Chest tube insertion, also known as tube thoracostomy, is a procedure where we place a flexible tube into the space between your lungs and chest wall. This tube helps drain accumulated air, blood, or fluid that can compress your lung and make breathing difficult. Think of it as creating a controlled pathway to remove unwanted substances from around your lung, allowing it to re-expand and function properly.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, and while you may feel some pressure during insertion, the relief in breathing difficulties is often immediate. The tube typically stays in place for several days while drainage continues, and we monitor your progress carefully until it can be safely removed.
