India’s Most Comprehensive Heart and Lung Transplant Program Gives Critically Ill Patients a Second Chance at Life

Over 600 heart and lung transplants and 1,000 ECMO cases mark a major national milestone in advanced critical careConsistent, high-survival outcomes position Apollo Hospitals, Chennai as India’s leader in advanced heart and lung failure management Chennai, 22 January 2026: Apollo Hospitals, Chennai continues to set national benchmarks in the treatment of advanced heart and lung disease, driven by one of India’s most comprehensive heart, lung, and ECMO-supported transplant programs. The transplant team, with significant national and international experience, have performed 600+ heart and lung transplants, managed over 2,000 transplant patients, 1,000+ Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) cases, along with 250+ Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVAD) procedures and 250+ Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH) interventions. The multidisciplinary heart-lung transplant and MCS program at Apollo expertly manages patients with end-stage heart and or lung failure, offering personalised solutions for those who no longer respond to maximal medical therapy. Be it a stabilising, bridging or definitive treatment with transplanting   hearts and lungs, or implanting durable mechanical cardiac pumps for failing hearts, our patients are supported through a continuum of focused and evidence-based care.  The team also offers comprehensive solutions for even the most complex cardiopulmonary conditions, such as the gold standard treatment of Pulmonary Endarterectomy (PEA) for appropriate patients with CTEPH, where the chronic blood clots in the lung arteries are removed surgically. The press conference held to mark this milestone featured patients from different age groups and levels of illness severity, who shared how their lives were transformed by the program. Among them were Mr. Raja Sivagurunathan (59), who survived a critical phase on ECMO support for 48 days before undergoing an emergency double-lung transplant; Mr. B. Saravanan (45), who developed sudden and severe lung failure and was supported on life-saving machines for two weeks until a successful lung transplant; and Mr. Radhae Shyam Raghuvanshi (72), whose condition worsened abruptly and who was airlifted to Chennai before receiving a double-lung transplant after advanced support.   Commenting about ECMO and Transplantation, Dr. Srinivas Rajagopala, Senior Consultant & Clinical Lead - Pulmonology, Sleep Medicine and Lung Transplant, Apollo Hospitals Chennai said, “These outcomes demonstrate how early and appropriate use of ECMO can fundamentally alter the course of severe lung failure. It provides a vital bridge allowing time for stabilisation, informed decision-making, and preparation for lung transplantation. Success lies in constant vigilance, multidisciplinary teamwork, and highly personalized care. Our goal is always meaningful recovery, not merely short-term survival.” Dr. R Ravi Kumar, the Clinical Lead for Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiology, Apollo Hospitals Chennai, described how Apollo Hospitals was achieving superior outcomes for the sickest patients with end-stage heart failure. “The team at Apollo Hospitals, with its evolving national program, is already delivering a unique clinical service that is succeeding in reducing both time to transplant and mortality on the waitlist.  We hope to repeat this at other Apollo Hospitals facilities beyond Chennai and Bangalore”. Dr. Kumud Kumar Dhital, Head of Heart and Lung Transplantation at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, emphasized “Patients suffering from advancing heart and lung failure, with escalating medical therapy and declining quality of life, deserve to be informed of the transplant options at a far earlier stage.  Outcomes improve significantly when patients are referred early and managed with strong, protocol-driven hospital care. Age itself is not a limitation - what matters is careful evaluation, optimization, meticulous surgery, expert after-care in the ICU, and life-long post-discharge continuity of care so as to maximize chances of long-term survivorship.” Dr. IIankumaran Kaliamoorthy, CEO – Chennai Region, Apollo Hospitals also participated in the press conference. As India’s burden of advanced heart and lung disease continues to rise, Apollo Hospitals remains at the forefront of comprehensive cardiothoracic transplantation, combining innovation, expertise, and compassionate care- proving that even the most critical organ failure can be transformed into a second chance at life. Apollo Hospitals delivers 360-degree care through an integrated, multidisciplinary model involving cardiology, pulmonology, cardiothoracic surgery, anaesthesia, critical care, transplant coordination, rehabilitation, and seamlessly coordinates this with post-discharge and long-term follow-up. The program’s focus extends beyond survival to restoring functional independence and quality of life for patients while fully informing and supporting their families. ECMO serves as a vital life-support technology within this ecosystem. This mechanical support temporarily takes over the function of the heart and/or lungs when conventional therapies fail. By oxygenating blood outside the body, ECMO allows failing organs to rest and recover or acts as a crucial bridge to recovery or transplantation. The program integrates VV-ECMO for lung support, VA-ECMO for cardiac and combined heart-lung failure. LVADs in the form of implantable and mechanical heart pumps are offered to suitable candidates as durable alternatives or bridge to heart transplantation.

Apollo Foundation and Billion Hearts Beating Expand Smart Ambulance Emergency Care

Apollo Foundation, in collaboration with the Billion Hearts Beating Foundation (BHB), has strengthened pre-hospital emergency care with the deployment of seven Smart Ambulances across Bengaluru, New Delhi and Navi Mumbai. Operated by Apollo Hospitals and supported by Marsh McLennan as part of its CSR initiative, the programme marks a significant step towards delivering timely, technology-enabled critical care at the community level.  Designed as mobile intensive care units, the Smart Ambulances bring advanced, connected emergency care closer to patients, ensuring that treatment begins the moment help arrives — not when hospital doors open. Each ambulance is equipped with advanced life-support systems including cardiac monitors, ventilators and defibrillators, along with digital clinical tools that support faster, more accurate decision-making during transit.  A key feature of the Smart Ambulance programme is real-time audio-visual connectivity, enabling Apollo Hospitals’ doctors to be virtually present inside the ambulance. This allows physicians to guide trained paramedics as care is initiated en route, ensuring seamless coordination with hospital emergency teams. Live GPS tracking further keeps hospitals and families informed, allowing emergency departments to prepare in advance for incoming patients and ensuring continuity of care from first response to definitive treatment. These state-of-the-art ambulances were formally unveiled in the presence of leadership from Apollo Foundation, Apollo Hospitals, Billion Hearts Beating Foundation and Marsh McLennan, reinforcing the need to strengthen emergency response capabilities in rapidly growing urban regions. In Bengaluru, the ambulances have already been deployed at community health camps, benefiting over 23,000 people by bringing advanced medical support closer to underserved populations. The initiative was launched in partnership with Marsh McLennan and inaugurated in the presence of Mr. Sanjay Kedia, CEO, Marsh McLennan & President, Marsh India, reinforcing a shared vision to reimagine emergency care through speed, technology and compassion. Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi initiates “SAVE” India Campaign and commences a Screening...
Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi initiates “”SAVE”” India Campaign and commences a Screening Programme for Stroke, Aneurysm and Vascular disease Evaluation India’s first comprehensive Vascular screening programme – “”SAVE”” India will be launched by Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals very soon and as a buildup to the launch, the Hospital is starting a low cost screening programme commemorating the ’National Vascular Week’ commencing today. India’s first comprehensive Vascular screening programme – “”SAVE”” India will be launched by Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals very soon and as a buildup to the launch, the Hospital is starting a low cost screening programme commemorating the ’National Vascular Week’ commencing today. Facts: A) Aortic Aneurysm: More than 15,000 people die due to this each year and nearly 2,00,000 people are diagnosed with Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) annually It is estimated that more than one million people are living with undiagnosed AAA and at least 95 percent of these can be successfully treated if detected prior to rupture. B) Carotid Artery Disease (Stroke): Stroke remains the third leading cause of death with nearly 1, 57,000 people dying annually A large proportion of strokes are caused by plaque in the carotid arteries C) Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD): One in every 20 Indians over the age of 50 has PAD and it is estimated to affect more than 9 million people in India Individuals with PAD suffer a five-fold increased relative risk of a cardiovascular ischemic event and total mortality that is two to three fold greater than those without PAD “”SAVE”” India Campaign comprises Stroke, Aneurysm and Vascular disease Evaluation to prevent disability or death due to stroke, aneurysm rupture or leg ulcers or gangrene. Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals offers a one-time Vascular Surgeon Consultation plus Ultrasound Screening examination of Carotid arteries, Abdominal blood vessels and lower limb arteries for qualified seniors as a part of this the screening begins from August 6, 2010 till December 31, 2010. This screening will save over 50% cost to the patients suffering or high risk from peripheral vascular diseases. High risk groups who will benefit from this screening programme are persons above the age of 50, having diabetes, hypertension, ulcers in legs or gangrene, smokers and patients who have heart disease or stroke. Peripheral vascular disease harms blood flow in arteries throughout our body. As we age, our arteries tend to thicken, get stiff, and narrow because of a build-up of plaque consisting of fat and cholesterol. When this occurs in large and medium-sized arteries, it is called atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). When the narrowing happens in arteries leading to the heart, it can cause a heart attack, when it occurs in neck arteries it causes Stroke (Brain Attack) and when it blocks leg arteries, it causes leg pain or gangrene or ulcers (Leg Attack) especially in patients with Diabetes. Aortic Aneurysms are a swelling or ballooning of the aorta wall where it has been thinned and weakened from atherosclerosis. If untreated, an aneurysm will eventually rupture, which is usually fatal. The SAVE campaign has been launched with an initiative to increase awareness regarding vascular diseases in the country. For the first time in India, it aims at widespread population based screening of vascular ailments throughout the nation to achieve early detection of the disease as well as early intervention to prevent the disastrous consequences of Vascular diseases. Expressing concern over growing vascular diseases, Dr. Prof. Ramesh Tripathi, Academic Coordinator and Senior Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital said, “”this innovative and cost-effective screening programme will ultimately help our patients know and prevent many complications thereby avoiding surgery or interventions before the disease is end-stage. It will also show us whether Indian peripheral vascular disease is similar to or different from what we see in the western world, giving us insights into local requirements and treatment modifications needed for Indian patients””. “”Although Vascular Screening is very big and well established in USA, UK and Australia/New Zealand, it has so far failed to take off in India. In USA, there is legislation making screening for Aortic Aneurysms mandatory for high-risk patients. Although in India, we are far from a legislation for screening to prevent Peripheral vascular disease, SAVE India Campaign is an initial step in the right direction””, says Dr. Prof. Ramesh Tripathi. He added “” With the explosion of Diabetes in India, WHO has estimated that by 2011, India will be the Diabetes Capital of the world with the largest number of patients globally. SAVE Campaign has been launched, with an eye on future challenges of increase in cases of Vascular diseases in the country. Patients should see Vascular surgeons, who are the only physicians treating vascular disease today providing all the treatment options available (including Surgical and Endovascular) with a most balanced perspective””. Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi has taken a first initiative for low cost screening of Stroke, Aneurysm and Vascular disease Evaluation with the slogan – SAVE LIMBS, SAVE LIVES, SAVE INDIA! The screening that was earlier costing Rs. 14,000 is now being offered at Rs. 5,000.

First American Gets A Successful Heart Transplant At Apollo Hospitals, Chennai !
First American Gets A Successful Heart Transplant At Apollo Hospitals, Chennai ! Doctors in the US had given Ronald Lemmer, 65, only a year to live and had scoffed at his idea of going to India for a heart transplant. They told him he would return in a coffin. Today, after a successful heart transplant at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, Lemmer is smiling. So is India ’s medical fraternity. Lemmer was transplanted with the heart of a 36-year-old accident victim in an eight-hour surgery by Dr Paul Ramesh at Apollo Hospitals Chennai . In the process, two records were also created. The patient was not only the first U.S. citizen to undergo a heart transplant in India, but he was also the oldest person to undergo a heart transplant in the country. “I decided to come to India for the transplant after some research on the internet,” said Lemmer. His wife Shelly, visibly emotional, said, ” My husband is a walking miracle. He looks at least 15 years younger. Earlier his heart was functioning at 20% of its capacity. Now it has gone up to 60%.” After coming to Chennai in May this year, it was an excruciating wait of three months for the couple before Lemmer found a suitable donor. “He was very lucky as the donor ’s heart did not match with any Indians on the waiting list and hence we selected him,” said Dr Prathap C Reddy, chairman of Apollo Hospitals. It may be recalled that Dr Prathap C Reddy started Apollo Hospitals in 1983 after a patient of his died because he couldn ’t reach US in time for treatment. Now with the first patient from the US getting a heart transplant in India, we have come full circle.

Apollo Hospitals and CISCO to bridge the Health Divide – ICT solutions to transform healthcare in suburb...
Apollo Hospitals, along with CISCO, the globally renowned networking and telecommunication provider, announced an alliance to help revolutionize healthcare through Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This joint venture will drive inclusive growth and accelerate access to affordable and high quality healthcare via CISCO’s ‘Desktop Solution’ technology. DATE : MAY 07, 2010 Apollo Hospitals, along with CISCO, the globally renowned networking and telecommunication provider, announced an alliance to help revolutionize healthcare through Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This joint venture will drive inclusive growth and accelerate access to affordable and high quality healthcare via CISCO’s ‘Desktop Solution’ technology. Speaking about the association, Ms Sangita Reddy, Executive Director – Apollo Hospitals Group, said: “At Apollo Hospitals, we constantly endeavour to introduce new models to help in making quality healthcare accessible to the masses. The alliance with CISCO will revolutionize the delivery of healthcare in India. The CISCO ‘Desktop Solution’ represents significant advances in technology and telecommunication techniques, effectively delivering healthcare 24×7 remotely.” Healthcare providers face many challenges in the delivery of healthcare services, particularly to suburban and rural areas. During the last decade, Apollo Telemedicine Networking Foundation – the largest and oldest multi-specialty telemedicine network – has handled some of these issues in an organized, cost-efficient manner. When integrated with Apollo Hospital’s ‘Medintegra’, for the first time CISCO’s ‘Desktop Solution’ will make available a user-friendly, cost-effective telemedicine solution at a significantly reduced initial investment at the remote end. Telemedicine can now be universally available. Doctors with this technology do not need to visit a telemedicine room to connect with patients and can now interact with patients on a laptop supported with an Internet connection. A detailed “clinical examination” and review of all investigations is possible in a seamless manner with the option of recording the entire interaction. Apollo and CISCO aim to collaboratively create smart connected healthcare communities by using cutting-edge technology in healthcare. As a first step, Apollo Hospitals Group and Apollo Telemedicine Foundation will be deploying 60 such ‘Desktop Solutions’, thereby enabling a patient to access any doctor, any time across the Apollo system. Professor K. Ganapathy, President of Apollo Telemedicine Networking Foundation and President-elect of the Telemedicine Society of India observed that this solution would help telemedicine in India reach the critical mass essential for a successful take-off. “We are looking beyond India in deploying this technology. ‘Doctor anyone, anytime, anywhere’ will be our slogan,” Prof. Ganapathy remarked. Commenting on the relationship, Wim Elfrink, Chief Globalisation Officer and Executive Vice President, Cisco Services, said: “We are excited to collaborate closely with Apollo Hospitals to create and showcase various healthcare solutions. Information and Communications Technologies play a vital role in improving access to, and providing an affordable and quality healthcare system especially to tier 1 and tier 2 communities. Backed by Apollo’s expertise, I am confident we can transform how doctors practice medicine and how patients experience care – no matter where they are.” Vishal Gupta, Vice President, CISCO said: “We are certain that with Apollo’s feedback, the product will be refined further to suit specific needs worldwide.” CISCO Health Presence extended reach solution helps connect patients with medical providers conveniently and efficiently, regardless of distance. Using the network as a platform for telemedicine, it creates an environment similar to what patients experience when they visit their medical provider. It combines high-definition video and audio, end-to-end telemedicine workflow, and remote medical diagnostics to create an affordable, innovative and scalable solution.

In less than two years since inception, the team at the Apollo Centre for Liver Disease and Transplantation completed 50 Liver Transplantations, marking a noteworthy first-of-its-kind milestone in the city of Chennai. DATE : APRIL 15, 2010 In less than two years since inception, the team at the Apollo Centre for Liver Disease and Transplantation completed 50 Liver Transplantations, marking a noteworthy first-of-its-kind milestone in the city of Chennai. Dr. Anand Khakhar, Senior Consultant Liver Transplant & Hepatobiliary Surgery and Program Director for the Liver Transplant Program at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai and his highly skilled team have changed the face of liver transplantation in southern India. Addressing the media, Padma Vibhushan Dr. Prathap C Reddy, Chairman, Apollo Hospitals Group said, “With over 400 Liver Transplants performed with a success rate of over 90%, Apollo Hospitals has the leading Liver Transplantation Program in India. We now have established programs at Apollo Chennai and Delhi. Similar transplant programs are being initiated in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahemdabad and Kolkata and they will be managed by our established programs as hubs. Elaborating on the Organ Transplant Program, Dr. Prathap Reddy added, “A first-of-its-kind Comprehensive Organ Transplant program at Chennai is being established to provide pancreas transplantation, multi-visceral transplantation, islet cell transplantation and a specialized centre dedicated for paediatric organ transplantation. A tie-up up has been established with the University of Pittsburgh, USA for knowledge & information sharing. A commendable aspect is that the Apollo Hospitals Chennai has the biggest cadaver program for liver in India. Addressing the media, Dr. Anand Khakhar, said, “Awareness of liver ailments is extremely low. In Chennai itself, there would be an estimated 25,000 people in need of Liver Transplants and they would be unaware of the same. The Apollo Liver Transplant Program at Chennai is a complete transplant program with facilities and abilities to undertake cadaveric whole organ, cadaveric split liver as well as living related liver transplants for all age groups from small children to elderly individuals. We have demonstrated successful liver transplants which have been performed under planned and urgent conditions, yet the outcomes have always matched global benchmarks. Liver failure is a potentially fatal condition in which the liver progressively stops performing its function resulting in episodes of jaundice, accumulation of fluid in the body, blood vomiting and confusion. Conditions such as Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C infection, excess alcohol consumption, diseases such as Primary Biliary Cirrhosis and Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis can cause this state. Elaborating on the Apollo Liver Clinics, Dr. Anand Ramamurthy, Consultant, Centre for Liver Disease and Transplantation at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai said, “The Apollo Liver Clinics offer a 360 degree approach to managing all Liver ailments which is the Apollo Advantage. Through the ‘Apollo Liver Clinics’ we offer a one-stop solution for patients with liver diseases. The patients are simultaneously seen by the team of dedicated liver specialists involving hepatology, liver surgery, interventional radiology and various therapists to appropriately provide multidisciplinary care tailored to the cause and stage of the patients’ liver disease. Several new initiatives by the Tamil-Nadu State Government and Apollo Hospitals have helped increase the rate of cadaver organ donation. With increasing awareness that organ donation provides a new lease of life to a patient, the cadavers have been coming in from various districts of Tamil-Nadu.
