Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Overview

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a type of treatment that involves a person breathing higher concentration of oxygen while in an enclosed space (Treatment Chamber) pressurized at higher than atmospheric pressure. The name is self-explanatory – Hyper meaning “High” and “Baric” meaning Pressure – higher pressure Oxygen treatment.

During this Therapy, due to higher pressure, the oxygen dissolves more in the liquid part of blood (plasma) and its level increases 10-20 times of normal level. This floods the tissues with oxygen, revitalizing their cells and enhancing the body’s natural healing process. This oxygen reaches all areas of the body – including those places also where it was not reaching earlier due to inadequate blood supply or less haemoglobin.

Conditions such as non-healing wounds due to many causes and especially Diabetic foot, radiation situation damage and traumatic brain injuries require adequate oxygen to reach the damaged area and support the body’s natural healing ability so that it can function properly.

This therapy enhances the healing and improves the quality of life of the patient in many well-defined areas. Other Conditions treated with HBOT include serious infections, bubbles of air in your blood vessels, Acute Hearing Loss and Retinal Artery Obstruction .

Apollo Hospital Delhi took the lead by establishing the first hyperbaric treatment centre in the private sector in May 2000 and is the only facility with multispecialty support under one roof to offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy in Delhi.
