  • Heart and Lung Transplant Program Gives Critically Ill Patients a Second Chance at Life
    Press Releases

India’s most Comprehensive Heart and Lung Transplant Program gives critically ill patients a second chance at life

Over 600 heart and lung transplants and 1,000 ECMO cases mark a major national milestone in advanced critical careConsistent, high-survival outcomes position Apollo Hospitals, Chennai as India’s leader in advanced heart and lung failure management  Chennai, 22 January 2026: Apollo Hospitals, Chennai continues to set national benchmarks in the treatment of advanced heart and lung disease, driven by one of India’s most comprehensive heart, lung, and ECMO-supported transplant programs. The transplant team, with significant national and international experience, have performed 600+ heart and lung transplants, managed over 2,000 transplant patients, 1,000+ Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) cases, along with 250+ Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVAD) procedures and 250+ Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH) interventions. The multidisciplinary heart-lung transplant and MCS program at Apollo expertly manages patients with end-stage heart and or lung failure, offering personalised solutions for those who no longer respond to maximal medical therapy. Be it a stabilising, bridging or definitive treatment with transplanting   hearts and lungs, or implanting durable mechanical cardiac pumps for failing hearts, our patients are supported through a continuum of focused and evidence-based care. The team also offers comprehensive solutions for even the most complex cardiopulmonary conditions, such as the gold standard treatment of Pulmonary Endarterectomy (PEA) for appropriate patients with CTEPH, where the chronic blood clots in the lung arteries are removed surgically. The press conference held to mark this milestone featured patients from different age groups and levels of illness severity, who shared how their lives were transformed by the program. Among them were Mr. Raja Sivagurunathan (59), who survived a critical phase on ECMO support for 48 days before undergoing an emergency double-lung transplant; Mr. B. Saravanan (45), who developed sudden and severe lung failure and was supported on life-saving machines for two weeks until a successful lung transplant; and Mr. Radhae Shyam Raghuvanshi (72), whose condition worsened abruptly and who was airlifted to Chennai before receiving a double-lung transplant after advanced support.   Commenting about ECMO and Transplantation, Dr. Srinivas Rajagopala, Senior Consultant & Clinical Lead - Pulmonology, Sleep Medicine and Lung Transplant, Apollo Hospitals Chennai said, “These outcomes demonstrate how early and appropriate use of ECMO can fundamentally alter the course of severe lung failure. It provides a vital bridge allowing time for stabilisation, informed decision-making, and preparation for lung transplantation. Success lies in constant vigilance, multidisciplinary teamwork, and highly personalized care. Our goal is always meaningful recovery, not merely short-term survival.” Dr. R Ravi Kumar, the Clinical Lead for Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiology, Apollo Hospitals Chennai, described how Apollo Hospitals was achieving superior outcomes for the sickest patients with end-stage heart failure. “The team at Apollo Hospitals, with its evolving national program, is already delivering a unique clinical service that is succeeding in reducing both time to transplant and mortality on the waitlist.  We hope to repeat this at other Apollo Hospitals facilities beyond Chennai and Bangalore”. Dr. Kumud Kumar Dhital, Head of Heart and Lung Transplantation at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, emphasized “Patients suffering from advancing heart and lung failure, with escalating medical therapy and declining quality of life, deserve to be informed of the transplant options at a far earlier stage.  Outcomes improve significantly when patients are referred early and managed with strong, protocol-driven hospital care. Age itself is not a limitation - what matters is careful evaluation, optimization, meticulous surgery, expert after-care in the ICU, and life-long post-discharge continuity of care so as to maximize chances of long-term survivorship.” Dr. IIankumaran Kaliamoorthy, CEO – Chennai Region, Apollo Hospitals also participated in the press conference. As India’s burden of advanced heart and lung disease continues to rise, Apollo Hospitals remains at the forefront of comprehensive cardiothoracic transplantation, combining innovation, expertise, and compassionate care- proving that even the most critical organ failure can be transformed into a second chance at life. Apollo Hospitals delivers 360-degree care through an integrated, multidisciplinary model involving cardiology, pulmonology, cardiothoracic surgery, anaesthesia, critical care, transplant coordination, rehabilitation, and seamlessly coordinates this with post-discharge and long-term follow-up. The program’s focus extends beyond survival to restoring functional independence and quality of life for patients while fully informing and supporting their families. ECMO serves as a vital life-support technology within this ecosystem. This mechanical support temporarily takes over the function of the heart and/or lungs when conventional therapies fail. By oxygenating blood outside the body, ECMO allows failing organs to rest and recover or acts as a crucial bridge to recovery or transplantation. The program integrates VV-ECMO for lung support, VA-ECMO for cardiac and combined heart-lung failure. LVADs in the form of implantable and mechanical heart pumps are offered to suitable candidates as durable alternatives or bridge to heart transplantation.

Apollo Foundation and Billion Hearts Beating Expand Smart Ambulance Emergency Care

Apollo Foundation, in collaboration with the Billion Hearts Beating Foundation (BHB), has strengthened pre-hospital emergency care with the deployment of seven Smart Ambulances across Bengaluru, New Delhi and Navi Mumbai. Operated by Apollo Hospitals and supported by Marsh McLennan as part of its CSR initiative, the programme marks a significant step towards delivering timely, technology-enabled critical care at the community level.  Designed as mobile intensive care units, the Smart Ambulances bring advanced, connected emergency care closer to patients, ensuring that treatment begins the moment help arrives — not when hospital doors open. Each ambulance is equipped with advanced life-support systems including cardiac monitors, ventilators and defibrillators, along with digital clinical tools that support faster, more accurate decision-making during transit.  A key feature of the Smart Ambulance programme is real-time audio-visual connectivity, enabling Apollo Hospitals’ doctors to be virtually present inside the ambulance. This allows physicians to guide trained paramedics as care is initiated en route, ensuring seamless coordination with hospital emergency teams. Live GPS tracking further keeps hospitals and families informed, allowing emergency departments to prepare in advance for incoming patients and ensuring continuity of care from first response to definitive treatment. These state-of-the-art ambulances were formally unveiled in the presence of leadership from Apollo Foundation, Apollo Hospitals, Billion Hearts Beating Foundation and Marsh McLennan, reinforcing the need to strengthen emergency response capabilities in rapidly growing urban regions. In Bengaluru, the ambulances have already been deployed at community health camps, benefiting over 23,000 people by bringing advanced medical support closer to underserved populations. The initiative was launched in partnership with Marsh McLennan and inaugurated in the presence of Mr. Sanjay Kedia, CEO, Marsh McLennan & President, Marsh India, reinforcing a shared vision to reimagine emergency care through speed, technology and compassion. A 50-year-old Myanmar patient regains her voice after successfully getting operated at Indraprastha Apollo Hos...
A 50-year-old woman, Ms. Oak Moon who came to India as a matching kidney donor from Myanmar (for her relative), got a new ray of hope as she got treated for her previously caused surgical complication in her country. The lady had lost her ability to speak due to bilateral vocal cord palsy after thyroid surgery at Myanmar. She had an artificially inserted tube in her neck called tracheostomy due to which she had discomfort in breathing naturally and inability to speak. In Myanmar, she was told that because of this surgical complication, she could never regain her speech. Few years later, she came to India with a noble intention of donating her kidney to a relative in need. Here at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, while she was being prepared for the transplant procedure, the experts also advised her to undergo surgical intervention so that her neck tube can be removed. Under the supervision of Dr Sandeep Guleria, Senior Consultant Surgeon in General Surgery, GI Surgery and Transplantation, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi and Dr Noor Ul Din Malik, Consultant ENT, Head and Neck Robotic Surgery, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi, Ms. Oak Moon underwent both the surgeries in single stage with an uneventful recovery. Speaking on the same Dr Sandeep Guleria, Senior Consultant Surgeon in General Surgery, GI Surgery and Transplantation, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi said, “The patient, Ms. Oak Moon, came to India with a noble intention of donating her kidney to one of her relatives. Due to the surgical complication in her thyroid surgery in Myanmar, she developed an inability to speak. On preparing her for the transplant, we found that she suffered a discomfort in breathing due to the tracheostomy tube in her neck. Based upon her then condition, we advised her to undergo a laser cordectomy along with the donor nephrectomy (surgery for kidney donation). Laser cordectomy was planned to remove her tracheostomy tube from her neck (Decannulation) and treat her artificial breathing. For further guidance to the patient and performance of laser cordectomy we roped in Dr Noor Ul Din Malik for his expert advice.” Adding further to it, Dr Noor Ul Din Malik, Consultant ENT, Head and Neck Robotic Surgery, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi said, “An otherwise healthy lady, Ms. Oak Moon had undergone a complicated thyroid surgery few years ago in Myanmar where she was tracheostomised with a tube in her neck. With this tube she was unable to speak and breathe naturally. Her breathing was also regulated through an artificial breathing passage. When we examined her at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, we decided that while she would be undergoing the kidney nephrectomy, we shall also perform a laser cordectomy for the purpose of removing the tube from her neck. As, removing the same could get her voice and natural breathing back.” On patient’s recovery Dr Sandeep Guleria, Senior Consultant Surgeon in General Surgery, GI Surgery and Transplantation, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi and Dr Noor Ul Din Malik, Consultant ENT, Head and Neck Surgery, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi said, “As we planned, the patient underwent both the procedures together and was decannulated after 3 weeks of the laser cordectomy procedure. Ms. Oak Moon has been doing great since then, having an uneventful recovery she has been able to talk and breathe naturally. We are happy that we could give a patient the reason to smile and fly back to her home without any pain. “

For the first time in Eastern India, Apollo Multispecialty Hospitals, Kolkata has introduced Power Spiral Ente...
For the first time in Eastern India, the Gastroenterology team led by Dr Mahesh Kumar Goenka at Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals, Kolkata brings Power Spiral Enteroscopy, the latest and safest process to investigate and treat gastrointestinal tract diseases. This motorised type of endoscope would ease the process of endoscopy of small intestine and can be inserted through oral route as well as through rectum. While being safe, it is also a very effective technique for management and detection of small bowel pathology. On this note, Dr Surinder Singh Bhatia, DMS-Eastern Region, Apollo Hospitals Group, said, “Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals, Kolkata, continues to be the leader in bringing in new technologies and performing path-breaking procedures. Our committed clinicians, with the help of this state-of-the-art technology, would help many needing gastro interventions.” The small intestine is a 20 feet long part of gastrointestinal tract which is site of common diseases like Tuberculosis, Crohn’s disease, Drug induced ulcers, Vascular malformation etc. Till 20 years back, it was inaccessible by endoscope. Capsule Endoscopy and Balloon assisted enteroscopy have been developed but they have the disadvantage of difficult and tiring manoeuvrability. In order to make the entire procedure easy for the patients and to aid doctors, Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals, Kolkata, has recently introduced Power Spiral Enteroscopy, a motorised type of endoscope equipped with a special motor. On this Dr Mahesh Kumar Goenka, Director, Institute of Gastrosciences and Liver, Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals, Kolkata said, “This technique of endoscopic evaluation of the small bowel allows inspection of this 20-ft long small intestine with the pressing of a foot paddle just like driving a car with steering, accelerator and a break. It not only aids in treating complex conditions in the small intestine but also improves diagnosis and patient outcomes for chronic and complex intestinal conditions.” The PowerSpiral allows for fast and gentle access to reach deep into the gastrointestinal tract by pleating the small bowel onto the enteroscope using a spiral segment. This is achieved via an integrated motor, which rotates the single-use PowerSpiral cover tube that is equipped with soft spiral-shaped fins that gently follow the mucosa. The enhanced insertion speed, easy advancement, controlled withdrawal- and improved manoeuvrability can substantially reduce the overall procedure time and allow time for effective treatment. The motorized advancement, combined with the soft fins of the spiral segment, enables smooth, safe and deep insertion as well as excellent manoeuvrability, making it possible to see the entire intestinal lumen. All of these combined features make it easier to penetrate deep into the small bowel. The gentle grip on the mucosa between the soft fins of the spiral segment enables precise positioning of the endoscope. The integrated water jet keeps the view clear throughout the process. Thanks to the conventional endoscope channel, PowerSpiral allows for efficient interventions with a broad range of endotherapeutic devices. Due to the improved overall manoeuvrability, lesions may be reached more quickly. The first study results demonstrated that procedure times with the PowerSpiral endoscope may be substantially reduced Power spiral can be used for taking biopsy, removing small tumors, dilating narrowing, removing foreign bodies and stopping bleeding. The entire process is not only complete but also very fast compared to earlier techniques and also safe because of its inherent safety devices. The procedure is done under sedation and is therefore pain free. Benefits of Power Spiral Enteroscopy: Complete inspection of small intestine Rapid Safe Painless Can be used for obtaining biopsy Can treat small intestinal diseases

Apollo Hospitals has announced free COVID-19 vaccinations for children with co-morbidities.
Apollo Hospitals Group has announced free vaccinations against COVID-19 for children with specified co-morbidities across the hospital network. It is anticipated that approval will soon be granted for vaccinating children with specified co-morbidities and immediately post-approval and details of the age-group permitted for vaccination, the free vaccination initiative would be launched by Apollo Hospitals. The list is expected to include children with haematological, neurological, cardiac, liver, gastrointestinal, rheumatic, respiratory, genitourinary, and developmental disorders as well as cancers. However, this is an indicative list and the final list of co-morbidities eligible for free vaccination would be as per the list published by the Government. Dr Prathap C Reddy, Chairman, Apollo Hospitals Group said, “Adults have been the focus of vaccination till now as by and large, children have been spared from severe COVID 19 infection. However, this is not the case in children with co-morbidities. These children continue to be at high risk of developing a severe infection. In addition, children with comorbidities have also seen a significant psychosocial impact as the lockdown resulted in their missing out on the personalized attention and specialized treatment and care that they require. The Government’s approval of vaccinations for children with co-morbidities, when it comes through, will be a welcome step in the right direction. Realising the criticality of this vaccination, we will be extending the COVID vaccines completely free of cost to children with co-morbidities and giving them the necessary ‘Kavach’ (shield) against COVID!” Apollo Hospitals has been at the frontlines of battle against COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic and is today the largest private sector vaccinator in the country with over 5 million vaccine doses administered. The vaccination program for children and adolescents will help to protect the future of the nation from COVID-19. There are two vaccines awaiting EUA by the Government and these are: Covaxin: For ages 2-18 years. Two doses at a gap of 28 days. Administered intra-muscularly ZyCov-D: For ages 12-18 years. Three doses at a gap of 28 days. Needle free vaccine administered intra-dermally. Both vaccines would be available at Apollo Hospitals’ vaccination centers across the country, once all Government approvals are in place and the vaccines are made available.
