  • Heart and Lung Transplant Program Gives Critically Ill Patients a Second Chance at Life
    Press Releases

India’s most Comprehensive Heart and Lung Transplant Program gives critically ill patients a second chance at life

Over 600 heart and lung transplants and 1,000 ECMO cases mark a major national milestone in advanced critical careConsistent, high-survival outcomes position Apollo Hospitals, Chennai as India’s leader in advanced heart and lung failure management  Chennai, 22 January 2026: Apollo Hospitals, Chennai continues to set national benchmarks in the treatment of advanced heart and lung disease, driven by one of India’s most comprehensive heart, lung, and ECMO-supported transplant programs. The transplant team, with significant national and international experience, have performed 600+ heart and lung transplants, managed over 2,000 transplant patients, 1,000+ Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) cases, along with 250+ Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVAD) procedures and 250+ Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH) interventions. The multidisciplinary heart-lung transplant and MCS program at Apollo expertly manages patients with end-stage heart and or lung failure, offering personalised solutions for those who no longer respond to maximal medical therapy. Be it a stabilising, bridging or definitive treatment with transplanting   hearts and lungs, or implanting durable mechanical cardiac pumps for failing hearts, our patients are supported through a continuum of focused and evidence-based care. The team also offers comprehensive solutions for even the most complex cardiopulmonary conditions, such as the gold standard treatment of Pulmonary Endarterectomy (PEA) for appropriate patients with CTEPH, where the chronic blood clots in the lung arteries are removed surgically. The press conference held to mark this milestone featured patients from different age groups and levels of illness severity, who shared how their lives were transformed by the program. Among them were Mr. Raja Sivagurunathan (59), who survived a critical phase on ECMO support for 48 days before undergoing an emergency double-lung transplant; Mr. B. Saravanan (45), who developed sudden and severe lung failure and was supported on life-saving machines for two weeks until a successful lung transplant; and Mr. Radhae Shyam Raghuvanshi (72), whose condition worsened abruptly and who was airlifted to Chennai before receiving a double-lung transplant after advanced support.   Commenting about ECMO and Transplantation, Dr. Srinivas Rajagopala, Senior Consultant & Clinical Lead - Pulmonology, Sleep Medicine and Lung Transplant, Apollo Hospitals Chennai said, “These outcomes demonstrate how early and appropriate use of ECMO can fundamentally alter the course of severe lung failure. It provides a vital bridge allowing time for stabilisation, informed decision-making, and preparation for lung transplantation. Success lies in constant vigilance, multidisciplinary teamwork, and highly personalized care. Our goal is always meaningful recovery, not merely short-term survival.” Dr. R Ravi Kumar, the Clinical Lead for Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiology, Apollo Hospitals Chennai, described how Apollo Hospitals was achieving superior outcomes for the sickest patients with end-stage heart failure. “The team at Apollo Hospitals, with its evolving national program, is already delivering a unique clinical service that is succeeding in reducing both time to transplant and mortality on the waitlist.  We hope to repeat this at other Apollo Hospitals facilities beyond Chennai and Bangalore”. Dr. Kumud Kumar Dhital, Head of Heart and Lung Transplantation at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, emphasized “Patients suffering from advancing heart and lung failure, with escalating medical therapy and declining quality of life, deserve to be informed of the transplant options at a far earlier stage.  Outcomes improve significantly when patients are referred early and managed with strong, protocol-driven hospital care. Age itself is not a limitation - what matters is careful evaluation, optimization, meticulous surgery, expert after-care in the ICU, and life-long post-discharge continuity of care so as to maximize chances of long-term survivorship.” Dr. IIankumaran Kaliamoorthy, CEO – Chennai Region, Apollo Hospitals also participated in the press conference. As India’s burden of advanced heart and lung disease continues to rise, Apollo Hospitals remains at the forefront of comprehensive cardiothoracic transplantation, combining innovation, expertise, and compassionate care- proving that even the most critical organ failure can be transformed into a second chance at life. Apollo Hospitals delivers 360-degree care through an integrated, multidisciplinary model involving cardiology, pulmonology, cardiothoracic surgery, anaesthesia, critical care, transplant coordination, rehabilitation, and seamlessly coordinates this with post-discharge and long-term follow-up. The program’s focus extends beyond survival to restoring functional independence and quality of life for patients while fully informing and supporting their families. ECMO serves as a vital life-support technology within this ecosystem. This mechanical support temporarily takes over the function of the heart and/or lungs when conventional therapies fail. By oxygenating blood outside the body, ECMO allows failing organs to rest and recover or acts as a crucial bridge to recovery or transplantation. The program integrates VV-ECMO for lung support, VA-ECMO for cardiac and combined heart-lung failure. LVADs in the form of implantable and mechanical heart pumps are offered to suitable candidates as durable alternatives or bridge to heart transplantation.

Apollo Foundation and Billion Hearts Beating Expand Smart Ambulance Emergency Care

Apollo Foundation, in collaboration with the Billion Hearts Beating Foundation (BHB), has strengthened pre-hospital emergency care with the deployment of seven Smart Ambulances across Bengaluru, New Delhi and Navi Mumbai. Operated by Apollo Hospitals and supported by Marsh McLennan as part of its CSR initiative, the programme marks a significant step towards delivering timely, technology-enabled critical care at the community level.  Designed as mobile intensive care units, the Smart Ambulances bring advanced, connected emergency care closer to patients, ensuring that treatment begins the moment help arrives — not when hospital doors open. Each ambulance is equipped with advanced life-support systems including cardiac monitors, ventilators and defibrillators, along with digital clinical tools that support faster, more accurate decision-making during transit.  A key feature of the Smart Ambulance programme is real-time audio-visual connectivity, enabling Apollo Hospitals’ doctors to be virtually present inside the ambulance. This allows physicians to guide trained paramedics as care is initiated en route, ensuring seamless coordination with hospital emergency teams. Live GPS tracking further keeps hospitals and families informed, allowing emergency departments to prepare in advance for incoming patients and ensuring continuity of care from first response to definitive treatment. These state-of-the-art ambulances were formally unveiled in the presence of leadership from Apollo Foundation, Apollo Hospitals, Billion Hearts Beating Foundation and Marsh McLennan, reinforcing the need to strengthen emergency response capabilities in rapidly growing urban regions. In Bengaluru, the ambulances have already been deployed at community health camps, benefiting over 23,000 people by bringing advanced medical support closer to underserved populations. The initiative was launched in partnership with Marsh McLennan and inaugurated in the presence of Mr. Sanjay Kedia, CEO, Marsh McLennan & President, Marsh India, reinforcing a shared vision to reimagine emergency care through speed, technology and compassion. In yet another effort towards the vision of empowering people with credible and quality Healthcare information, Apollo Hospitals has worked with Google to add health information to Google’s Knowledge Graph in India. This new feature aims to give people access to health information quickly and easily. The health card is a highly standardized and reader friendly format of information that gets presented on the Google search engine. It aims to help consumers and people’s access and appreciate information quickly and easily. Henceforth, when a user asks Google about common health conditions, he/she will start getting relevant medical facts right up front and will be able to see typical symptoms, as well as details on how common the condition is—whether it’s critical, if it’s contagious, what ages it affects, and more. For some conditions, high-quality illustrations from licensed medical illustrators are also available. All the medical information that gets presented in the cards is reviewed and certified by the Specialists of Apollo Hospitals. The focus is to empower people with accurate, appropriate and easy to understand information so as to support them and provide a framework from which they can have a better conversation with their doctor or dive deeper on the web. Since the advent of internet, and access to a variety of health related information, consumers have been attempting to find answers and classifications to many of their health concerns from the internet. To empower today’s connected patient, consultants from Apollo Hospitals across locations have come together for this initiative and support it with their inputs to validate medical information on web on health concerns ranging from a diaper rash to a heart attack. Speaking on the launch, Ms Sangita Reddy, Joint Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Limited said, “Apollo Hospitals has always been committed to providing the digital dividend to all Indians. We are very proud to have associated with Google on this initiative. A team of specialists at Apollo Hospitals led by Dr Alla Gopala Krishna Gokhale, Senior Heart & Lung Transplant Surgeon, performed a Heart Transplantation successfully on a 36-year-old man suffering from terminal heart disease. This surgery was done on 26th of February, 2016 and the patient has since recovered and is getting discharged. The recipient, a software engineer by profession and resident of Hyderabad had to quit his job at Accenture a year back due to heart problem. He was diagnosed to be suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy for last four years, it worsened further for the past eight months and he was virtually confined to home. Vinay was treated by cardiologists for breathing difficulty and hospitalized three times in the last six months for control of heart failure. He was referred to Dr. Gokhale for the possibility of heart transplantation. When patient came to Apollo Hospitals on 18th January, 2016, he was very critical and needed admission in ICCU under the care of cardiologist Dr. Manoj Agarwal and Dr. Gokhale. He was stabilized and discharged after 10 days to let him join in the birthday celebrations of his one year old child. In the meantime, his name was registered with Jeevandan. His condition remained precarious and had to undergo regular follow ups, while waiting for a heart from a cadaver. On 25th of February, relations of a young brain dead patient agreed to donate organs at Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills. However, donor blood pressure was low and was put on large doses of medicines to maintain blood pressure and a heart like that is not conducive for transplant. However, intensivists at Apollo Hospitals worked extremely hard overnight to stabilize the heart condition and facilitate usage of the same to save the life of this heart failure patient. Vinay recovered well after transplant and was mobile within 48 hours. Heart transplantation is a rare operation done for end-stage heart failure. So far in India, only a little over 250 heart transplants are done. Unlike kidney and liver transplantations, awareness about heart transplantation is dismal and many a times donated hearts are going waste. After heart transplantation, most of these patients can lead normal life and carry on with their jobs.

A one-year-old child from Kenya underwent an unusual liver transplant at the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Delhi. A segment of the liver was donated by the child’s father. Paul was suffering from biliary atresia since birth, a condition in which the bile ducts (required to drain the bile from the liver to the intestine) were not developed. This is among the most common reasons for liver failure in infants. The condition can be treated if detected within two months of birth. However, in Paul’s case, the condition went undetected. The only option for him was a liver transplant. The procedure was conducted at the Centre for Liver and Biliary Surgery. Professor Anupam Sibal, Group medical director, said: “Paul’s case was high-risk because he was severely malnourished, was born with a complex anatomy and his liver failure was rapidly worsening. He needed an urgent transplant. We took on the challenge with such a small baby weighing only six kilograms and with several risk factors as that was his only hope. ”Professor Sibal added that the child had made a remarkable recovery and was discharged two weeks after the surgery. The operation took 12 hours and involved a medical team of 50 people. Dr. Subash Gupta, chief transplant surgeon at the Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, conducted the operation.

Apollo Cancer Hospitals, Chennai conducts Symposium on Women's Oncology.
A symposium on women’s Oncology at Apollo Cancer Hospitals, Chennai, had experts from the hospital, the National Cancer Institute, the U.S., and the Cancer Institute, Adyar, sharing their experiences. The symposium, aimed at educating people on newer treatments, vaccinations and screening processes, deliberated on prevention and management of cancers. Apollo Hospitals’ Executive Vice-Chairperson Dr. Preetha Reddy said, “Over six lakh people die of cancer every year in India and more than half of them are in the 30-70 age group. This symposium will provide opportunities for oncologists to interact with one another and exchange latest updates on cancer prevention and treatment.” Dr. Prathap C Reddy said the need of the hour was a collective movement from public and private organisations to increase awareness of proactive screening for NCDs. Adyar Cancer Institute chairperson V. Shanta said the lifetime cumulative risk of women aged below 75 years acquiring cancer in urban areas in India is one in seven to 10 whereas in developed countries it was one in three or four. She said nearly 60 per cent of patients seek treatment in advanced stages leading to increased mortality and poor survival. Dr. Shanta said a thrust on preventive measures with early detection, education and increasing awareness will reduce the number of cancer incidences.

Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata, offers new hope for patients with intractable Parkinson’s disease,...
The implementation of the rechargeable brain pacemaker device, the first of its kind in Eastern India, therefore, offers a new ray of hope for patients suffering from intractable Parkinson’s disease. Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata, is at the forefront of delivering the latest in medical care. True to its tradition of ensuring the best in curative solutions, on 14th January this year, a team at AGH’s Advanced Movement Disorder Clinic, under the able leadership of Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr Anirban Deep Banerjee, carried out a successful rechargeable bilateral sub-thalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (brain pacemaker) surgery on a 55 year old single mother of three. The patient, was suffering from intractable Parkinson’s disease for many years. She was afflicted by severe rigidity (whole-body stiffness) and bradykinesia (slowness of movements), and, as a result of escalating medication, had started showing symptoms of Dyskinesia (involuntary muscle movements). Advanced Parkinson’s had severely restricted her mobility, leaving her disabled and mostly bed-bound. The eight-hour long awake neurosurgery, implanting the constant-current based rechargeable brain pacemaker system, led to an almost overnight improvement in her symptoms. Her implant was then programmed and checked for best parameters, leading to a significant reduction in her medications and its side-effects. She has regained significant mobility, and is carrying out daily activities on her own. Her quality of life has improved significantly and her family is happy. Dr Banerjee, an alumnus of Cleveland Clinic, USA and eastern India’s first fellowship-trained Functional Neurosurgeon, who has conducted several successful brain pacemaker and ITB (Intrathecal Baclofen) system implantation surgeries at AGH, observed, “With the facility of recharging the device just like our cell-phones, this unique, rechargeable brain pacemaker system has the longest lifespan, and the smallest and lightest profile among its counterparts. The model significantly reduces the need for frequent and costly replacements, inherent to non-rechargeable models. Following its FDA approval in June 2015, this is Eastern India’s first such implant.” Dr Rupali Basu, President and CEO, Eastern Region, Apollo Hospitals Group, India, summed up the success story, “The implementation of the rechargeable brain pacemaker device, the first of its kind in the eastern India, therefore, offers a new ray of hope for patients suffering from intractable Parkinson’s. The implant not only helps in controlling the level of medications required by such patients, but, more importantly, improves their overall quality of life. We would continue delivering such cutting edge innovations in our efforts to touch, and transform lives.”
