What exactly is Minimal Lower Thoracic Spine Spondylosis?

Blog Post 11

Back pain is one of the most prevalent chronic pains affecting individuals as they age. This is often the result of age or regular wear and tear after years of movement, owing to the natural decay of the spinal bones. The thoracic vertebrae are in the centre of the spine, with most vertebral column motions being observed in the Cervical (neck) and Lumbar (lower back) regions.

Spondylosis is a type of arthritis that results from spine deterioration. It occurs when discs and joints are degenerating, when spurs on the vertebrae are growing, or both. These modifications can influence the motion of the spine and influence the nerves and other functions.

Different types of spondylosis develop in different parts of the spine:

  • Thoracic Spondylosis: Affects the middle of the spine
  • Lumbar Spondylosis: Impacts the lower back
  • Multilevel Spondylosis: Affects more than one portion of the spine

What is Thoracic Spondylosis?

Thoracic Spondylosis is almost identical to Spine Arthritis. It develops when degenerative changes that take place in the joints and discs of the vertebrae. Common symptoms may consist of muscle weakness and back stiffness.

What are the symptoms of Thoracic Spondylosis?

As earlier stated, causes of Thoracic Spondylosis can be mainly limited to age and wear and tear. Common symptoms of thoracic Spondylosis include:

  • Trouble walking (ambulating)
  • Stiffness of the mid-back or upper back
  • Weakness of muscles
  • Numbness and tingling in the upper and lower extremities
  • Disco-ordination
  • Pain in the upper back, particularly in the morning

Diagnosing and Treating Thoracic Spondylosis

Usually, it is persistent back pain that prompts people to look for expert help. This is the time when Thoracic Spondylosis will be detected as detailed imaging studies of the spine can be studied. These could include a CT scan, spinal X-ray, or MRI.

Normally, straightforward cases of Thoracic Spondylosis can be successfully managed using traditional treatment or non-surgical alternatives. These Thoracic Spondylosis treatments include:

  • Cortisone injections
  • Traction
  • Prescription nerve pain medication
  • Ultrasound
  • Prescription muscle relaxers
  • Electrical stimulation
  • Bracing
  • Behaviour modification
  • Exercise
  • Prescription narcotic medication
  • Over-the-counter medication for pain or inflammation
  • Heat/ice application
