About Dr Arunoday
Dr Arunoday is a UK-trained Senior Consultant Neonatologist at Apollo Hospitals, Gurugram, with more than 25 years of clinical experience, including over 16 years across paediatrics and neonatology in the United Kingdom and a substantive Consultant Neonatologist appointment in a regional Level 3 NHS Neonatal Intensive Care Unit from 2019 to 2025.
His core practice is comprehensive neonatal intensive care across the full spectrum of newborn illness – from extreme prematurity and periviability, including infants around 22–23 weeks’ gestation, through to critically ill term/post-term newborns. He has extensive experience in delivery-room resuscitation and stabilisation, invasive and non-invasive ventilation, volume-targeted ventilation, high-frequency oscillatory ventilation and inhaled nitric oxide; management of neonatal respiratory failure, chronic lung disease, sepsis, necrotising enterocolitis, PDA, PPHN, cardiovascular instability and complex multisystem illness; and management of hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy with therapeutic hypothermia, neurological monitoring and bedside cranial ultrasonography. His consultant practice has also included high-acuity neonatal procedures, tertiary referral and transport liaison, follow-up care, and detailed family counselling in periviability, uncertain prognosis and end-of-life decision-making. His practical clinical and procedural expertise includes neonatal resuscitation and stabilisation, neonatal intubation and advanced ventilation, umbilical arterial and venous catheterisation, longline/PICC access, chest drain insertion, lumbar puncture, therapeutic hypothermia for HIE, bedside cranial ultrasonography, and targeted neonatal echocardiography with haemodynamic assessment.
A major strength of his work is neonatal service development. He designed and led the introduction of an evidence-based Optimal Cord Management / deferred cord-clamping programme, taking it from evidence appraisal and guideline/workflow development to practical implementation in theatres and delivery rooms, multidisciplinary education across neonatal, obstetric, midwifery, anaesthetic and theatre teams, and audit with neonatal nursing leadership to support sustained practice change. He has also led and contributed to quality-improvement work in neonatal murmur/heart-screening pathways, vascular access and ultrasound-guided UVC position/adjustment, TPN monitoring, PDA practice, early-onset sepsis and delivery-room care, alongside regular participation in neonatal governance, mortality review and patient-safety processes. His consultant practice also includes broad Clinical Governance, Quality & Patient Safety leadership, with experience in perinatal mortality and morbidity review, incident review and root-cause analysis, clinical audit and re-audit, evidence-based guideline development and implementation, risk management, documentation and consent, family communication and shared decision-making, education and supervision, workforce/rota management, and the use of clinical data and digital systems to support safer care and continuous improvement.
Dr Arunoday has a special interest in neonatal haemodynamics and targeted neonatal echocardiography (TNE), developed within his wider role as an all-round Level 3 neonatal intensive-care consultant. In the UK he acted as lead neonatal consultant for neonatal cardiology and haemodynamics, performing bedside cardiovascular assessment and TNE for PDA, PPHN, ventricular function and haemodynamic compromise. He established a secure real-time echo-review pathway with paediatric cardiologists at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and led implementation of ViewPoint digital image storage to strengthen governance, audit, teaching and longitudinal review.
Education and team development are integral to his practice. He holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Workplace-Based Postgraduate Medical Education, has served as a named Educational and Clinical Supervisor and as College Tutor, and has taught medical students, neonatal trainees, junior doctors, advanced neonatal nurse practitioners, nurses and midwives. As a former Resuscitation Council UK Newborn Life Support Instructor/faculty member, he delivered lectures, skills stations, simulation scenarios, structured debriefing and multidisciplinary newborn-resuscitation training.
His academic work includes three peer-reviewed neonatal publications covering longline position, ultrasound-guided umbilical central-line adjustment and UK practice in early medical closure of patent ductus arteriosus, as well as conference work in chronic neonatal lung disease and periviability. He has participated in neonatal research under Good Clinical Practice principles and has contributed nationally as a consultant member of the NHS England / NHS Improvement NIPE Heart Screening Pathway Task and Finish Group. He received Trust-level Clinical Excellence Awards in 2022, 2023 and 2024. His earlier Indian tertiary experience includes AIIMS New Delhi and Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals.
