5 Cardiac Prostheses, 1 Extraordinary Outcome: Apollo Chennai Successfully Treats Septuagenarian with a Comple...
In a remarkable demonstration of clinical excellence and advanced cardiovascular care, interventional cardiology specialists at Apollo Hospitals, Greams Road, Chennai, successfully treated a 73-year-old patient with an exceptionally complex cardiac history. The patient, who had previously undergone multiple heart valve interventions, was admitted after collapsing due to severe cardiac rhythm disturbances and an extremely slow heart rate. Following a comprehensive evaluation, the multidisciplinary team, led by Dr. Refai Showkathali, Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, diagnosed the patient with Tachy-Brady Syndrome, a condition characterized by alternating episodes of abnormally fast and slow heart rhythms. To restore stable cardiac function, the team implanted a leadless Micra pacemaker, an innovative device designed to regulate heart rhythm while minimizing procedural complexity. What makes this case particularly noteworthy is that the patient now lives with five functioning cardiac prostheses, a rare achievement in contemporary cardiac care. Notably, four of these life-saving cardiac interventions were performed at Apollo Hospitals, reflecting the institution’s long-standing expertise in managing highly challenging cardiovascular conditions. This successful outcome highlights the importance of personalized treatment planning, cutting-edge medical technology, and collaborative specialist care. It also underscores how continuous innovation in interventional cardiology is enabling patients with increasingly complex heart conditions to achieve better clinical outcomes and improved quality of life.

Tamil Nadu Achieves a Cardiac Care Milestone with First Pulsed Field Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation
Tamil Nadu has marked a significant advancement in cardiac electrophysiology with the successful completion of the state’s first Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) procedure for the treatment of Atrial Fibrillation (AF) at Apollo Hospitals, Greams Road, Chennai. The procedure was performed by Dr. Karthigesan AM, Senior Consultant Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist, on a 73-year-old patient with a complex heart rhythm disorder, helping restore normal heart rhythm and significantly improving her symptoms and quality of life. Building on this success, a second case followed soon after involving a 47-year-old patient with drug-refractory Atrial Fibrillation who had previously undergone mitral valve repair. The use of PFA in this complex clinical scenario further demonstrated the versatility and potential of this next-generation technology in managing challenging arrhythmia cases. Atrial Fibrillation is one of the most common cardiac arrhythmias and is associated with an increased risk of stroke, heart failure, and reduced quality of life. Pulsed Field Ablation represents a new generation of catheter-based treatment that uses precisely controlled electrical pulses to selectively target abnormal cardiac tissue responsible for the arrhythmia while preserving surrounding structures. This tissue-selective approach offers enhanced procedural precision, a favourable safety profile, and the potential for faster recovery compared to conventional ablation techniques. The successful introduction of PFA in Tamil Nadu reflects Apollo Hospitals’ ongoing commitment to bringing globally recognized cardiac innovations closer to patients. By combining advanced technology with specialized clinical expertise, Apollo continues to expand access to evidence-based treatments that improve patient outcomes and elevate standards of cardiovascular care across the region. This milestone reinforces the promise of innovation-driven, patient-centred care in shaping the future of heart rhythm management.

Apollo Hospitals Madurai Performs Scar-Free Procedure for Benign Breast Tumour
Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Madurai, has successfully performed a scarless Vacuum-Assisted Breast Biopsy (VABB) procedure to remove a benign breast tumor in a 20-year-old woman from Tenkasi, highlighting the growing role of minimally invasive interventions in breast care. The procedure was successfully performed by Dr. KB Santhosh Babu, Consultant – Interventional Radiology and his multidisciplinary team. The patient had experienced mild pain and swelling in her left breast for four months. Following an ultrasound examination, she was diagnosed with fibroadenoma, a common benign breast tumour, and referred to Apollo Hospitals for advanced management. To avoid conventional surgery and achieve a superior cosmetic outcome, Dr. KB Santhosh Babu recommended a VABB procedure. Performed under ultrasound guidance and local anesthesia, the image-guided procedure enabled precise localisation and complete removal of the breast lump through a tiny skin incision. The intervention was completed successfully without any intraoperative or post-procedural complications, allowing the patient to benefit from a scar-free treatment experience. VABB is an advanced, minimally invasive technique designed for the removal of selected benign breast lesions. Compared to traditional open surgery, it offers several advantages, including minimal scarring, preserving breast aesthetics, reduced pain, shorter recovery time, faster return to daily activities, and excellent cosmetic outcomes. This successful case highlights Apollo Hospitals’ commitment to combining clinical expertise with innovative, evidence-based technologies that enhance patient comfort, improve outcomes, and support personalised breast care for women.
