Common Types of Scams
Upcoding and Phantom Billing
Upcoding: Healthcare providers bill for a more expensive service than what was actually provided (e.g., billing for an MRI when only a basic X-ray was done). Phantom Billing: Providers charge for services, procedures, or medicines that the patient never actually received.
Recruitment and Fake HR Fraud
Fraudsters pose as representatives of reputable hospitals like Apollo or the AHA to offer fictitious jobs. They often use AI-generated job listings and fake employee profiles to gain trust. Victims are pressured to pay "background verification" or "registration fees" to secure the position.
Organ Transplant and Kidney Scams
Middlemen use forged documents and fake "family trees" to bypass legal requirements that organ transplants only occur between relatives. In some cases, victims are lured with large sums of money to donate an organ, only to have the scammers disappear after taking "processing fees".
Telehealth and Virtual Appointment Fraud
Fraudulent providers bill for video appointments that never actually happened. Scammers may also use stolen patient data to submit false claims for digital health services.
Fake Health Insurance Policies
Unauthorized agents sell counterfeit insurance plans with "guaranteed approval" at unusually low premiums. Victims realize the fraud only when they attempt to file a claim for a medical emergency and find their policy is invalid.
Medical Identity Theft
Scammers steal personal information or insurance card details to file fraudulent claims. This can lead to patients finding incorrect medical histories on their records, which could result in dangerous treatments or denied legitimate claims.

QR Code and Phishing Portals
Fake QR codes are placed on hospital flyers or emails that lead to cloned login portals designed to steal employee or patient credentials. Urgent messages claiming "your policy is expiring" or "immediate payment required" trick users into entering bank details on fraudulent websites.
