of the brain and Hemorrhagic stroke which is caused due to leakage of blood into a part of the brain.Nearly eighty percentage of stroke is due to blood clot (ischemic) and 20% is due to bleeding (hemorrhagic). Time is the most important factor because, every minute 1,90,000 brain cells are lost during stroke. With the recent advances, when a stroke patient reaches hospital within 24 hours of onset, symptoms can be reverted back with either a clot busting drug or mechanical thrombectomy which is a pin hole procedure, in which a stent retriever is used to remove the clot from the affected blood vessel.A stroke can happen to anyone, at any time and any age. However, the stroke risk increases with age and after the age of 55, the risk doubles for every decade a person is alive. It is no longer a disease of old age, it is more common in younger age groups also . Around 13 million suffer from stroke every year globally and nearly 10,000 people are affected by stroke in Chennai every year. COVID-19 has increased the incidence of stroke after COVID infection as it increases the tendency to form clots in individuals who have high blood sugar, blood pressure and who are obese.Speaking about stroke care Dr. Karthikeyan, Interventional Neurologist, Apollo Specialty Hospital OMR, said, “The emerging stroke treatments are all time dependent. 4.5 hours is the recognized time limit as of now to initiate an intravenous thrombolysis, in an indicated patient. Any sudden neurological symptom should be considered as a stroke warning sign. For example- Sudden vision loss, double vision, dizzy feeling, vertigo, instability/swaying while standing or walking, facial deviation or asymmetry, difficulty in swallowing, coughing while taking food, change in voice (nasal tone, hoarseness), weakness of arm or leg, altered or loss of sensation in a part of the body especially on one side of the face or body, sudden shaking of limbs, difficulty in speaking, difficulty in understanding speech, inability to repeat a sentence when asked to do so, difficulty in doing a coordinated movement, new onset headache or change in the character of chronic headache etc.”Awareness about stroke, its symptoms, the importance of time in stoke management, stroke prevention methods are abysmally low in our community and this event paved the way to create awareness and to hold hands with the stroke survivors who are on the road to recovery.

To raise awareness about breast cancer, Apollo Proton Cancer Centre had launched a Pan-India initiative ‘Drive Away Breast Cancer’. The initiative was focused on ensuring that every woman has knowledge and understanding about breast cancer, is self-examining for early diagnosis and living a healthy life .As part of this initiative, a couple from Tamil Nadu, Ms. Logeshwari and Mr. Pream set out on a bike journey on June 21, 2022, traversing the length and breadth of the country including Nepal in their Royal Enfield Himalayan to raise awareness about breast cancer. In 120 days, the bikers travelled 18,000 km across 2 countries, 24 states, and 3 union territories to bring breast cancer conversations to the forefront. Forty Royal Enfield Riders from the Chennai Royal Riders Motorcycle Club greeted and escorted them to the Apollo Proton Cancer Centre, Chennai.Ms Alisha Abdhulla, the first female Indian racing driver, Mr. Paul Moses, Administrator of the Chennai Royal Riders Motorcycle Club, and Mr. Harshad Reddy, Director- Operations, Group Oncology & International, Apollo Cancer Centers, greeted the riders and congratulated them on their accomplishment.Sharing the experience of their journey, Ms Logeshwari & Mr. Pream said, “It was a matter of great pride for us to do the entire tour to raise awareness about breast cancer. Being a part of this enlightened us about the need to unite and inspire people against the rising issue of breast cancer. The mission of making India a cancer-free nation should be a top priority for everyone.”Ms. Alisha Abdullah, the first female Indian racing driver, stated, “I’m honored to have witnessed the epic journey of the couple who rode their bikes for 18,000 km to fight breast cancer. It is a disease that affects many women, and it is comforting to know that it can be detected and treated early. I congratulate Apollo Proton Cancer Centre and the riders on a meaningful and novel campaign aimed at women’s welfare.”Commenting on the occasion, Mr. Harshad Reddy, Director- Operations, Group Oncology & International, Apollo Cancer Centers, said, “When it comes to cancer care, Apollo has been a trailblazer. The Drive Away Breast Cancer Initiative aims to raise awareness, reach out to women across the country, and educate them on breast self-examination and early detection. I congratulate the riders who joined our mission and touched the lives of thousands of women along the way. I hope the initiative spreads our message to the general public to be wary of breast cancer and to be aware of the symptoms in order to detect the disease at an early stage.”The rising cases of breast cancer have shifted the focus towards spreading the right message and information about the need for regular screenings to reduce the mortality rate. Breast health still is not a topic of discussion among women .Breast Cancer is a result of multiple factors which include environmental and lifestyle changes.
