  • Heart and Lung Transplant Program Gives Critically Ill Patients a Second Chance at Life
    Press Releases

India’s most Comprehensive Heart and Lung Transplant Program gives critically ill patients a second chance at life

Over 600 heart and lung transplants and 1,000 ECMO cases mark a major national milestone in advanced critical careConsistent, high-survival outcomes position Apollo Hospitals, Chennai as India’s leader in advanced heart and lung failure management  Chennai, 22 January 2026: Apollo Hospitals, Chennai continues to set national benchmarks in the treatment of advanced heart and lung disease, driven by one of India’s most comprehensive heart, lung, and ECMO-supported transplant programs. The transplant team, with significant national and international experience, have performed 600+ heart and lung transplants, managed over 2,000 transplant patients, 1,000+ Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) cases, along with 250+ Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVAD) procedures and 250+ Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH) interventions. The multidisciplinary heart-lung transplant and MCS program at Apollo expertly manages patients with end-stage heart and or lung failure, offering personalised solutions for those who no longer respond to maximal medical therapy. Be it a stabilising, bridging or definitive treatment with transplanting   hearts and lungs, or implanting durable mechanical cardiac pumps for failing hearts, our patients are supported through a continuum of focused and evidence-based care. The team also offers comprehensive solutions for even the most complex cardiopulmonary conditions, such as the gold standard treatment of Pulmonary Endarterectomy (PEA) for appropriate patients with CTEPH, where the chronic blood clots in the lung arteries are removed surgically. The press conference held to mark this milestone featured patients from different age groups and levels of illness severity, who shared how their lives were transformed by the program. Among them were Mr. Raja Sivagurunathan (59), who survived a critical phase on ECMO support for 48 days before undergoing an emergency double-lung transplant; Mr. B. Saravanan (45), who developed sudden and severe lung failure and was supported on life-saving machines for two weeks until a successful lung transplant; and Mr. Radhae Shyam Raghuvanshi (72), whose condition worsened abruptly and who was airlifted to Chennai before receiving a double-lung transplant after advanced support.   Commenting about ECMO and Transplantation, Dr. Srinivas Rajagopala, Senior Consultant & Clinical Lead - Pulmonology, Sleep Medicine and Lung Transplant, Apollo Hospitals Chennai said, “These outcomes demonstrate how early and appropriate use of ECMO can fundamentally alter the course of severe lung failure. It provides a vital bridge allowing time for stabilisation, informed decision-making, and preparation for lung transplantation. Success lies in constant vigilance, multidisciplinary teamwork, and highly personalized care. Our goal is always meaningful recovery, not merely short-term survival.” Dr. R Ravi Kumar, the Clinical Lead for Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiology, Apollo Hospitals Chennai, described how Apollo Hospitals was achieving superior outcomes for the sickest patients with end-stage heart failure. “The team at Apollo Hospitals, with its evolving national program, is already delivering a unique clinical service that is succeeding in reducing both time to transplant and mortality on the waitlist.  We hope to repeat this at other Apollo Hospitals facilities beyond Chennai and Bangalore”. Dr. Kumud Kumar Dhital, Head of Heart and Lung Transplantation at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, emphasized “Patients suffering from advancing heart and lung failure, with escalating medical therapy and declining quality of life, deserve to be informed of the transplant options at a far earlier stage.  Outcomes improve significantly when patients are referred early and managed with strong, protocol-driven hospital care. Age itself is not a limitation - what matters is careful evaluation, optimization, meticulous surgery, expert after-care in the ICU, and life-long post-discharge continuity of care so as to maximize chances of long-term survivorship.” Dr. IIankumaran Kaliamoorthy, CEO – Chennai Region, Apollo Hospitals also participated in the press conference. As India’s burden of advanced heart and lung disease continues to rise, Apollo Hospitals remains at the forefront of comprehensive cardiothoracic transplantation, combining innovation, expertise, and compassionate care- proving that even the most critical organ failure can be transformed into a second chance at life. Apollo Hospitals delivers 360-degree care through an integrated, multidisciplinary model involving cardiology, pulmonology, cardiothoracic surgery, anaesthesia, critical care, transplant coordination, rehabilitation, and seamlessly coordinates this with post-discharge and long-term follow-up. The program’s focus extends beyond survival to restoring functional independence and quality of life for patients while fully informing and supporting their families. ECMO serves as a vital life-support technology within this ecosystem. This mechanical support temporarily takes over the function of the heart and/or lungs when conventional therapies fail. By oxygenating blood outside the body, ECMO allows failing organs to rest and recover or acts as a crucial bridge to recovery or transplantation. The program integrates VV-ECMO for lung support, VA-ECMO for cardiac and combined heart-lung failure. LVADs in the form of implantable and mechanical heart pumps are offered to suitable candidates as durable alternatives or bridge to heart transplantation.

Apollo Foundation and Billion Hearts Beating Expand Smart Ambulance Emergency Care

Apollo Foundation, in collaboration with the Billion Hearts Beating Foundation (BHB), has strengthened pre-hospital emergency care with the deployment of seven Smart Ambulances across Bengaluru, New Delhi and Navi Mumbai. Operated by Apollo Hospitals and supported by Marsh McLennan as part of its CSR initiative, the programme marks a significant step towards delivering timely, technology-enabled critical care at the community level.  Designed as mobile intensive care units, the Smart Ambulances bring advanced, connected emergency care closer to patients, ensuring that treatment begins the moment help arrives — not when hospital doors open. Each ambulance is equipped with advanced life-support systems including cardiac monitors, ventilators and defibrillators, along with digital clinical tools that support faster, more accurate decision-making during transit.  A key feature of the Smart Ambulance programme is real-time audio-visual connectivity, enabling Apollo Hospitals’ doctors to be virtually present inside the ambulance. This allows physicians to guide trained paramedics as care is initiated en route, ensuring seamless coordination with hospital emergency teams. Live GPS tracking further keeps hospitals and families informed, allowing emergency departments to prepare in advance for incoming patients and ensuring continuity of care from first response to definitive treatment. These state-of-the-art ambulances were formally unveiled in the presence of leadership from Apollo Foundation, Apollo Hospitals, Billion Hearts Beating Foundation and Marsh McLennan, reinforcing the need to strengthen emergency response capabilities in rapidly growing urban regions. In Bengaluru, the ambulances have already been deployed at community health camps, benefiting over 23,000 people by bringing advanced medical support closer to underserved populations. The initiative was launched in partnership with Marsh McLennan and inaugurated in the presence of Mr. Sanjay Kedia, CEO, Marsh McLennan & President, Marsh India, reinforcing a shared vision to reimagine emergency care through speed, technology and compassion. Apollo Hospitals marks the historic 20th anniversary of India’s 1st successful Liver Transplant
India has become a global leader in organ transplantation with Apollo Hospitals in the forefront. Mr. Sanjay Kandasamy, now 21, did not have an ordinary childhood. At just 20 months of age, he had a part of his father’s liver transplanted into him in November 1998. In doing so, Sanjay and his doctors created history in the annals of Indian medicine as the country’s first successful liver transplant surgery. Remarkably, not only has Sanjay done exceedingly well, he is now training to be a doctor himself – a testament to the expertise of the treating team and the tenacity of Sanjay and the family. On the 20th anniversary of the era-changing operation that changed the face of medical sciences in India, Indraprastha Apollo hospitals showcased the evolution that liver transplants have gone through over the last two decades as well as felicitated Sanjay Kandasamy and his family for the bravery shown since the surgery. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Preetha Reddy, Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals Group said “Liver disease is a major cause for concern in the country with as many as 2 lakh people dying from it every year. While around 1800 liver transplants are done annually, as many as 20,000 people need a liver transplant at any given point. The fact is around 10 lakh people are diagnosed with liver disease every year, making it the 10th most common cause of death in India as per the World Health Organisation. While India has come a long way since the first operation, there is still a huge gap to be filled. We have endeavoured to create world class transplant centres with leading clinicians running the program. Going forward we will expand our services to hitherto unreached geographies and populations.” Ace Indian cricketer, Gautam Gambhir, a longtime proponent of organ donation was also present on the occasion. “Every three minutes a person gets added to the list of those who need a transplant. Today over 2 lakh Indians are on the list while less than 10% get a transplant. We have to work as a nation to increase our organ donation rate. I have pledged my organs in 2011 and encourage the youth to raise awareness on organ donation and become donors themselves. This needs to become a national movement.” Ashok Bajpai, Managing Director, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, said, “As we mark this historic day, we would like to thank our patients and families who have entrusted us with their faith. Our transplant program is today a beacon of hope for thousands thanks to the expertise and commitment of our specialists and staff. We intend to dedicate the coming years to becoming the best transplant centre in the world.” Marking the occasion, Apollo Hospitals’ Group Medical Director & Senior Pediatric Gastroenterologist, Dr. Anupam Sibal said, “Today marks a special day for Indian medical sciences. It was over 20-years-ago that India finally entered the hallowed exclusive club of countries that carried out liver transplants. This pioneering work and the awe-inspiring attitude of patients like Sanjay has ensured that over the last 20 years the Apollo Institutes of Transplant has performed more than 3200 liver transplants in patients from over 50 countries of which 302 have been children. We endeavor to offer our expertise to patients from all over the world who seek liver transplant services.” By performing 1200 solid organ transplants in 2013, the program is amongst the largest Solid organ transplant program in the world, a position which Apollo has held for 6 consecutive years now. Sanjay Kandasamy said “I would like to thank the doctors at Apollo who gave me a new lease of live 20 years ago. I would not have made it this far without this help. My parents and family have always encouraged me to make the most of this second chance at life. Seeing the work that doctors do from such close quarters made me determined to become a doctor myself. I want to contribute to saving lives of our countrymen and also set an example that any challenge in life can be overcome.” Sanjay was born with a rare condition called Biliary Atresia. This is a disease that affects one in 12,000 babies with the only lasting remedy being a liver transplant surgery. Highlighting the expertise developed at Apollo, Dr. Neerav Goel, Sr. Consultant, Liver Transplants said, “Over the past 20 years our expertise has greatly developed. Today we are doing ABO incompatible and combined liver-kidney transplants. We are also operating on babies as small as 4 kgs. We intend to further develop our program to help an even larger section of the population in the future.” While there is still a lack of infrastructure for life saving organ donations and transplants, the numbers in the country are showing some improvement. Out of 301 hospitals equipped to handle the process, 250 have registered with National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO), showing that in order to conduct an organ transplant, there exists one fully equipped hospital for around 43 lakh people.

Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata simultaneously performed Heart, Liver and a Kidney transplantation, Heart...
The State Government’s drive for deceased donor organ transplants in Bengal has seen positive results with a rise in the collective awareness and a spurt in organ donation and transplant surgeries in Kolkata. Working closely with the Nodal Officer for Organ Donation, Department of Health and the Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (ROTTO), Transplant Surgeons at Apollo Gleneagles Hospital carried out three major organ transplants simultaneously after retrieving the heart, liver and kidneys from a young male donor who had been declared brain-dead on October 25, 2018 at the hospital. The heart, liver and one kidney were transplanted to three recipients at Apollo Gleneagles, while the other kidney was sent to another Hospital through a green corridor facilitated by the Kolkata Police. The corneas were transplanted at Disha Eye Foundation. With the heart, liver and a kidney being transplanted to three patients, the harvesting of the organs and the three transplants being performed simultaneously is a milestone for not only Apollo Gleneagles but for the State and the Region. This is also the maiden Heart retrieval in the city. The donor and recipients were all from Bengal. The transplanted heart gave a second lease of life to a patient with refractory heart failure, while the liver was transplanted to a patient suffering from end-stage liver disease. The kidneys saved the lives of two patients with advanced kidney failure. The Apollo Gleneagles team of doctors led by Dr Mahesh Kr Goenka (Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases), Dr Sushan Mukhopadhyay (Cardiac Surgeon) and Dr Mohan Chand Seal (Renal Transplant Surgeon) worked tirelessly throughout the night to provide the recipients a new lease of life. Mr. Rana Dasgupta, CEO, Apollo Gleneagles Hospital said, “Organ donation and transplants in Bengal have received a major boost from the Government, and the Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (ROTTO) working in tandem with private hospitals. The night of 25th October saw the family of a young boy who was declared brain-dead come forward to donate his organs in a compassionate gesture. Three organ transplants of heart, liver and a kidney led to the morning of 26th October dawning with new life for three patients at Apollo Gleneagles who were suffering from end-stage organ diseases. We are glad for this opportunity to give a second chance at life to the recipients and are happy that the transplants surgeries were uneventful. At the same time, the knowledge that the hope arises from a life that has been lost due to an unfortunate accident is a humbling thought and requires us to be very sensitive in our approach. The first heart transplant at Apollo Gleneagles is an important milestone in our journey to provide the best of medical care in West Bengal. Another highlight was the three transplant surgeries carried out in one night with three clinical teams working simultaneously. We thank the Nodal Officer for Organ Donation, ROTTO officials, police authorities and Forensic Department of NRS Medical College for their support” Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, which has successfully conducted over 1000 solid organ transplants is part of the network of Apollo Transplant Institutes (ATI) and is approved to perform heart, kidney, liver and bone marrow transplants.

Apollo Cradle has launched Advanced Technology Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (eNICU).
In a development that is expected to significantly improve neonatal care capabilities in India, Apollo Cradle, unveiled its ‘Advanced Technology Neonatal Intensive Care Unit’ (eNICU). The Unit will help significantly in monitoring and recording data of each baby bed in real-time. Through eNICU, Apollo Cradle, can now monitor minute details including medication levels, nutrition, feeding pattern, calorie and growth charts of babies in NICU across the country. This will be a one-stop workflow solution to assimilate and disseminate critical neonatal information. The application is designed to procure all the responsibilities of various roles such as nurse, resident doctors, senior doctor, paediatrician and administrator. All essential parameters of a neonates’ progress like growth charts, medication profile and nutrition calculator are provided to reduce manual effort of tracing on paper. eNICU system uses technologies like data analytics and machine learning to study the accumulated historical data and use the same to provide predictive analytics customised for each individual baby. During the launch of eNICU, Dr. Anupam Sibal, Group Medical Director, Apollo Hospitals Group & Senior Consultant Pediatric Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals stated “eNICU will be a great help to Apollo Cradle. It will help doctors and medical officials monitor each baby from a central location. The cloud-based system also manages doctors’ workflow, nursing workflow and resident doctor handover as well as provides the organisation with the benefits of cloud computing, while protecting data and optimising operations.” On the occasion, Mr. Neeraj Garg, CEO, Apollo Health & Lifestyle Ltd. said “Being able to catch a disease at the pre-symptomatic stage is obviously a huge advantage. In a normal NICU, a baby’s weight changes need to be recorded daily and all medication dosages need to be calculated according to current weight. This cannot be done without integration of data that was being done manually. Apart from a significant reduction in the potential for errors, the efficiency and removal of redundancy that this new system brings is obviously very welcome.” Dr. Avneet Kaur, Senior Consultant, Neonatology Department, Apollo Cradle Hospital said “The benefits of the new unit will significantly improve the efficacy of our neonatal services. One major advantage is that retrieval of records becomes easier as everything will now be recorded in digital format. The digitisation also reduces duplication errors as it removes the need for multiple manual data entry.” “There are added benefits for doctors as the new system allows for integration of various neonatal measurement scores, precise medication and nutrition calculations and even act as a clinical decision support mechanism by notifying doctors of upcoming infection in pre- symptomatic stage,” Dr. Kaur added. Dr. Gaurav Jawa, Senior Neonatology and Paediatric Specialist at Apollo Cradle spoke about this Paradigm shift in Neonatal Care. Every decade has seen a major change & evolution of Neonatology since 1980’s. Survival & discharge of extreme preemies (24+ weeks born babies) has improved a lot. A major boost is with the seamless quality of technology available. Ventilation & interventions are slowly taking a back seat & the target is to send home a neurologically intact/ healthy neonate. Digitization will help reduce errors & improve record keeping and assessment.

Ms. Nuha Mohanad Hani, a 19-year-old Iraqi girl got her wings back after a successful surgery performed for Spinal AVM by the doctors at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Delhi. Nuha was suffering from a rare spinal disease known as Spinal AVM in which there is an abnormal tangle of blood vessels in or near the spinal cord. The disease can permanently damage the spinal cord, if not treated properly and on time. Nuha was successfully treated for the disease by Dr P.N. Renjen, Senior Consultant – Neurology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals and his team recently. Explaining about the disease, Dr Renjen said, “Spinal Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) is a rare spinal blood vessel disorder which affects the blood supply in the spinal cord. It can cause a permanent damage to the spinal cord, if not treated in time. The oxygen-rich blood generally enters the spinal cord through arteries which further branches into smaller blood vessels called capillaries. The spinal cord uses oxygen from the blood in capillaries. The oxygen-depleted blood then passes into the veins that drain blood away from the spinal cord to the heart and lungs. However, in spinal AVM, the blood passes directly from the arteries to the veins, bypassing the capillaries. This disorder in blood flow deprives the surrounding cells of vital oxygen causing cells in the spinal tissues to deteriorate or die.” “The arteries and veins in this disease can also rupture, causing bleeding in the spinal cord (hemorrhage). It can remain undiagnosed unless one begins to experience signs and symptoms. The condition can be treated with a surgery to stop or possibly reverse some of the spinal damage caused,” Dr. Renjen further added. Talking about Nuha’s condition, Dr Renjen said, “When Nuha visited our hospital, she was suffering from progressive quadriplegia, paralysis caused by illness or injury resulting into partial or total loss of use of all the four limbs and torso. She was suffering from this condition for over a month. She also had urine and stool incontinence. On re-evaluation of history, we found out that she had an injury few months back followed by quadriplegia and breathing issues. She took treatment for this in her country but did not respond well to it and her condition kept on worsening. When she came here she had only 0/5 power in both of her legs.” “Patient’s repeat MRI C- Spine revealed that she had longitudinally extensive hematomyelia (blood in spinal cord) with central cord lesion (C7-D1). Through her DSA angiography reports, we discovered that she had spinal AVM along C7-D1 as the cause of the hematomyelia. In order to treat her, we performed DSA with Embolisation of spinal AVM along C7-D1. She responded well to the treatment and was discharged within few days after the surgery, said Dr. Renjen. After the surgery, Nuha Mohanad, the patient said, “I am grateful to Dr Renjen and his team at Apollo Hospital because it is due to their expertise and consistent efforts only that I am recovering now. Even the mere thought of that terrible pain, makes me shiver. I was unable to walk and used to be dependent on others even for my daily tasks. Now, I will be able to walk again freely. I cannot thank Dr Renjen enough for giving me this new life.” “The incidence of AVM is estimated at 1 in 1,00,000 and the prevalence is estimated at 18 in 100,000 people. An estimated two-thirds of AVMs occur before the age of 40. Every year, about 4 out of every 100 people with an AVM will experience a hemorrhage and each hemorrhage poses a 15- to 20-percent risk of death or stroke, 30-percent neurological morbidity, and 10-percent mortality. When a hemorrhage occurs, it affects the following regions statistically: intracerebral (41%), subarachnoid (24%), intraventricular location (12%) and various combinations (23%),” further concluded Dr Renjen.
