63-Year-Old Patient With Just 10% Heart Function undergoes successful Valve Replacement Surgery at Apollo Hosp...
In a remarkable life-saving surgery, Dr Rahul Bhushan & Cardiac Surgery Team at Apollo Hospitals, Lucknow successfully performed a rare, high-risk aortic valve replacement surgery on a 63-year-old man who had been rejected at multiple leading cardiac centres due to extremely poor heart function and severe valve leakage. The patient came to OPD of Dr Rahul Bhushan Consultant - CTVS (Adult & Paediatric) Apollo Hospitals Lucknow with severe breathlessness even at rest. The patient was unable to even lie down flat or perform basic daily activities. His Echocardiography revealed that his heart’s main valve (aortic valve) was leaking badly & his heart muscle was extremely weak. His heart was functioning with an ejection fraction (LVEF) of just 10–15%.Speaking about this extraordinary case, Dr. Rahul Bhushan, Senior Cardiac Surgeon, Apollo Hospitals Lucknow, said, “Considering the critical condition of his heart, several centres had considered him “inoperable” and advised a heart transplant as the only option. Unfortunately, financial constraints and the lack of a timely donor made transplant impossible. With worsening breathlessness and impending multi-organ failure, the patient’s condition was life-threatening.After extensive discussion, the patient and his family requested surgical intervention despite the near-certain risk of perioperative mortality. The cardiac surgery team at Apollo Hospitals, Lucknow took the challenge and decided to perform Aortic Valve Replacement Surgery. The patient underwent successful aortic valve replacement surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass with maximum medical support. Despite the anticipated difficulty, both the operation and the recovery were uneventful. He showed steady improvement and was discharged in stable condition. At follow-up, he was walking independently and expressed deep gratitude for being given “a second chance at life.”“This case illustrates the resilience of the human heart and the potential for recovery even in patients with severely depressed heart function. While surgery in such high-risk cases is rarely attempted, careful patient selection, multidisciplinary teamwork, and the courage to take bold decisions can sometimes achieve what seems impossible.” Adding to this, Dr. Mayank Somani, MD & CEO, Apollo Hospitals Lucknow, congratulated the whole team & said, “This is a shining example of Apollo’s commitment to saving lives, even in the most challenging circumstances. The case highlights not just the skill and expertise of the Apollo team, but also the importance of hope, determination, and advanced healthcare infrastructure in ensuring that “life always finds a way.” Our team continues to push the boundaries of medical care to ensure that people in Lucknow and Uttar Pradesh have access to world-class treatment without having to leave the state.”In a remarkable life-saving surgery, Dr Rahul Bhushan &Cardiac Surgery Team at Apollo Hospitals, Lucknow successfully performed a rare, high-risk aortic valve replacement surgery on a 63-year-old man who had been rejected at multiple leading cardiac centres due to extremely poor heart function and severe valve leakage. The patient came to OPD of Dr Rahul Bhushan Consultant - CTVS (Adult & Paediatric) Apollo Hospitals Lucknow with severe breathlessness even at rest.
