Posted by Apollo Hospitals | 21 Jul,2019

About the Patient and condition

A 47-year-old male patient from Ethiopia was suffering from progressive breathlessness, palpitation and chest discomfort for past few months.

Case Scenario

Patient underwent medical evaluation in his native country, where an ECG, Chest X-ray and Two-Dimensional Echocardiography showed severe aortic regurgitation and ascending aortic aneurysm.

He came to Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai, for surgical management of his condition. The Chest X-ray here revealed a hugely dilated ascending aorta. Further, 2D echo showed severe aortic regurgitation and ascending aortic aneurysm. Coronary angiography along with LV shoot revealed normal coronaries and severe aortic regurgitation. CT aortogram revealed huge ascending aortic aneurysm of size 7 * 8 cm. The patient underwent Bentall procedure. Post-procedure, the patient was in ICU for three days after which he was shifted to the ward. He was discharged on the 9th day and has now made a full recovery.

Worldwide Scenario

Ascending aortic aneurysms are a subtype of thoracic aortic aneurysms that develop above the diaphragm. Since it weakens the aorta, if it ruptures, it can have life-threatening consequences for the patient. To correct this defect, the specialists performed a Bentall procedure. This is a complex, high-risk surgery that has proved to be a life-saving measure in such cases.

Expertise at Apollo Hospitals

The expert at Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon and his team performed the Bentall procedure on him. Being a highly complex supra major surgery, it lasted for 5 hours. It involved replacement of ascending aorta, aortic root and aortic valve with imported SJM composite prosthetic graft. The coronary arteries were detached and delicately re-implanted on prosthetic neo-aorta, requiring highly skilled surgical expertise.

Apollo Hospitals – Touching Lives

Ascending aortic aneurysm is a serious disease, and rupture of the bulge can be life-threatening. The bulging can be sometimes 1.5 times more than normal size. An open heart surgery takes longer time to recover than Bentall procedure. Post-procedure patient stays in ICU for few days and is continuously monitored. At Apollo Hospitals, the timely diagnosis and expertise of doctors, enables us to treat such cases. Adequate measures are also taken to handle any complications. This provides not just treatment but ensures a good quality of life to the patient.

Patient’s testimonial

Patient was satisfied with the treatment and care provided by Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai and thanked Dr Sanjeev Jadhav, Consultant, CVTS & Heart Transplant Surgeon and his team for performing life-saving procedure.
