Ms. Sangita Reddy, Joint Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals participated in the ‘Digital Transformation...
Tech giant Microsoft, along with Express Healthcare, organised a round table with select healthcare CEOs on the ‘Digital Transformation in Healthcare. The conference with healthcare CEOs brought out some concrete submissions on how technology will play a critical role in enabling healthcare. The prime focus of the select meeting was on how digitisation could help deliver superior services amid growing patient demand for better experience.
The two-hour-long discussion was chaired by Jean-Philippe Courtois (JPC), Executive Vice President and President, Microsoft Global Sales, Marketing and Operations, who gave a broad overview of Microsoft’s mission to make healthcare more accessible and affordable for people across the region, using technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Cortana.
Initiating the discussion, moderator of the roundtable session, Dr Rana Mehta, Leader-Healthcare, PwC India commented that the digital revolution is actually expected to happen across the continuum of care and asked how the private sector viewed this trend as the digital revolution sets in.
Briefing about private sector’s view on digital revolution in healthcare space, Ms. Sangita Reddy, Joint MD, Apollo Hospitals, said, “In India, one needs to look at multiple factors like scaling, innovation, access, financing and efficiency. A combination of all these factors are driven by IT at different levels. They cannot replace hospitals but will definitely have an influence.” Further drawing an analogy between healthcare and the telecom space, Ms. Sangita Reddy informed that the infrastructure facilities put up and the investment made by the telecom sector are seeing benefits by big players like Google and Amazon. The value realisation out of the original infrastructure is getting realised. Similarly, pharmaceutical companies and hospital providers must seriously look at how they can connect the ‘Uberisation and WhatAppisation’ of healthcare, alluding to the increasing number of apps in the healthcare space.
Ms. Sangita Reddy also said, “There is immense data available but the country needs data aggregation and integration. It needs the vision to integrate and put everything together. A tech giant like Microsoft can lead and tell us how it can be done. An integrated mission with a group of like-minded people and a consortium can bring in transformation.”

Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata has announced the introduction of Left Atrial Appendage Closure Device
The minute Cardiac plug comes as a boon for patients of atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat), who would otherwise have to depend on a regime of blood-thinning medications which come associated with a heightened probability of internal bleeding or major surgery. Dr Raja Nag, Cardiologist, Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata, and his team recently undertook a successful implantation of the device on a recipient from Bangladesh.
Mr Sushil Kumar Dey, the 64 year old recipient from Bangladesh, had presented with complaints of atrial fibrillation about six months ago. A diabetic with complaints of hypertension and obesity, he was advised a course of anti-coagulants (blood-thinners) as a preventive measure against stroke, as a complaint of atrial fibrillation heightened a risk of clot formation, enhancing the probability of a stroke.
However, after a couple of months, he had fresh blood in his stool, indicating internal bleeding. As a result, the anti-coagulant medications had to be stopped. This cessation of medications however, did not signal an end to his problems, and he suffered a stroke about a month ago. The only option available, therefore, was to undergo the implantation of a management device in the left atrial appendage, i.e., the area of the heart from where the clots arise.
The team, under Dr Nag, decided to undertake the implantation of the cardiac plug, and the procedure was undertaken in the Hospital’s Digital Catheterization Laboratory on January 06, 2017. The operation, which took less than half an hour, involved the deployment of the device by a catheter inserted through the groin, a process similar to that of an angioplasty. The patient is healthy and is doing well post-deployment of the device. Dr Nag said, “We are happy at the outcomes, and are confident of the continued health and wellbeing of the recipient. This new device represents a key advancement in a cardiologist’s armamentarium, and holds out new hope for all patients of atrial fibrillation, including the old and the infirm, who, for a multitude of reasons, may not be amenable to traditional medications or surgical intervention.”
Professor (Dr) Rabin Chakraborty, Regional Director and Head, Apollo Gleneagles Heart Institutes, Kolkata, noted, “Our team, led by experienced cardiologists with exposure to some of the best facilities in the world, is well equipped to handle all heart-related emergencies and complex coronary interventions round-the-clock. With three world-class cardiac catheterization labs, electrophysiology and ICD-implantation capabilities, heart-rhythm management facilities, device therapy setup, and state-of-the-art technologies like OCT and IVUS – our team delivers a care regimen that is comparable with the leading global institutions for cardiac care. A strict adherence to international guidelines and standards has helped us deliver better outcomes for our patients – a significant step that has received acknowledgement from the American College of Cardiology, which has recognized us as the first International Centre of Excellence in India.”
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Rupali Basu, President and CEO ER, Apollo Hospitals Group, India, observed, “Cardiovascular ailments account for about one in every four deaths in India. In recent years, the scenario has deteriorated to a point where we are faced with a near epidemic of cardiac complaints – complaints that pose a significant challenge to the overall health and wellbeing of the nation. As the leaders of state-of-the-art healthcare in the region, we are happy at this innovative step undertaken by our team of cardiologists, and are confident of introducing more such advancements that help transform the cardiac care paradigm over the coming days. We will continue to enhance and expand our bouquet of services, and lead from the front in the introduction of life-saving innovations that have a major impact on the life and wellbeing of our patients.”

Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata, has inaugurated a Dedicated State-of-the-Art Neonatal Retrieval Services...
Neonates, or infants younger than four weeks, require specialized care to help them cope with the different health challenges that can pose a serious threat to their life and continued wellbeing. In case of medical emergencies, the need for proper retrieval therefore becomes important, especially since the neonates are prone to develop conditions like hypothermia (low body temperature), shortness of breath, and a sudden deterioration requiring urgent resuscitation and ventilation support. A poorly coordinated and unstructured transport may even result in a situation wherein the duration of hospital stay goes up, and the risk of long term disabilities and even death rises significantly.
The Neonatal Retrieval team at Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata, has been organized to address these challenges. Comprising of experienced Neonatologists, Paediatricians and other trained support personnel, the team is equipped with state-of-the-art portable ventilators, syringe pumps, incubators, saturation and ECG monitors, oxygen and air cylinders, and ambulances with adequate battery backup (for long journeys), enabling them to deliver a safe and secure transport service.
Speaking on the occasion on the launch, Dr Rupali Basu, President and CEO ER, Apollo Hospitals Group, India, observed, “New born babies require constant attention to ensure their continued health and wellbeing. With a mortality rate as high as 27 per 1000 live births in the country, we must ensure that our retrieval services are at par with the best institutions in the world, so that the future generations grow up strong and healthy. The Neonatal Retrieval Unit at Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata, is a humble effort in this direction, and promises to transform the paediatric care paradigm of the region.”

Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata, inaugurated the First Comprehensive Respiratory Intensive Therapy Unit ...
The 10-bedded facility, which operates round-the-clock, is equipped with world-class infrastructure including ECMO, an experienced team of pulmonologists and specially trained respiratory ITU personnel, to help address all acute respiratory ailments and complications. ECMO, or Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation is an advanced device that ensures proper oxygenation of the blood in the case of a respiratory failure, by circulating it through an artificial lung. It acts as an extension of the heart-lung machine, providing bypass support to help the patient overcome respiratory distress.
Lung diseases account for about 11% of all deaths in India, making it the second most common cause for morbidity in the country. What makes this an even greater source of concern is that acute respiratory infections, the leading cause for lung-related mortality, have registered an alarming 30% growth between 2010 and 2015. A comprehensive facility, capable of handling all respiratory emergencies, which can pose a major threat to the life and wellbeing of the patient, is therefore the need of the hour.
A Senior Pulmonologist at Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata, said, “Our Respiratory ITU is capable of treating patients with Acute Type 1 and Type 2 respiratory failures due to diseases like severe pneumonia, a severe exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Asthma, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome and others. With dedicated isolation facilities for those in need of barrier nursing, and ECMO for addressing instances of advanced respiratory failure, we are prepared to address all major respirational challenges, which are registering a significant growth due to pollution and seasonal variations.”
Dr Rupali Basu, President and CEO Eastern Region, Apollo Hospitals Group, India, observed, “Quality, innovation, and patient safety are the cornerstones of the services provided at Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata. The inauguration of the first dedicated comprehensive Respiratory ITU in the region is a reaffirmation of our continued dedication to these ideals, and bears testimony of an unshakeable commitment towards transforming the entire healthcare landscape of the region. We will continue to strengthen our multi-disciplinary capabilities, and look to play a key role in the battle against lung ailments and emergencies.”

Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata strengthens its Bone Marrow Transplant Unit to deliver new hope for patie...
Strengthening its ‘Precision Oncology’ focus, Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkatas, which pioneered the concept of comprehensive cancer care in the region, has expanded the ambit of its state-of-the-art Bone Marrow Transplant Unit.
Bone Marrow Transplant is a critical process which involves the replacement of damaged or destroyed bone marrow (soft fatty tissues inside the bones that produce the different kinds of blood cells) by healthy bone marrow stem cells. While the traditional method required a matched donor (a sibling), the team at Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata is now undertaking haploidentical (either parent can be a donor) and even unrelated donor transplants. This latest advancement, available in only a handful of institutes across the country, helps ensure that all those in need of a transplant now, have a better chance of finding a stem cell donor. Supported by world-class facilities including NAT-tested (nucleic acid tested) blood products, post-transplant drug level and infection monitoring, and round-the-clock multi-disciplinary care, patients can now therefore look forward to better and improved outcomes.
Dr Anupam Chakrapani, Haematologist and Haemato-Oncologist, said, “Given the cost and complexities, Bone Marrow Transplants were traditionally reserved for malignant conditions like Lymphoma, Leukaemia, Multiple Myeloma and some Germ Cell Tumours. However, latest advancements in the domain have also allowed us to extend the benefits of this advanced procedure to combat the menace of non-malignant, but none the less critical, conditions like Thalassemia and Aplastic Anaemia. Comprehensive peritransplant care facilities and a focused approach have helped improve results, even in the area of haplo- and unrelated donor transplants.”
Dr Rupali Basu, President and CEO Eastern Region, Apollo Hospitals Group, India, observed, “Last year, about 1600 bone marrow transplants were undertaken across the nation. A very small fraction of these procedures were undertaken in the eastern part of the country, inspiring us to strive towards elimination of this lacuna. Our team, supported by the latest infrastructure and best-in-class facilities, including the only NABH-certified Blood Bank in Eastern India, is therefore transforming the treatment paradigm, and consolidating our motto of ‘Touching Lives’. We will continue to build on our services, so that patients of the region can look forward to all treatment options at the convenience of the doorstep.”
