Dr. Thomas Joseph Kishen is a highly accomplished and esteemed spine surgeon currently associated with the Apollo Hospitals, Sheshadripuram, Bengaluru, India, as a Consultant in Spine and Scoliosis Surgery.
Dr. Kishen completed his MBBS from Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore University, in 1996; Diploma in Orthopaedics from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal in 1999; and DNB in Orthopedic Surgery from the National Board of Examinations, New Delhi, in 2001. Dr Kishen undertook his speciality training in Spine Surgery at the world-famous Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore (2003-2005) followed by an Advanced Spine Fellowship at St George Clinical School and Hospital, UNSW, Sydney, Australia (2005-2010). He has also been a visiting fellow at Seoul Spine Institute in South Korea (under the legendary Professor Suk) and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, USA (with another legend Dr Lawrence Lenke).
Dr Kishen has been awarded the Dr. Balu Sankaran Gold Medal for standing First in India in the Diplomate of the National Board Exam in Orthopaedics in 2001. He also received the Professor M.V. Daniel Gold Medal for “exemplary commitment to patient care” from the PSG Institute of Medical Sciences in Coimbatore in 2000. Dr Kishen was awarded the Dr. Premananda Nayak Award for being the Best Outgoing D'Ortho Student from MAHE University, Manipal in 1998. His also received the ASSI-Depuy Best Spine Research Award in 2005. Dr. Kishen has contributed numerous chapters to books on Spine Surgery and published numerous papers in peer reviewed national and international journals. Dr Kishen is passionate about surgical training and has been conducting a monthly resident training programme “Bone School” for many years. He also runs the ‘Scoliosis Foundation of India” to help children from disadvantaged backgrounds to access complex scoliosis surgeries.
Dr. Kishen specialises in the surgical and non-surgical treatment of spinal disorders from the neck to the lower back. In addition to performing fusion and disc surgery at all levels in the spine, he has a special interest in spinal tumour surgeries and spinal deformity surgeries (scoliosis and kyphosis). Dr Kishen is known to ethical practices and compassionate care.
