Hip Replacement
The hip joint is one of the largest weight-bearing joints in the human body. Most of the activities like walking, jumping, sitting, squatting, dancing, swimming, climbing, etc. depend on your hip as it provides necessary mobility and stability. But once it gets damaged, the hip becomes stiff and you limp painfully when you walk and every step needs considerable effort. You may be forced to restrict your activities or even be unable to walk. It is only then that you come to realize how much freedom of movement really means to you.
Fracture of the hip joint is common in the elderly due to their fragile bones. The fracture fixation surgery is common in such cases but a failed Hip fracture surgery is challenging, especially Total Hip Replacement. However, when performed by a trained Orthopaedic surgeon, the outcomes of such surgeries are optimal.
Touching Lives:
80 year-old-woman, was bedridden due to failed hip fracture fixation. She presented at Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai with left side hip fracture (Intertrochanteric femur fracture).
She had a fall 6 months back and was operated locally. The fracture was fixed with plate and screws. The surgery wasn’t successful and the bones didn’t join. She could not walk or put weight on her left leg. Even her left leg became short by around 2 inches and left hip movements became very painful. She was admitted to Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai.
Post investigation & evaluation of X-Rays, she was diagnosed with non-union of left side hip fracture with previous implant screw eroding her hip socket. She underwent Total Hip Replacement. The old plate and screws were removed and bony reconstruction was performed.
She started walking with her full weight on the left leg, which she wasn’t able to do post her previous surgery.
