India’s Most Comprehensive Heart and Lung Transplant Program Gives Critically Ill Patients a Second Chance at Life

Over 600 heart and lung transplants and 1,000 ECMO cases mark a major national milestone in advanced critical careConsistent, high-survival outcomes position Apollo Hospitals, Chennai as India’s leader in advanced heart and lung failure management  Chennai, 22 January 2026: Apollo Hospitals, Chennai continues to set national benchmarks in the treatment of advanced heart and lung disease, driven by one of India’s most comprehensive heart, lung, and ECMO-supported transplant programs. The transplant team, with significant national and international experience, have performed 600+ heart and lung transplants, managed over 2,000 transplant patients, 1,000+ Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) cases, along with 250+ Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVAD) procedures and 250+ Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH) interventions. The multidisciplinary heart-lung transplant and MCS program at Apollo expertly manages patients with end-stage heart and or lung failure, offering personalised solutions for those who no longer respond to maximal medical therapy. Be it a stabilising, bridging or definitive treatment with transplanting   hearts and lungs, or implanting durable mechanical cardiac pumps for failing hearts, our patients are supported through a continuum of focused and evidence-based care. The team also offers comprehensive solutions for even the most complex cardiopulmonary conditions, such as the gold standard treatment of Pulmonary Endarterectomy (PEA) for appropriate patients with CTEPH, where the chronic blood clots in the lung arteries are removed surgically. The press conference held to mark this milestone featured patients from different age groups and levels of illness severity, who shared how their lives were transformed by the program. Among them were Mr. Raja Sivagurunathan (59), who survived a critical phase on ECMO support for 48 days before undergoing an emergency double-lung transplant; Mr. B. Saravanan (45), who developed sudden and severe lung failure and was supported on life-saving machines for two weeks until a successful lung transplant; and Mr. Radhae Shyam Raghuvanshi (72), whose condition worsened abruptly and who was airlifted to Chennai before receiving a double-lung transplant after advanced support.   Commenting about ECMO and Transplantation, Dr. Srinivas Rajagopala, Senior Consultant & Clinical Lead - Pulmonology, Sleep Medicine and Lung Transplant, Apollo Hospitals Chennai said, “These outcomes demonstrate how early and appropriate use of ECMO can fundamentally alter the course of severe lung failure. It provides a vital bridge allowing time for stabilisation, informed decision-making, and preparation for lung transplantation. Success lies in constant vigilance, multidisciplinary teamwork, and highly personalized care. Our goal is always meaningful recovery, not merely short-term survival.” Dr. R Ravi Kumar, the Clinical Lead for Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiology, Apollo Hospitals Chennai, described how Apollo Hospitals was achieving superior outcomes for the sickest patients with end-stage heart failure. “The team at Apollo Hospitals, with its evolving national program, is already delivering a unique clinical service that is succeeding in reducing both time to transplant and mortality on the waitlist.  We hope to repeat this at other Apollo Hospitals facilities beyond Chennai and Bangalore”. Dr. Kumud Kumar Dhital, Head of Heart and Lung Transplantation at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, emphasized “Patients suffering from advancing heart and lung failure, with escalating medical therapy and declining quality of life, deserve to be informed of the transplant options at a far earlier stage.  Outcomes improve significantly when patients are referred early and managed with strong, protocol-driven hospital care. Age itself is not a limitation - what matters is careful evaluation, optimization, meticulous surgery, expert after-care in the ICU, and life-long post-discharge continuity of care so as to maximize chances of long-term survivorship.” Dr. IIankumaran Kaliamoorthy, CEO – Chennai Region, Apollo Hospitals also participated in the press conference. As India’s burden of advanced heart and lung disease continues to rise, Apollo Hospitals remains at the forefront of comprehensive cardiothoracic transplantation, combining innovation, expertise, and compassionate care- proving that even the most critical organ failure can be transformed into a second chance at life. Apollo Hospitals delivers 360-degree care through an integrated, multidisciplinary model involving cardiology, pulmonology, cardiothoracic surgery, anaesthesia, critical care, transplant coordination, rehabilitation, and seamlessly coordinates this with post-discharge and long-term follow-up. The program’s focus extends beyond survival to restoring functional independence and quality of life for patients while fully informing and supporting their families. ECMO serves as a vital life-support technology within this ecosystem. This mechanical support temporarily takes over the function of the heart and/or lungs when conventional therapies fail. By oxygenating blood outside the body, ECMO allows failing organs to rest and recover or acts as a crucial bridge to recovery or transplantation. The program integrates VV-ECMO for lung support, VA-ECMO for cardiac and combined heart-lung failure. LVADs in the form of implantable and mechanical heart pumps are offered to suitable candidates as durable alternatives or bridge to heart transplantation.

Apollo Foundation and Billion Hearts Beating Expand Smart Ambulance Emergency Care

Apollo Foundation, in collaboration with the Billion Hearts Beating Foundation (BHB), has strengthened pre-hospital emergency care with the deployment of seven Smart Ambulances across Bengaluru, New Delhi and Navi Mumbai. Operated by Apollo Hospitals and supported by Marsh McLennan as part of its CSR initiative, the programme marks a significant step towards delivering timely, technology-enabled critical care at the community level.  Designed as mobile intensive care units, the Smart Ambulances bring advanced, connected emergency care closer to patients, ensuring that treatment begins the moment help arrives — not when hospital doors open. Each ambulance is equipped with advanced life-support systems including cardiac monitors, ventilators and defibrillators, along with digital clinical tools that support faster, more accurate decision-making during transit.  A key feature of the Smart Ambulance programme is real-time audio-visual connectivity, enabling Apollo Hospitals’ doctors to be virtually present inside the ambulance. This allows physicians to guide trained paramedics as care is initiated en route, ensuring seamless coordination with hospital emergency teams. Live GPS tracking further keeps hospitals and families informed, allowing emergency departments to prepare in advance for incoming patients and ensuring continuity of care from first response to definitive treatment. These state-of-the-art ambulances were formally unveiled in the presence of leadership from Apollo Foundation, Apollo Hospitals, Billion Hearts Beating Foundation and Marsh McLennan, reinforcing the need to strengthen emergency response capabilities in rapidly growing urban regions. Gautam Gambhir, one of India’s top cricketers, launched ‘Gift A Life’ initiative at Delhi. The initiative along with its website is supported by the Apollo Transplant Institutes, to encourage people to take a pledge for donating organs to save countless lives in the process. The mission of ‘Gift A Life’ is to ensure that no person in India dies for want of an organ. This public awareness initiative aims to bring together information and awareness on the issue of organ donation. The website endeavors to start and then sustain a movement on organ donation and awareness. Dr. Anupam Sibal, Group Medical Director and Senior Pediatric Gastroenterologist, Apollo Hospitals, Delhi, said, “We desperately need to create awareness about organ donation while in Spain 33 per million population organ donations take place, in India the rate is 0.1 per million population. It is now more than 15 years since the law declaring brain death came into effect in India, yet there is limited awareness that one individual can gift lives to atleast 8 patients with organ failure. As a clinician it really pains to lose a child for want of an organ.” Taking the pledge, Gautam Gambhir said, “Thousands die every year for want of organs and I feel through initiatives like ‘Gift a Life’ we can do society good by bridging the gap. I appeal to the media to create awareness about organ donation. I would like to urge everyone to make this decision to donate their organs.” Leading specialists from Apollo Hospitals were present at the Press Conference held for the launch, showcasing their support towards the initiative. Shortage of donors and organs has impeded the necessary thrust required to save more lives. More than one lakh people need replacement treatment for their ailments and living donors suffice only a fraction of the demand. ‘Gift A Life’ would like to encourage everyone to pledge to donate their organs simply by signing up on the website – www.giftalife.org.

Apollo Hospitals to launch 100 Sugar Clinics in the next 90 days !
Making diabetes management effective – the principle aim of the integrated diabetes management program of the hospital. Aimed at combating the menace of diabetes in India, Apollo group of hospitals will launch 100 Sugar Clinics around the country in 90 days. These clinics will manage the life cycle of a diabetic and work towards minimizing the associated morbidity and mortality. These clinics working on a specifically developed clinical pathway will offer standardized care to the diabetic patients. India is grappling with lifestyle diseases such as hypertension, stroke, obesity and diabetes. But the problem is not just that, it is also estimated that over the next decade lifestyle diseases will grow at the faster rate than infectious diseases in the country. Diabetes in India is no longer considered an epidemic; it has crossed that level and now has become an exorbitantly growing large public health problem. With sedentary lifestyle, the prevalence of diabetes in India has reached the point of 3.7% of the total population. In the 1970s, only 2.1% of the total Indian population living in urban areas was diabetic. Today that figure touches the mark of 12.1% for adults over the age of 20. The incidence is higher in the south than in the north, particularly in cities such as Chennai and Hyderabad, where about 16% of the population is diabetic. India has been referred as a diabetes capital of the World by the International Journal of Diabetes in Developing Countries as 1.4 million new cases of Diabetes get detected in the country each year. With the sharp increase in the number of diabetic cases in the country, absence of proper facilities to manage this sugar disease is an additional challenge. It is estimated that India spends almost $21 billion on managing diabetes. The cost of managing the complications of this disease is in multiples of the actual cost of treatment of the disease. Diabetes reaches to the stage of complication due to lack of awareness, compliance, proper facilities and knowledge about multi-functional approach. Controlling blood sugar levels, reducing the pharmaceutical requirement for controlling blood sugar levels, close monitoring and early intervention for complications of diabetes are important components of managing diabetes. This needs a holistic approach. In the absence of an integrated diabetes management program in India, Apollo group of Hospitals puts a foot forward in introducing an integrated mechanism that manages diabetes efficiently and prevents the complications of the disease. Sugar Clinics brings together a program that offers a 360 degree approach to managing diabetes. Sugar Clinics offer exclusive facilities catering to all the needs of a diabetic. “Education and wellness management will help reduce the rising incidence of lifestyle diseases. One of these is Diabetes. Keeping in mind the rising burden of Diabetes, India would need an integrated framework that would enable diabetics manage their lifestyle better. This would ensure reduction and prevention of complications, which is a key for these patients.” says Dr Prathap C Reddy, Chairman, Apollo Group of Hospitals. Apollo Sugar Clinic is a complete and integrated solution to manage diabetes and offers customized solutions to different sections of the diabetic population. Upload/Update of Sugar count on SMS/mobile application, personalized web page for each patient, and 24X7 call centres are some of the features of this program. According to Ms. Sangita Reddy, Executive Director – Operations, Apollo Group of Hospitals “We are providing a truly world class diabetes disease management program at the Sugar Clinic by introducing evidence based practice as a formidable tool to decide on treatment strategies in diabetes. We are now embarking on a path to take Sugar Clinics nationwide. We have 13 fully functional facilities having Sugar Clinics and will have 100 of them up and running in the next 90 days.” By introducing the Sugar Clinics in every nook and corner of the country, Apollo group of Hospitals puts forward their concern of providing a better quality of life for diabetes patients across the country.

Apollo Hospitals, Chennai launched the Apollo Institute of Robotic Surgery, bringing in the latest State of the Art “” da Vinci Si Robotic system””, the first of its kind in Tamil Nadu, in association with Vattikutti Foundation, Michigan, USA. This centre of excellence was inaugurated today by renowned award winning urologist, Dr. Mani Menon, Director of Vattikuti Institute of Urology, Henry Ford Hospital, USA. This multi-speciality, multi-modality Institute will offer Robot Assisted Surgeries of world-class standards at costs which would be a fraction of that compared to hospitals across advanced nations for similar services. This new facility will focus on the most advanced form of minimally-invasive robotic surgery that leads to faster recovery, reduces hospital stay, ensures precision and accuracy. The Robotic Surgery is already being done for indications in Urology, Gynaecology, Bariatric Surgery and cardiac surgery for valve replacements and single-double vessel coronary artery bypass grafting. From open surgery to laparoscopy, surgical technique has moved onto the next level of evolution – robotics. The greatest benefit of this cutting edge technique of Controlled Robotics is precision and accuracy that comes from a 3D High Definition Vision, superior magnification and an immersive view of the surgical field through tiny incisions of 1cm to 2 cm. The Endo Wrist Instruments with seven degrees of freedom offer a range of motion far greater than the human hand with reduction of hand tremor making the surgery far more precise with minimal trauma. and eventually allowing for quicker healing. The average blood loss in an open surgery is 400 to 500 ml, whereas in a robotic surgery, it is just 30 to 40 ml. 30% of patients who undergo prostatectomy through an open surgical technique require blood transfusion which is reduced to just 2-3% in patients undergoing the same procedure with Robotic Surgery. This technique, in addition to increased patient comfort and safety allows for reduced hospital stay and in turn reduced chances of infection. In the last decade, Robotic Surgery has fast gained ground as a preferred surgery mode for select indications. Almost 80% of prostate cancer cases in the USA in the last decade have been done by robotics. Present on the occasion Dr. Prathap C Reddy, Chairman, Apollo Hospitals Group said, “”Our collaboration with Vattikuti Foundation, USA is a step towards providing more and more patients in India the benefit of robotic surgery. Considering the numerous benefits that Robotic Surgery offers, we expect a sizeable patient flow benefitting from this facility from the very beginning. This alliance is integral for us as we partner with a healthcare institution that shares our values of maintaining international standards in healthcare delivery.”” The introduction of the Robotic Surgery Program is a significant value offering to all the patients globally and enhances Apollo’s position as a preferred Global healthcare provider. Apollo Hospitals Chennai completes more than 100 epilepsy surgeries with a success rate of 70-100%. Apollo Ins...
Apollo Hospitals has come forward to propagate the fact, once considered a last resort for patients with few other treatment options; surgery is now a relatively safe and common therapeutic strategy for seizure control in epilepsy patients. Epilepsy patients have become seizure free after targeted surgery to remove the epileptic focus with a high degree of success and excellent outcome. They attribute their improvement to better technology and the expert evaluation and operative and postoperative care at Apollo Speciality Hospital Chennai. Epilepsy occurs in 1 among 150 people worldwide out of which 70% respond to drug treatment (3-5 years) where as the remaining 30% require evaluation in a difficult to treat epilepsy clinic by an epileptologist, as about half of them are likely to benefit from epilepsy surgery. Apollo Hospitals Chennai performed its first epilepsy surgery on a Sudanese boy on 15th August 1998. Since then more than 100 surgeries have been completed with a high success rate of more than 70-100% seizure freedom in the operated patients. According to Dr.Prithika Chary, Senior Consultant Neurologist & Neuro Surgeon, Apollo Institute of Neurosciences, “Several options are open to epileptic patients, including proper and detailed evaluation and classification of their seizures, appropriate rational combinations of different antiepileptic drugs, implantation of a device called vagal nerve stimulator or resective surgery to remove the epileptic focus. Identification of such patients should be done as early as possible to give good results. Ideally, any patient whose seizures exceed two per month, in spite of taking two or more antiepileptic drugs, or who has limiting side effects due to medication is a suitable candidate to be examined in a “Difficult to treat epilepsy clinic”. Dr.Chendilnathan, Consultant Neurosurgeon, Apollo Institute of Neurosciences, elaborates, “Surgery as an option of treatment for epilepsy is still an underused option, Apollo has made a huge difference in the lives of a 54 year old from Goa, and a 38 year old from Chennai through surgery and in the life of a 19 year old from Andhra Pradesh with expert drug treatment, among others. With the help of an operating wand (an advanced technology) that adds to the accuracy and safety of the surgery and also the operating microscope, these benefits may open the door for more epilepsy patients to see surgery as a viable option”. The launch of a “Difficult to treat epilepsy clinic” will enable early referral and treatment of patients with persistent seizures, which has potential to irreversibly damage the brain, and offer hope to this select group of patients enabling them to live better.
