APOLLO HOSPITALS LAUNCHES POST COVID RECOVERY CLINIC
The Apollo Hospitals Group today announced the launch of Post-COVID Recovery Clinics across the hospital network. The Post-COVID Recovery Clinics will address the rising number of patients who have recovered from COVID but are suffering from the mid and long term persistent effects of the infection. Over 50% of COVID patients suffer from problems that include breathlessness, chest pain and heart issues, joint pains, vision problems, and memory loss months after contracting the novel corona virus. The Post-COVID Recovery Clinics will be manned by a team of specialists including neurologists and immunologists to help patients deal with the aftermath of COVID-19 and restore them to health. In Indore, the Post-COVID Recovery Clinic will be conducted at the Apollo Hospitals, Vijay Nagar, and Indore.Dr. Ashok Bajpai, Director and Sr Consultant Chest Medicine, Apollo Hospitals, Indore said, “Many patients who have recovered from COVID-19 at our hospitals have been contacting us for symptoms that they are having, and not knowing where to go for them. To address these health issues faced by patients who have recovered from COVID-19, we have started the Post-COVID Recovery Clinics. These exclusive clinics for post-COVID care will help patients to connect to the specialised care that they need. We have laid down the guidelines and have trained the clinicians to ensure that patients get the correct treatment. The clinics will help patients recover completely from the consequences of COVID-19 and return to living life as before COVID.”COVID-19 impacts almost all the vital organs in the body. Apart from acute events like stroke and myocardial infarction, chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension are part of the post-COVID syndrome. A number of sudden deaths in post-covid patients have been reported and most of these are attributed to acute cardiac events.Dr. Sarvesh Maru, Consultant Internal Medicine, Apollo Hospitals, Indore said, “COVID-19 attacks not just the lungs but other organs in the body and leaves behind lingering health issues. Some of the manifestations occur weeks and months after the treatment for acute phase is completed and patient has recovered and impact the well-being ofindividuals beyond the acute phase. While longer-term problems are more common among patients who have been hospitalized, even patients who have recovered from a mild case can suffer from the prolonged effects of the virus. Some of the long-term effects may be severe and disabling in nature. This specialized clinic will enable us to monitor symptoms of patients on an ongoing basis and delivery timely medical attention.”Mr Abhilash Pillai, Unit Head, Apollo Hospitals, Indore said, “Before COVID-19, we were already facing a tsunami of NCDs that were responsible for over 70% of the deaths. The post-COVID syndrome is adding to this disease load and if not addressed with a special focus will lead to an increase in morbidity and mortality beyond the pandemic with a large number of chronically ill individuals who have recovered from COVID. The specialised clinics will prevent acutecomponents of the post-COVID syndrome from progressing further and effectively manage the chronic situations which formpart of the post-COVID syndrome through a patient-focused, comprehensive, teleconsult and clinic based program.”The Post-COVID Recovery Clinics will initially be launched in Apollo hospitals treating COVID in Chennai, Madurai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Mysore, Kolkata,Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, Delhi, Indore, Lucknow, Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Paediatric Heart Surgery Event with Honorable Shri Tulsiram Silawat, Cabinet Minister, Govt. of M.P
Little Heroes all set to make their journey back to home post Heart Surgery at Apollo Hospitals, IndoreIt is estimated that 240,000 children are born with heart diseases every year in India. Less than 10% of them receive care on time. Most with complex heart disorders succumb without even seeing their first birthday! Studies reveal that 10% of all infant mortality can be attributed to congenital heart diseases alone. Others indicate an increase in the number of pediatric cardiac disorders. Added to that is the small numbers of dedicated pediatric centers, fewer pediatric cardio thoracic surgeons, and even lesser pediatric cardiologists.Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) is flagship government initiative aiming at early identification and early intervention for children from birth to 18 years. As part of this initiative recently over 10 children under the age of 10 – were identified through an extensive screening program from districts of Gwalior – and sent on to Apollo Hospitals in Indore in the presence of our honorable CM Shri Shivraj Singh Chauhan earlier this month.Speaking on the occasion and sharing details, Senior Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon Dr Nishith Bhargava shared ‘Upon arrival, we have a detailed protocol whereby the child undergoes a detailed assessment of his heart status. This is followed by a planning for the surgery and in this batch of children we received only seven of them were found to be fit for surgical repair and were operated’’.Adding Dr Sanjukta Bhargava, Senior Consultant, Pediatric Cardiologist shared ”while we were able to offer care to most of the patients, at times we also come across children who cannot be operated upon mostly because of late presentation. In this group too which travelled from Gwalior three kids had passed the time-line and I personally feel the Government is doing a lot of work and over time we should see improvement in this scenario”Dr. Nishith Bhargava has been pivotal in setting up the Pediatric Heart Surgery Department as part of the Apollo Hospitals in Indore. The unit under his leadership has been instrumental in bringing cheer to over 250 little hearts the team operated upon during the short span of 18 months. This includes some path breaking work which included extremely challenging neonatal pacemaker implantation in a 1.8 kg child just 1 day old”.Speaking on the occasion, Shri Tulsiram Silawat, Cabinet Minister, Govt. of M.P. shared; it is such a blessing to see the little lives with a happy smile. They beam with hope, and hope of a new India and I complement Dr. Nishith and the Apollo Hospitals team in the commendable work they are doing in this space.

Apollo Hospitals, Indore announces the introduction of Renal Denervation Therapy
Apollo Hospitals, Indore announces the introduction of Renal Denervation Therapy (RDN) a novel innovation for the treatment of uncontrolled HypertensionIn India, nearly 10.8% of all deaths are because of hypertensionRDN Procedure done by importing RDN device on compassionate groundsIntervention Cardiologist Dr. Sarita Rao amongst the first women cardiologist in SAARC region to.Uncontrolled hypertension can be quite a challenge and life was indeed tough for Mr. Singh at the age of 56 to pass each day with over 8 pills a day to manage his hypertension and still find it difficult to manage. To make matters worse he suffered a brain stroke dur to very high blood pressure and he visited the Heart Institute at Apollo Hospitals, Vijay Nagar and met with Dr. Roshan and Dr. Sarita Rao.Dr. Rao adjusted his medications over a period of one year, on review of his medicines gathered there was no more scope of increasing the dose or adding any further medication and his high blood pressure was not only posing risk to his other organs but had also exposed Mr. Singh with a serious risk of a brain hemorrhage.Upon a detailed assessment by a multidisciplinary team a decision was reached to go for Renal Denervation (RDN) therapy a novel breakthrough in the management of uncontrolled also known as resistant hypertension. The device was specially imported after receiving the regulatory approvals and Mr Singh successfully underwent the procedure on 17th October 2020 which this year is also celebrated as world hypertension day. This procedure was done by the Apollo Indore team comprising of Dr K. Roshan Rao, Dr Sarita Rao, Dr Kshitij Dubey, Dr Vikas Gupta and Dr Shirish Agrawal.Speaking about this, Dr. Sarita Rao, said, “Hypertension is defined as blood pressure that is constantly higher than the recommended level of 140/90 mm Hg. Due to lack of symptoms, this condition gets detected only years after the actual onset. Precautionary measures are therefore a must, especially in those with a family history of the condition. Uncontrolled hypertension can affect most body organs over time and put more load on the heart causing it to enlarge and weaken. Over time, this can lead to heart failure. It is thus imperative to undergo regular health check-ups more so during the Covid-19 pandemic in order to understand whether your vitals are in control or not. It is also imperative to build your immunity by eating healthy and undertaking regular physical exercise.”Adding further they, said, “Hypertension is a chronic condition and lifestyle changes are very important in managing and preventing it. While medication can control blood pressure, it cannot cure the condition. Therefore, the importance of a healthy lifestyle must be inculcated from a very young age, especially in those with a family history of high blood pressure.”Dr. K Roshan Rao, Head of the Cardiology Department quoted that incidentally this procedure was done on world hypertension day; the theme of this years is “Measure Your Blood Pressure, Control It, Live Longer.” which makes people aware of their blood pressure numbers. And what could have been a better day to make people conscious about the disease and to avoid such severe hypertension by apt lifestyle and therapeutic modifications, and now on availability of this new age device at Apollo Indore to treat what otherwise was untreatable.Dr. Ashok Bajpai, Director and Sr Consultant Chest Medicine, Apollo Hospitals, Indore said, “As the leaders of state-of-the-art healthcare in the region, we are happy at this innovative step undertaken by our team of cardiologists, and are confident of introducing more such advancements that help transform the cardiac care paradigm over the coming days. We will continue to enhance and expand our bouquet of services, and lead from the front in the introduction of life-saving innovations that have a major impact on the life and wellbeing.

Apollo Hospitals, Indore accomplishes pin-holeheart valve replacement
Apollo Hospitals, Indore accomplishes pin-holeheart valve replacement using TAVR in 93 year-old man, without open heart surgeryTransAortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedure allows surgery on patients who unsuitable or high risk for open heart surgeryTAVR or TransAortic Valve Replacement, a minimally invasive surgical procedure, was successfully carried out on a 93-year old patient at Apollo Hospitals, Indore despite numerous challenges due to the lockdown. The nonagenarian with severe breathlessness and inability to lie downwas airlifted to Indore, where he was diagnosed witha critical condition of severe stenosis of the aortic valve. The only alternative was a valve replacement that had to be carried out immediately. Open-heart valve replacement surgery was not an option due to age and co-existing health issues including a cardiac history with a bypass surgery, angioplasty, and renal dysfunction. The patient was offered the advanced option of TAVR or Transformative Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), an advanced minimally invasive technique that allows surgery on patients who unsuitable or high risk for open-heart surgery. The advanced procedure was successfully performed on 17thJune 2020. The patient recovered well and was out of bed in just 4 hours, ready to be discharged the next day.Dr. K Roshan Rao, Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, Apollo Hospitals, Indore said,“Patients with calcification of the leaflets of the heart valve, that open and close with the flow of blood, often present with symptoms only after the age of 70-75 years. At this age, a majority are not suitable for open-heart surgery. However, if not treated, survival is difficult. TAVR is a revolutionary technique and a blessing for such patients so that they can have a prolonged healthy lifestyle with improved quality of life. Whereas in conventional open heart surgery, the chest cavity needs to be opened by cutting through the sternum to allow the surgeon to operate on the heart, TAVR is a minimally invasive surgical technique where inner organs are accessed via needle-puncture of the skin, rather than a scalpel.”In TAVR, a miniaturized valve is inserted through a catheter, a thin flexible tube, from the groin into a blood vessel under local anaesthesia. The deployed valve reaches the base of the aorta at the site of the aortic valve. The doctor then opens a balloon that inflates the valve pushing aside the old valve and overcoming the stenosis or narrowing. Using MAC anaesthesia or monitored anaesthesia care, the patient isaware but relaxed throughout the procedure that takes about an hour as compared to 5-6 hours required for an open-heart surgery. There is no need of general anaesthesia, a midline sternal incision, which was required in open heart surgery, thereby reducing prolonged hospitalization, and instead of a week’s stay, a patient who has undergone TAVR goes back home walking on the third day.The other benefits of TAVR include reduced and negligible need for blood transfusions, and reduced stroke risk of less than 1% as against 5-7% in conventional open-heart surgery.Dr. Sarita Yadav Rao, Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, Apollo Hospitals, Indore said, “We are proud of having pulled off this feat at a time when the nation is in a lockdown to fight the COVID pandemic. Reports suggest over 5 lakh elective surgeries were postponed across the country. However, in this case, we could afford to wait for the lockdown to end, as any delay could have worsened the patient’s condition and could have been fatal. The team of doctors included the medical and surgical teams as also experts in infection prevention and control to ensure that all measures for the safety of the patient were taken, and the procedure took place with precautions including the highest Standards of Excellence in Infection Control Protocols and Best Practices. It was a testament to the efforts of the entire team that the procedure was performed with 100% success.”The other members of the team at Apollo Hospitals, Indore included Dr. Shirish Agarwal, Jr. Consultant/ Associate Consultant Cardiologist, Dr. Vikas Gupta, Senior Consultant, Anaesthesia and Dr. KshitijDube, Senior Consultant, CTVS.Dr. Hari Prasad, President, Apollo Hospitals said, “TAVR and other advanced procedures are all set to change the face of cardiac care in India. The benefits when compared to conventional open-heart surgery are incomparable. These advanced minimally invasive procedures allows us give a second lease of life to many patients who were previously classified as too high risk or inoperable. Apollo Hospitals is constantly striving to bring the latest advanced therapies for patients in India. Our trained experts with years of experience in cardiac care use scientific evidence based approaches, precision techniques, cutting-edge devices and medical equipment to overcome any medical challenges. On the anvil are newer structural interventions including Mitral clip, trans-catheter mitral, tricuspid and pulmonary interventions which would allow many patients who cannot undergo surgery to benefit from minimally invasive therapies, giving them new hope and an improved quality of life.”He added, “That this procedure was carried out during the COVID pandemic is testament to our teams commitment to deliver world-class healthcare in the face of any and all challenges. We are proud that even amidst the COVID pandemic and lockout, we have continued to delivery lifesaving healthcare with proper precautions and protocols in place.”About Apollo Hospitals GroupApollo Hospitals was established in 1983 by Dr. Prathap C Reddy, renowned as the architect of modern healthcare in India. CENTRAL INDIA’S FAPOLLO HOSPITALS INDORE SUCCESSFULLY PERFORMSIRST DAY CARE TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT SURGERY
APOLLO HOSPITALS INDORE SUCCESSFULLY PERFORMS CENTRAL INDIA’S FIRST DAY CARE TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT SURGERY~ SUCCESSFULLY PERFORMS CENTRAL INDIA’S FIRST AND COUNTRY’S SECOND DAY CARE TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT SURGERYApollo Hospitals, Indore today achieved a milestone by becoming the first day care centre in the country for both knee and hip replacement that allows the patient to be discharged on the same day. The day care hip replacement surgery, which is the first in Central India and the second in the country, was successfully performed on a 30-year-old female suffering from severe pain in both hip joints since three years. After the surgery, which involved replacement of the damaged left hip joint with prosthetic components, the patient was discharged from the hospital the same evening in less than 12 hours after admission. This less than 12-hour hospital stay is a great advantage over the conventional joint replacement surgery that requires patients to stay in the hospital for up to a week to ten days for post-operative care, and reduces the cost and risk of hospital-acquired infection. Apollo Hospitals, Indore with this milestone also became the only center to perform Day Care( both Knee and Hip)Joint Replacement in India and amongst the few in the world.Dr K Hari Prasad, President, Apollo Group Hospitals, said, “Apollo Hospitals has always been at the forefront when it comes to bringing in cutting-edge medical technology that helps provide the best of services to our patients. With improved surgical techniques such as minimally invasive or robotic surgery and better pain management methods, there is less blood and muscle loss with recovery faster and easier, making outpatient surgery possibleon some elective procedures such as knee and hip replacement. Studies indicate that outpatient total joint replacement is expected to increase 457% for knee replacements and 633% for hip replacements over the next decade . By 2027, over 50% of the joint replacement surgeries will be in an outpatient setting with same day discharge. Proper patient selection and education, multimodal protocols are all key for successful day-case joint replacement. Same-day discharge joint replacement can also help reduce healthcare costs. We are proud that Apollo Hospitals, Indore has led from the front in becoming the first hospital in India to offer both day care knee and hip replacement.”The patient, a 30-year-old lady from Rajasthan, was referred to Apollo Hospitals, Indore with severe pain in both the hip joints since last three years. Her left leg had got shortened by about 3 cm. and the pain had increased to a level that she could only walk with a significant limp. After no relief from treatment at various places outside, she came to Apollo Hospitals, Indore for consultation with Dr Sunil Rajan on 15th September 2020.Dr Sunil Rajan, Orthopedic & Hip, Joint Replacement Surgeon, Apollo Institute of Orthopaedics, Apollo Hospitals, Indore said, “The patient was worked up for her ailment and was diagnosed to have Avascular Necrosis of Ball of both Thigh Bones. She was advised surgery with total replacement of her hip joints. It was decided to replace the left one first as it was more damaged. Due to her fear of getting admitted and operated because of the COVID pandemic, she was offered the option of “Day Care Total Hip Replacement” that would ensure same day discharge and she would not be required to stay in the hospital overnight.”Elaborating on the procedure, Dr Sunil Rajan said, “For day care surgery, complete preoperative preparation is critical for success. A team of a cardiologist and an anesthesiologist did a complete work up of the patient for fitness for anesthesia and surgery prior to admission for surgery. After their clearance, the surgery was planned for 19th November 2020.One day before the surgery, two of the team members went to the patient’s house to assess the facilities with special attention to height of the bed, availability of western closet and grab bar in the bathroom along with checking for any hindrance to movement with walker amongst other aspects to make the home ready for her recovery. The patient’s room and attached washroom was disinfected one day prior to the surgery and closed till she returned from the surgery. The patient and her family or attendants were were trained about strict hand hygiene that they have to follow after surgery. Patient was taught about cleaning to be done before surgery at home.”Describing the surgery, Dr Sunil Rajan said, “The patient was admitted in the morning at 6.30 am and taken to the operation theatre at 8.00 am. DrJayeshJajodia, the anesthesiologist, decided to use general anesthesia with minimal sedation to facilitate the early post-operative mobilization and feeding.Special precautions and medications including adequate painkillers were administered in view of the day care surgery and no use of tubes or drains. The surgery was successfully completed in less than an hour and the patient was shifted to recovery. She was able to take liquids two hours after the surgery and was allowed soft food in the afternoon once her bowel motility returned. The patient was mobilized in the recovery itself with the help of walker. She was discharged from the hospital the same evening at 5.45 PM – in less than 12 hours. One staff nurse and a housekeeping staff was provided to the patient at home for next 48 hours to take good care of her in the post-operative period. Physiotherapy was done as per the routine protocol by physiotherapist visiting the patient at home along with training in performing her activities of daily living.”The patients who are healthy make good candidates for same-day surgery. These include patients younger than 70-80 years without preoperative bleeding disorders, cirrhosis, clinically important cardiac disease or end-stage renal disease. Day care hip and knee replacement has multiple advantages that includes significantly lower cost, reduced infection rate, early mobilisation and recovery, and no need of hospitalization. There isgreater patient satisfaction as the day care procedureputs the patient on the fasttrack to recovery, relieving pain, restoringIndependence and returning the patient to a normal lifestyle.

Transplant Team Transplants 3 liver & A Kidney Back To Back In Less Than 2 Days
• The stupendous effort involved seven surgeries• Apollo Liver transplant team has unprecedented outcomes with a success rate of 97% for all liver transplants & 100% for living donor liver transplantationsHyderabad, November 6, 2014: A Team of Doctors at Apollo Health City, Hyderabad, successfully performed three highly demanding and complex liver transplants and a kidney transplant, involving a mammoth endeavor of seven surgeries across two cities in less than 40 hours, on four terminally ill end stage patients in October, 2014. The patients have since recovered. This was announced at a Press Conference by Dr. Hari Prasad, CEO – Central Region, Apollo Hospitals and Dr. Manish C Varma, Liver Transplant Surgeon, Apollo Health City, on Thursday. The patients, 44 years old Ketan Ramesh Patel from Gujarat; USA based 47 year old Mahendra Kumar Kar, though originally from Orissa and Dynandev Warule, 52 year old from Maharashtra were critically ill and were desperately awaiting liver transplants, the first two had cadaver livers’ transplanted, while Dynandev Warule got liver from his son. They placed their utmost trust in the highly experienced Liver transplant team at Apollo Health City, Hyderabad, led by Dr Varma, which clocked an overall success rate of 97% for all liver transplants and 100% for Living Donor liver transplantations, a feat not many hospitals in the world can match.Ketan Ramesh Patel was critically ill for over six months when he came to us, requiring repeated admissions to the hospital. In the interim period he also developed a bout of serious blood stream infection with fungus, requiring the multispecialty expertise of the hospital to get him rid of it. He was also considering undergoing a blood group mismatched transplant from a part liver to be donated by his wife as a desperate measure to save his life. He was lucky to receive an organ from a brain dead person just in the nick of time.Mahendra Kumar Kar was diagnosed with jaundice and end stage liver disease about 4 months back and was advised to undergo liver transplantation in USA. However, he preferred to get it done in India and at Apollo Health City, Hyderabad, after weighing various options. He was fortunate to get a liver from a brain dead patient in Vizag, with the coordination of Jeevandan. Retrieving the liver from the brain dead donor and transporting it by a commercial flight was a medical and logistical challenge for the team, requiring minute planning, precise timing and an experienced team of coordinators to carry out the endeavour to a successful conclusion.Dnyandev Warule, a farmer from Maharashtra, was diagnosed with Liver disease when he got hospitalized with infection about 6 months back. His bad liver also started to affect his kidneys and repeated infections and hospital admissions prompted his engineer son, Suresh Warule, to donate a part of his liver to his father. The kidney transplant was performed on 43 year old software engineer, Kareemullah Khan, suffering from long standing renal failure. He is a known patient of diabetes and hypertension for the past eight years and was on dialysis for the last three years. He is now off dialysis and will join work and lead a normal life in two months time. Apollo Health City, Hyderabad on an average does 100 kidney transplants a year with a success rate of more than 95%.The team of specialists involved in the marathon liver transplant surgeries included Dr. Anand Khakhar; Dr. Manish Varma; Dr. Anand Ramamurthy; Dr. Mahesh Gopasetty; Dr. K. Rajasekhar; Dr. Sanath Reddy; Dr. Dinesh Babu; Dr. Bipin Vibhute, Dr. Vasanth Roopan and Dr. Rajeev Sinha. The team of Dr. Somasekhar, Consultant Nephrologist; Dr. Subramanyam, Consultant Urologist and Dr. Sanath Reddy, Consultant Anaesthetist, performed the Kidney Transplant. Mr. Girish Shetty and Mr. Sandeep were the Transplant coordinators.Speaking on the occasion Dr Hari Prasad said, a commendable effort of this magnitude is rare in the annals of medical history and the Liver transplant team led by Dr Manish Varma at the Apollo Health city, deserves kudos. The organ transplant team has been incessantly working towards our Chairman, Dr. Prathap Reddy’s dream of reaching out to the suffering end stage patients, providing succor through organ transplants and making a difference to their lives. A patient from USA preferring to get treated by this team despite the option of getting the best medical help back there, speaks volumes about the team’s expertise and is a true testimony to their professional ability, says Dr Prasad.According to Dr. Manish Varma, Liver transplantation is one of the most complex and demanding organ transplantations, performing three such transplants involving six surgeries across two cities in less than two days time is nothing short of a miracle, but a combination of highly experienced liver transplant specialists, world-class infrastructure and professional support team at the Apollo Health City, made this possible. The stupendous outcomes of the liver transplant program at the hospital is in itself a benchmark unreplicable for most reputed institutions in the world, he added.Apollo Hospitals Group is the flag-bearer in liver transplantation in the country. It has the largest liver transplant programme in this part of the world. The Centre for Liver Disease and Transplantation at Apollo Health City, Hyderabad is the fastest growing liver transplant program with results on par with the best liver centers in the world. Secretary, PGWA; Mr Vishwanath Agarwal, Joint Secretary, PGWA; Mr Pramod Kumar Kedia, Vice President, PGWA and Mr B.L. Pershad Jaiswal, Treasurer, PGWA.Speaking to the audience, Dr. Manish Varma said, Liver is a vital organ in the human body made of over 300 billion specialized cells. It performs complex functions which are essential to human life. The liver is a unique organ in the sense that it has a large reserve and has the capacity to regenerate and repair itself. However, in the face of ongoing injury, the liver may suffer damage which is irreversible and irreparable.Liver injury manifests itself as hepatitis which can manifest as jaundice, fever, loss of appetite, swelling in the abdomen and legs, among other manifestations. The most common causes of hepatitis are Alcohol (alcoholic hepatitis), Viral infections (viral hepatitis), and obesity (Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis- NASH). Fortunately, all of these are preventable.Once liver injury progresses beyond a certain extent, it results in a condition called liver cirrhosis, which is irreversible and, hence, called End Stage Liver Disease. Liver Cirrhosis is a progressive disease leading to a very poor quality of life, and cannot be managed with medicines beyond a certain stage. The only way to cure cirrhosis is by changing the diseased liver by Liver Transplantation which can be performed with success rates of more than 90-95%. Without liver transplantation, the outlook for patients with cirrhosis is very poor with almost no hope for long term survival. The steps to prevent End stage liver disease are simple and requires life style modifications and vaccinations against hepatitis viruses. The medical community can contribute by following safe blood bank and hospital practices.End Stage Liver Disease results in a very poor quality of Life and the cure requires major medical interventions. The measures required to prevent this are simple. Hence, it is important that we as a community realize that in the matters of the liver: Prevention is Better than Cure, and take the necessary steps in this direction.

Apollo Revolutionizes Prostate Cancer Screening for Indian Men with Groundbreaking Study
Apollo Hospital’s Pioneering Research Redefines Prostate Cancer Screening Standards for Indian MenUnveils New Reference Values in the Largest Study of its Kind conducted with close to 1 lakh men with no prior disposition to the diseaseNational, 12 January 2024: In a monumental stride towards advancing prostate cancer care in India, Apollo Hospitals, the world’s largest integrated healthcare provider, has unveiled groundbreaking findings in its latest study, ‘Determining age‑specific prostate‑specific antigen for healthy Indian men’ published the prestigious Indian Journal of Urology. Led by Dr. N Ragavan and Dr. Sanjai Addla, from Apollo Chennai and Apollo Hyderabad, respectively, the study involved nearly 100,000 healthy men across diverse age groups and regions in Indi a, establishing new reference values for prostate-specific antigen (PSA) specific to the Indian demographic.PSA is an established blood marker for early diagnosis and monitoring of treatment for prostate cancer. Since 1993, international norms for normal PSA values have been based on a study from the USA and the same have been adopted in India. The western standards quiet often were found to be ill-suited for the Indian population over to diverse genetic demarcations. This latest groundbreaking Apollo study reveals that PSA values in India differ, prompting the establishment of new, tailored standards. Key findings include age-specific PSA standards, a progressive increase in PSA levels with age, and Indian-specific PSA values facilitating earlier detection in younger men. With this, Apollo hospitals, clinics and diagnostics network will move towards the adoption of these new PSA standards for Prostate Screening.Dr Sangita Reddy, Joint Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals said, “This landmark study ushers a transformative moment in India’s prostate cancer care landscape, which resonates with our mission to conquer cancer, at every touchpoint possible. Establishing new prostate cancer screening standards for Indian men across ages in a landmark study reflects our commitment to pioneering advancements that redefine cancer care. With divergent PSA standards for different age groups, a progressive increase in levels with age, and Indian-specific values, we are transforming the landscape of prostate cancer care. This monumental shift not only facilitates earlier detection in younger men but also prevents unnecessary investigations in older individuals. By adopting these tailored standards, Apollo Hospitals reaffirms its commitment to patient-centric care and sets the stage for a new paradigm in healthcare innovation.”Prof Sanjai Addla, Consultant Uro-oncologist, Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad: “Our study, the largest in India, re-evaluates the age-specific PSA reference ranges tailored for the Indian population. Having data from 1lakh healthy men, we are confident to bridge the gap and enhance the accuracy of serum PSA testing in detecting prostate cancer among Indian men, improving its efficacy as a diagnostic marker and provides hope of treatment for those in the advanced stages also. As the incidence of prostate cancer rises in India, our study sought to address the limited data on age-specific PSA levels in our population. The observed link between serum PSA levels and age among Indian men contrasts with established standards for Caucasian n. This study offers a significant opportunity to redefine age-specific PSA reference ranges for Indian men, enabling more precise clinical decision-making and enhancing our ability to combat prostate cancer effectively.”Key findings from the Apollo study published in the Indian Journal of Urology of PSA values in 100,000 healthy men who visited Apollo Hospitals (during 2011-2018) for Indian population norms:Established divergent PSA standards for different age groups, contrasting with prior global norms.Revealed a progressive increase in PSA levels with age: <1.4 ng/mL (<40) to 11.3 ng/mL (>80).New Indian-specific PSA values aid earlier prostate cancer detection in younger men with lower PSA levels.Prevents unnecessary investigations in older men; new reference range for patients in their 70s and 80s is notably higher.Sets the foundation for tailored investigation and treatment in Indian men based onPSA values.Committed to patient-centric innovations, Apollo has acquired the latest bk5000 Ultrasound system. This allows us to deliver an integrated state-of-the-art diagnostic for prostate cancer detection, implementing the latest procedure known as Trans-Perineal Real Time Fusion (TP RTF) prostate biopsy. This approach avoids the contaminated transrectal (back passage) route minimizing the need for hospital admissions, bring down the risk of infection and sepsis to almost nil, and ensures a safer and more streamlined biopsy experience for Apollo patients.Apollo Hospitals in Hyderabad has already changed the reference values in line with the newly published data. Over the next quarter we will see a phased adoption of these new benchmarking across Apollo Hospitals in the southern region, followed by the rest of the hospitals, clinics and diagnostic center in the Apollo ecosystem.Additionally, in collaboration with society of Genitourinary Oncologists (SOGO) Apollo is working towards publishing a position paper to highlight the new reference PSA values for Healthy Indian men; making this a industry validation for other healthcare providers to adopt these Indian benchmarks.About Apollo:Apollo revolutionized healthcare when Dr Prathap Reddy opened the first hospital in Chennai in 1983.
