Apollo Foundation and Billion Hearts Beating Expand Smart Ambulance Emergency Care

Apollo Foundation, in collaboration with the Billion Hearts Beating Foundation (BHB), has strengthened pre-hospital emergency care with the deployment of seven Smart Ambulances across Bengaluru, New Delhi and Navi Mumbai. Operated by Apollo Hospitals and supported by Marsh McLennan as part of its CSR initiative, the programme marks a significant step towards delivering timely, technology-enabled critical care at the community level.  Designed as mobile intensive care units, the Smart Ambulances bring advanced, connected emergency care closer to patients, ensuring that treatment begins the moment help arrives — not when hospital doors open. Each ambulance is equipped with advanced life-support systems including cardiac monitors, ventilators and defibrillators, along with digital clinical tools that support faster, more accurate decision-making during transit.  A key feature of the Smart Ambulance programme is real-time audio-visual connectivity, enabling Apollo Hospitals’ doctors to be virtually present inside the ambulance. This allows physicians to guide trained paramedics as care is initiated en route, ensuring seamless coordination with hospital emergency teams. Live GPS tracking further keeps hospitals and families informed, allowing emergency departments to prepare in advance for incoming patients and ensuring continuity of care from first response to definitive treatment. These state-of-the-art ambulances were formally unveiled in the presence of leadership from Apollo Foundation, Apollo Hospitals, Billion Hearts Beating Foundation and Marsh McLennan, reinforcing the need to strengthen emergency response capabilities in rapidly growing urban regions. In Bengaluru, the ambulances have already been deployed at community health camps, benefiting over 23,000 people by bringing advanced medical support closer to underserved populations. The initiative was launched in partnership with Marsh McLennan and inaugurated in the presence of Mr. Sanjay Kedia, CEO, Marsh McLennan & President, Marsh India, reinforcing a shared vision to reimagine emergency care through speed, technology and compassion. Together, Apollo Foundation, Billion Hearts Beating Foundation and Apollo Hospitals aim to build a responsive, community-centric emergency healthcare ecosystem that delivers critical care beyond hospital boundaries, when every second truly matters.

Apollo Chennai Achieves Breakthrough in Complex Coronary Care with Advanced CHIP & ELCA Laser Techniques

Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, has set a new standard in complex cardiac care by successfully treating two high-risk coronary cases. Leveraging the advanced CHIP (Complex High-Risk Indicated Procedure) technique and ELCA (Excimer Laser Coronary Angioplasty), the institution reaffirms its leadership in addressing complex coronary blockages with precision, innovation, and patient-centric expertise.   The team reopened a completely occluded 12-year-old stent using laser angioplasty, restoring blood flow in a challenging, long-standing blockage. In the second case, a 15-year-old stent with severe restenosis and an ejection fraction of just 30 percent required a tailored, high-risk intervention. Supported by IABP (Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump) and ELCA laser therapy, the team successfully cleared the blockage and placed a new-generation stent. Both patients made excellent recoveries and were discharged within 48 hours.  These procedures were led by Dr. Refai Showkathali, Senior Consultant and Interventional Cardiologist at Apollo Hospitals, Greams Road, Chennai, along with the skilled Cath Lab team. Apollo Hospitals also expressed appreciation for the expert insights contributed by Dr. Jaswindar Singh from Washington during the interventions. With each such breakthrough, Apollo Chennai continues to enhance outcomes for patients with complex coronary disease, setting new benchmarks in advanced interventional cardiology.

Resorbable screws used for the first time in India at Apollo Hospitals Chennai to correct congenital spine problem of a six-year-old child from Tanzania Six-year-old Maureen Richard Shirima will now be able to run and jump, like other students in her class in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Senior Consultant and Spine Surgeon, Apollo Hospitals Chennai, Dr. Sajan K. Hegde said that a bone graft was taken from the child and used to set the fractured bone and resorbable screws helped to keep the bones in place. He said resorbable screws were in use for sometime now across the world but this was the first time it was being used in India to correct such rare problems of the lower spine. Six-year-old Maureen Richard Shirima will now be able to run and jump, like other students in her class in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Clutching a yellow teddy bear, she recalled “Sometimes when I came back to class [after playing] I would be sick.” It would hurt “when I jump, when I run.” Until a month ago the child suffered excruciating back pain, caused by a congenital anomaly of the lower spine and the spinal cord. Maureen’s problem was that she had a low-lying spinal cord which was tethered to a benign tumour. A lower vertebra had broken causing back ache. Apollo Hospital senior consultant and spine surgeon Sajan K. Hegde said here on Tuesday that a bone graft was taken from the child and used to set the fractured bone and resorbable screws helped to keep the bones in place. He said resorbable screws were in use for sometime now across the world but this was the first time it was being used in India to correct such rare problems of the lower spine. Normally, metal implants and screws are used to set bones and another surgery is required to remove them once the bones set. In patients where the implants were not removed, the possibility of going for an MRI scan, if needed, was ruled out. Dr. Hegde said resorbable screws, now widely used for setting bones in other parts of the body, was chosen considering the patient’s age. The child was a beneficiary of collaboration between the Tanzanian Health Ministry and hospitals in India. The cost of her surgery was borne by the Tanzanian government, said a representative of the Tanzanian High Commission.

“Apollo Knee Clinic” will be the first of it’s kind program in this part of the world. Research, inputs from experts in orthopedics and rehab medicine and experience of the entire team at Apollo Hospitals has provided the material required for this program. Where ever possible the protocols and guidelines have been benchmarked with global institutions to ensure that the product is comparable to the best institutions in the world.   Disease profile is undergoing an amazing transformation and infectious diseases are fast giving way to life style diseases. Hypertension, Diabetes, Obesity and Stress are major predisposing factors for disease today and the disease burden due to coronary artery disease, stroke, cancer and degenerative diseases is increasing. In addition to the predisposing factors mentioned above factors such as aspiration for a longer and more active life, increasing life expectancy and injuries are leading to an increased incidence of hospital visits due to knee pain. Over 4 million people above 60 years and over 6 million people across all age groups need help for knee disorders. Knee pain is one of the commonest problems that many people face in their day to day life and most common cause of chronic knee pain are Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and injury. While a variety of options are available today both in traditional and alternative medicine for management of knee pain, most of these options are incomplete and sub-optimal. Patients move from hospital to hospital and from doctor to doctor in search of pain relief often without desired results. The need for a comprehensive KNEE PAIN MANAGEMENT CENTER was obvious and articulated by many patients. While the need is clearly established and the potential clearly described there is no solution leveraging this need and potential. Therefore Apollo Hospitals has decided to create a comprehensive solution for knee pain integrating the different elements of managing a knee disorder. It will provide a 360 degree approach to our patients, right from prevention to treatment and rehabilitation.”” The units now have a dedicated operation theatre and physiotherapy department for post operative rehabilitation and manned by a dedicated team of professionals exclusively trained to deal with such patients.
